CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION
Minutes of August 1, 2001
The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order
at 5 :50pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the City Manager's Conference Room at the Civic Center
building.

REVIEW OF AGENDA
There were no changes to the agenda.
INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS
Chairperson Bertoluzzi welcomed new members Kate Dulaney and Gary Gartner. Commission
members introduced themselves to the new members. Recreation Manager Hultberg informed the new
members that an orientation would be held for them prior to the September 5th Commission meeting at
5:30pm.
IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Chairperson Bertoluzzi asked if there were :.rny corrections or changes to the minutes of
June 6, 2001. In regards to Committee Reports and the motion made by Commission
Member Moore, Bertoluzzi asked that the second to last sentence be struck from the
minutes. Bertoluzzi also noted that the last sentence needed to be read "The motion
passed with four ayes and one abstention by Commission Member Tomasso. Bertoluzzi
also requested that the second motion made regarding t he General Iron Works Photo
Grant, the motion read " ...... approve the General Iron Works Photographic Project.
The minutes were approved as amended.
Chairperson Bertoluzzi asked if there were any corrections or changes to the minutes of
July 11, 2001. A motion was made to accept the minutes of July 11, 2001 as presented.
The motion passed unanimously .
V. NEW BUSINESS
Discussion moved on to general Commission Goals and Objectives. Chairperson Bertoluzzi told the
new members that the mission of the Cultural Arts Commission is to bring art-related issues to City
Council. In regards to goals and objectives, commission members Dulaney and Gartner were
informed that more in-depth discussion would be held during their orientation prior to the September
meeting.
Bertoluzzi stated that he thought it would be beneficial to discuss the role of the Cultural Arts
Commission in the upcoming bond election process . Recreation Manager Hultberg distributed a fact
sheet on the bond project. Bertoluzzi asked Hultberg ifthere was any specific suggestion in how the
Commission could be of service. Hultberg stated, that as a body , the Commission could support the
project; as an individual , the first of several Citizen Advisory Committee meetings would be held
Thursday , August 2nct , 7pm , at the Malley Senior Recreation Center. Commission members were
informed that Selwyn Hewitt has stepped forward to help lead the campaign steering committee , called
"Englewood for Recreation Committee". Discussion followed.
VI. OLD BUSINESS
The 2000 Cultural Arts Commission End-of-Year Reports were distributed to commission members.
After a brief discussion , commission members decided on August 20th to present the report to City
Council. A postcard would be sent to commission members as a reminder.
VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS

City Council Liaison Wolosyn announced that Lawrence Argents was selected as the artist for the four •
entry port monuments. Wolosyn discussed Mr. Argents background, including doing art for the Richie
Center. Discussion followed regarding the make-up of the selection committee . Commission
members were told that the committee would be meeting tomorrow with Mr. Argents to review ideas
for the monuments.
Commission Member Moore asked who was responsible for the bus stops. Recreation Manager
Hultberg replied that the kiosks are contracted and that the City does not control what is advertised on
them. Moore explained that during a recent trip, she noticed that artwork is displayed in the bus stops
in Orange County, California.
Vice Chairperson Tomasso updated the Commission on the General Iron Works Photo Grant.
Tomasso announced that a meeting with the building committee has been scheduled for Thursday,
August 16th at 8 :00a.m. Tomasso noted that City Council Member Grazulis was to have spoken to the
directors in regards to the project but that he has not heard if that conversation has taken place .
Tomasso reported that Lauri Dannemiller with Community Development has helped in reviewing the
information and making some changes in regards to wording. Chairperson Bertoluzzi asked if the
meeting on August 16th was to identify a site. Hultberg said the meeting was to present the proposal to
the Civic Center Furnishing Committee.
Discussion followed regarding the formation of a Public Art Committee , a special committee that
would be responsible for identifying and evaluating projects bringing art to Englewood. Chairperson
Bertoluzzi stated that the item would be put on the agenda for the September meeting to appoint such a
committee. Bertoluzzi asked if there was a commission member interested in chairing the committee.
Commission Member Moore discussed setting procedures , etc. for the commission. Bertoluzzi stated •
that once the committee is established , the commission could start establishing guidelines.

Discussion moved on to the Little Dry Creek Sculpture Garden . In regards to interest in the "His and
Her" piece, Recreation Manager Hultberg reported that he had spoken to Ms. Kerrane, the artist.
Hultberg explained that she was initially reluctant in giving a selling price but then gave a price of
$10 ,000 with that being highly negotiable. Hultberg updated the new commission members in regards
to the sculpture garden. Chairperson Bertoluzzi asked for discussion on the "His and Her" piece.
Discussion followed. Hultberg informed the Commission that the artists would begin removing the
artwork along Little Dry Creek starting Monday , August 61h but noted that due to the complexity of the
"His and Her" piece , it would probably be removed last. Discussion ensued. Due to a lack of call for
action on the "His and Her" piece, the Commission would not purse the purchase of the piece .
Bertoluzzi noted that if the Commission starts looking for a piece of art for a specific location , the
Commission could request a submittal from Ms. Kerrane.
Chairperson Bertoluzzi reported that he had been approached by some Englewood business in regards
to the round a bout at Cherokee and Floyd as a location for art. Bertoluzzi discussed a partnership
among the business , the Cultural Arts Commission and MOA. Bertoluzzi stated that he has spoken to
Cynthia Madden of MOA in regards to the project and that she is interested and has an artist.
Discussion followed.
Discussion began on the Exploratory Committee . City Council Liaison Wolosyn briefed the new
members on the Exploratory Committee and noted two major accomplishments : the writing of a
business plan and the setting up of the ECACA Board. Wolosyn informed commission members that
the ECACA had applied for 501 c3 status and was notified yesterday that they had received it. In
regards to submitting an RFP for the former City Hall site , Wolosyn reported that the Committee's
RFP was not selected but that their request has been submitted to Community Development to evaluate
for a number of other sites.
• VIII. DIRECTOR'S AND COMMISSION MEMBERS' CHOICE
Recreation Manager Hultberg reported on the Centennial Park Expansion/Rockies Field . Hultberg
stated that the project is on track with an estimated date of completion in October. Discussion
followed.
Hultberg announced the Parks and Recreation Summer Drama production "Carousel" would be
playing Thursday through Sunday , August 2-5 . Hultberg noted that he had heard the MOA event
including Up Close & Musical was an excellent production. In regards to the Cowboy Campfire event
sponsored by the Department of Parks and Recreation, Hultberg commented that despite the weather,
the tum out was good and that it would be made into an annual event.
City Council Liaison Wolosyn spoke in regards to the Olde Tyme Fair and an attraction by ECACA.
Hultberg noted that MOA will also be participating in the event.
Commission Member Gates informed Chairperson Bertoluzzi that he would be interested in chairing
the public art committee. Commission members agreed on Englewood Public Arts Committee as a
name for the committee . It was determined that an announcement would be put in the upcoming
Englewood Citizen to look for volunteers to serve on the committee.
Vice Chairperson Tomasso distributed flyers for an upcoming show that he would be participating in.
In regards to SCFD funding , Hultberg reported that he had obtained an information packet and
application. Chairperson Bertoluzzi would review the information.
Hultberg informed commission members that he had spoken to Mr. Riffel in regards to some artwork
he was considering donating to the City . Hultberg explained that the buyer of the house wanted the
sculptures and that it is no longer available to the City.
