OLD BUSINESS
Discussion turned to the Red Wedges (watermelon pieces) that the Commission had been discussing
whether to purchase or not. In regard to the landscape and art fund discussed at last month's
meeting, Manager of Recreation, Gary Hultberg, reported that there is $65,000 in the fund and that
the purchase of the Red Wedges has been added to the list to take to City Council. Hultberg stated
that Community Development does not have money budgeted for the purchase of the artwork so it
will not be able to contribute any funding . Commission members were informed that the purchase
price for both pieces would be $15,000 .
In regard to MOA 's request for the Cultural Al1s Commission to pay for a memorial plaque and
lighting for Olga's sculpture, Duo , Bertoluzzi reported that Public Works has estimated the cost for
lighting to be $1,925 . Be11oluzzi told the Commission that the cost for a sandstone memorial plaque •
would be $1,500 . Commission Member Schnitzer commented in regard to MOA wanting the
Commission to pa y for the memorial plaque and lighting. Bertoluzzi explained that MOA never
asked that the Commission pay for it but rather MOA had spent all of its money and felt that a
plaque and lighting were still needed so he told MOA that he would bring it to the Commission to
see if there was interest. Commission Member Ba11unek asked in regard to prior discussion that
Cynthia Madden-Lietner's husband Roger would be making a plaque . MOA representative Tim
Vacca stated that that was his understanding; adding that he was not sure where the quote of $1,500
came from but that he would think that Roger would be fair with the cost. Discussion followed.
Bertoluzzi requested that Vacca get more information to bring back to the Commission.
Bartunek asked in regard to who had rights to the sculpture and if MOA were to leave , would it take
the sculpture. Vacca stated that the intent of MOA is to not move the sculpture while here and
MOA is committed to being here through 2020. Hultberg told the Commission that EEF gave its
approva l for the Red Wedges to stay where they currently are if purchased by the City.
