CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION
Minutes of April 2, 2008
The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to
order at 5:46pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the Civic Center City Council Conference Room .

• II. REVIEW OF AGENDA

There were no changes to the agenda .
III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes or corrections to the minutes of March 5,
2008. Bertoluzzi had a change under Committee Reports regarding the Governor's
Arts Award , noting that the application is being submitted by Englewood Arts and
not the Museum of Outdoor Arts.
Bertoluzzi noted that Englewood Arts submit ted the application today. Recreation Manager Gary
Hultberg recognized the te1Tific job that Englewood Al1s did on the application and noted that it
was amazing to see everything that th e City ha s d one wi th the a11s over the years. Discussion
followed .
All were in favor. The minutes were approved as amended.
IV. INTRODUCTI O N OF GUESTS
Newly appointed Youth Commission Member Natasha Fish was introduced .

VI. O LD B USINESS
In regard to the Cultural Arts Commission Annual Report , Bertoluzzi asked if there were any •
changes or additions to the fact sheet. Discussion followed. Hultberg info1med the Commission
that a date has not been scheduled yet for them to meet with City Council.
Di scuss ion turned to the Red Wedges and signage. Discussion followed in regard to signage for
the artwork. Hultberg reported that he would do some research on options for signage and bring a
report back to next month's meeting for further discussion .
Bertoluzz i reported that Duo has broken but that MOA has found someone to repair it and make it
sturdier. Bertoluzz i told the Commission that MOA Representative Tim Vacca has assured him
that the art piece will be fixed.
Bertoluzzi discussed renovations to the Museum of Outdoor Arts; noting that it will reopen in
conjunction with the Opening Reception for the Joellyn Duesbeny The Big Picture exhibit on
Frida~April4,2008.
V II. COMMITTEE RE PORT S
Discussion began on an update for Englewood Arts. In addition to the submittal of the application
for the Go ve rnor's Arts Award , Be11oluzzi reported that Englewood Arts has also submitted an
application nominating the City of Englewood for the Collaborative Community Planning Process
by the Colorado Citizens for Culture, an Arts for Colorado affiliate . Bertoluzzi explained that
eight cities in Colorado will be selected to participate in a year-long program to help communities •
integrate arts into long te1m community planning . Discussion followed .
Schnitzer gave a report on Public Art, discussing the recent purchase of art from the Art at the
Shuttle Stops collection by a local business.
Discussion turned to Michael Mo11on, Executive Director for the Greater Englewood Chamber of
Commerce. Mr. Morton thanked the Commission for inviting him to tonight's meeting. Mr.
Mo11on spoke in regard to the collaboration between the Chamber and BID (Broadway
Improvement District) over the last three months to beautify the area on Broadway between
Hampden and Yale . Mr. Mo11on discussed the plan to bring a cohesive look over the eight/ nine
block area by putting a couple sculptures on each side of each block. Discussion followed. Mr.
Monon discussed ways to bring in more activity on Broadway including a better mix of stores ,
redoing the walk-thru's and including the a11s. Discussi o n followed regarding events and festivals
hosted by the Chamber and ways the Chamber would like to include the arts. Mr. Morton
suggested that one or more Cultural Arts Commission Member attend the upcoming Chamber
meeting. Mr. Morton spoke in regard to working with the Cultural Arts Commission in
promoting events and the arts. Be11oluzzi suggested that that Mr. Mo11on meet with the Public
Art Committee to fu11her discuss the a11 along Broadway . Discussion followed.
In regard to an update on the March Parks and Recreation Commission meeting , Schnitzer
repo11ed that representatives from the Englewood Youth Sports Association were present to
discuss the Midwest Plains Regional Babe Ruth Softball Tournament that EYSA will be hosting
on July 17-20, 2008. Schnitzer stated that the tournament should bring in close to one thousand
players and spectators into the Englewood area and businesses. Commission members were told •
that EYSA is looking for families to host the players , ages 14-16 . Schnitzer also reported that
there was discussion pertaining to the Chamber putting together a packet for the visitors regarding
restaurants and activities in the Englewood area .
• Schnitzer infonned the Commission that Beverly Bradshaw, Chairperson of the South Suburban
Park Foundation was also at the March meeting to give a presentation on the South Suburban Park
Foundation that included a power point presentation narrated by world renowned photographer, John
Fielder.
In regard to the redeve lopment of the Broken Tee Englewood (Englewood Golf Course), Schnitzer
reported that staff reported that there is a chance the course will open on time weather permitting .
Schnitzer noted that the Parks and Recreation Commission will be recognizing Janet Moore at the
April meeting for her years of service as Cultural Arts Commission Liaison.
VIII. UPCOMING EVENTS
Bertoluzzi announced the upcoming Englewood Arts production "Wait Until Dark " on April l l,
12 , 13 , 18 and 19 . Schnitzer reported that the Englewood Schools District Art Show will open
tomonwvv night in the Englewood Public Library and the Juried Art Show will be opening on
Friday evening.
Commission member Stewart spoke in regard to the Artabout Englewood scheduled for
September 27 and 28, 2008 . Stewart stated that she has information in regard to costs for anyone
who is interested . In regard to previous discussion on Englewood High School and Clayton
Elementary School participating in this year's event, Stewart reported that the Malley Senior
Recreation Center has also joined in with this year's event.

X . COMMISSION MEMBERS' CHOICE
In regard to ideas for the Chamber 's plan for bringing in artwork along Broadway, Schnitzer
suggested that those commission members who ha ve interest meet to brainstorm ideas. It was
decided that the item would be put on next month 's agenda for discussion. Mr. Morton asked
commission members if they thought there were a11ists out there to rent booths at the festivals .
Schnitze r stated that commission members could start putting the information out there to see if
there is any interest. It was suggested that the Chamber sta11 with Englewood and then expand out
to Littleton and the Santa Fe Art Di strict.
Mr . M011on invited commission members to the upcoming April Business After Hours event on
April 17 th from 5-7pm at Twin Dragon.
Commission Member Enger reminded the Commission of Englewood Unleashed Chili Cook-Off
on Satruday, April I th from 11 a to 2pm at the Malley Senior Recreation Center.
