Minutes of March 5, 2008
The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to
order at 5:46pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the Civic Center City Council Conference Room .

There were no changes to the agenda .
III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes or corrections to the minutes of January 2,
2008, and February 6, 2008. There were none. The minutes were approved as
presented.
IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS
Bertoluzzi introduced Tatum Hayes , Executive Assistant for the Museum of Outdoor Arts .
V. NEW BUSINESS
Bertoluzzi turned discussion over to Recreation Manager Gary Hultberg to review the Cultural Arts
Commission Annual Report . Hultberg explained that the Cultural Arts Commission has not done
an Annual Report since 2004 so he will be combining reports for 2005 through 2007. Items for the
report were re viewed . It was decided that an electronic version of the items would be sent to
commission members for them to review . The Commission was told that a date would be
scheduled for the Board to meet with City Council once the annual report is finalized .
Commission Member Stewart reported that the Artabout Englewood event has been moved to
September 26 and 27 which will allow Englewood High School and Clayton Elementary to
participate . Discussion followed on particulars for the event including the Chamber of Commerce
being involved . Bartunek commented in regard to discussion last fall regarding cost of the Artist
Reception . Black explained that Community Development and Parks and Recreation share the cost
of the event and last year there was an increase in expenses that Parks and Recreation had not been
made aware of. Black requested that those involved with the event meet to review the budget
before planning starts. Stewart stated that she would pass on the request.
VI. OLD BUSINESS
Discussion began on the purchase of the Red Wedges . Hultberg re viewed with the Commission its
recommendation at last month's meeting to move forward with the purchase of the artwork and the
Commission committing funds from the Public Art Fund for seventy-five percent of the total
purchase cost not to exceed $15 ,000 . Hultberg added that it was the intent of the Commission that
the remaining twenty-five percent would come from the Landscape and Fine Arts Fund. Hultberg
explained to the Commission that during a conversation between Nancy Fenton and the artist,
Christopher Weed, Weed agreed to lower the price of the Red Wedges to $1 l ,2 50 with the hope
that the Commission would make an immediate purchase . Stewart noted that Weed had known
Olga and knew that she loved the Red Wedges. Discussion followed .
A motion was made by Vice Chairperson Moore and seconded by Commission
Member Schnitzer recommending that the Cultural Arts Commission purchase the
Red Wedges for $11,250.
Stewart suggested that the Commission have a plaque made for the Red Wedges since the current
plaque belongs with the Art at the Shuttle Stops collection. Stewart noted that the new plaque
would also give the Commission the opportunity to recognize Christopher Weed for his generosity .

Commission members were informed that Roger Leitner is working on the plaque for Duo . Ha yes
distributed wording for the plaque . Discussio n followed. Hayes was asked if Jim Doty, Olga 's
husband , has seen the wording . Ha yes replied that she did not know but would make sure he did .
Bertoluzzi recogni ze d Cynthia Madden-Leitner for her generosity with Duo and the plaque ; noting
that Cynthia thinks of Olga with the greatest admiration . Commission members discussed sending
a note of thanks to Roger for his work on the plaque .
VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS
Discussion tuned to a report on Public Ai1. Schnitzer reported that an Englewood business has
purchased '·The Return'', a piece of a11work from the Art at the Shuttle Stops collection.
Commission members were told that the City will receive twenty-five percent from the purchase
cost , or $625 that will go to Community Development to replenish the sculpture fund . It was also
noted that Cha se Bank has commissioned with an artist from the Art Shuttle program for a piece of
art . Be11oluzzi asked how many pieces of artwork are in the Art Shuttle collection. Schnitzer and
Stewart replied that there are 15 to 18 pieces . Discussion followed regarding the Englewood art
community and media coverage. Bertoluzzi info1med the Commission that Englewood Arts is

completing an application to nominate the City of Englewood for the Governor's Arts Award •
which would bring in some publicity. Discussion followed.
In regard to a repo11 on Englewood Arts, Bertoluzzi reported that the Englewood Arts Board
continues to focus on the Cultural Arts Center project that includes putting together promotional

packets and working on conceptual drawings. Stewart asked if the packet will have information on
raising money . Bertoluzzi explained that per agreement, Glenarm Partners, the developer, will be
responsible for raising one hundred percent of the money.
Moore discussed the upcoming Juried Art Show scheduled for April 3 through 26 . Commission
members were told that the reception will be on Friday, April 4th from 6-8pm. Moore reported that
printed material on the show will soon be available.
Discussion turned to an update on the Parks and Recreation Commission. Black stated that the
Parks and Recreation Commission has been informed that Moore is no longer able to serve as the
Cultural Arts Commission Liaison. Black noted that the Parks and Recreation Commission will be
recognizing Moore at its April meeting . In regard to last month's discussion regarding Enger
replacing Moore as the Liaison, Black stated that an alternate member cannot serve as a Liaison so
the Commission will need to appoint someone else . It was decided that Schnitzer would serve as
the Liaison to the Parks and Recreation Commission with Bartunek as a back-up .
VIII. UPCOMING EVENTS

Bertoluzzi announced the next Englewood Arts concert would be Amazing Grace : Songs of
Faith & Folk on Saturday, March 8 at 7:30pm.
Hayes discussed upcoming shows and programs for the Museum of Outdoor Arts including the
Joellyn Duesberry: The Big Picture April 4 111 through June 2i11 and an evening event at Samson
Park on April 28 that will include the unveiling of three sculptures and a performance by Up
Close & Musical.

There were no items for Director's Choice.
X. COMMISSION MEMBERS' CHOICE
City Council Member Woodward announced that City Council will be recognizing Olga Wolosyn
as Citizen of the Year on Monday, May 1th that will include a celebration of her life .
Woodward reported that he is the City Council Liaison to the Chamber of Commerce and the
Chamber has been discussing an idea in regard to art shows in the site next to the hobby store .
Woodward stated he would be in touch if anythin g develops . As Stewart as touched upon,
Woodward discussed the Chamber taking over the Englewood Days event and holding it on
September 26 and 27 in conjunction with Artabout Englewood. Discussion followed regarding the
car show held on September 13 th as a separate event for 2008.
Enger distributed information on the yct Annual Englewood Unleashed Chili Cook-off on April 12
from 11 am to 2pm at the Malley Senior Center.
