CALL TO ORDER City of Englewood CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of December 5, 2001 The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5 :47pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the City Council Conference Room at the Civic C e nter. Present: Ab sent : Eric Bertoluzzi , Chairperson Ray Tomasso , Vice Chairperson Janet Moore , Commission Member (arrived at 6:00pm) Joel Burrage , Youth Commission Member (arrived at 5:50pm) Mary Lynn Baird , Englewood School District Liaison (arrived at 5:52pm) Kate Dulaney, Commission Member Gary Gartner, Commission Member Gary Hultberg, Recreation Manager Michael Blimes , Midas Consulting Olga Wolosyn, City Council Liaison Jerrell Black, ex officio John Gates , Commission Member Rosemary LaP o rta , Commission Member REVIEW OF AGENDA There were no changes or additions to the agenda. III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairperson Bertoluzzi asked if there were any corrections or changes to the minutes of November 7, 2001. There were none. The minutes were approved as presented. The motion passed unanimously. IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS v. Chairperson Bertoluzzi introduced Michael Blimes with Midas Consulting, who was asked to attend the meeting to briefl y discu ss the Feasibility Study Final Report. NEW BUSINESS Mr. Blimes began by discussing key objectives of the study including securing private contributions , identifying potential donors , developing a timeline, staffing structure , budget requirements , etc. Blimes discussed the interview process of potential donors, and noted that specific responses could be found in the R1::port's Appendix. Blimes concluded with Midas' final rating for likelihood of success and recommendations. Bertoluzzi asked Mr . Blimes how many copies of the Report Midas was to provide . Slimes responded that they provided one bound copy and one additional to make copies of. Bertoluzzi told Commission members to contact him if they had not yet seen a copy of the Report . Bertoluzzi thanked Blimes for his presentation. Blimes told Commission members to forward any questions they had regarding the Report to Jerrell Black, and that he would respond to Black. Mr. Blimes left at 6: l 5pm. VI. OLD BUSINESS Chairperson Bertoluzzi commended Commission Member Moore for the Commission's float, which had won 2nct place in the City's Holiday parade. Moore said that anyone interested in using the float could contact her. Discussion then turned to Commission members ' attendance to Cultural Arts Commission meetings . Chairperson Bertoluzzi reported that attendance for a couple of members has been inconsistent, and that the issue needed to be addressed. Commission Member Gartner told Commission members that he had not attended any meetings thus far because he had been out of town frequently in the last few months. Chairperson Bertoluzzi said that action might be taken in the future regarding positions of those members not in regular attendance . VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS Due to City Council Liaison Olga Wolosyn and Commission Member Rosemary LaPorta not being present, Recreation Manager Hultberg reported on entry port monuments. Hultberg said that he believed the issue to be on hold . Vice Chairperson Ray Tomasso then gave Commission an update on the General Iron Works Photo Grant. Tomasso said that the two photographers had signed contracts on Monday. Bertol4zzi asked when the Commission would be able to see some photos. Tomasso responded that December 28th had • been set as the deadline for photos to be turned in , after which time a jury will convene to select 10 • photos. Tomasso added that several possible locations have been identified on the third floor of the Civic Center for the photos to be displayed. Due to the absence of Commissio n Member John Gates, Gary Hultberg reported on the Public Art Committee. Hultberg said that he believed the Committee had met three times. Chairperson Bertoluzzi commented that he would like to be notified of the meeting times. Chairperson Bertoluzzi told the Commission that the Museum of Outdoor Arts was still interested in placing a sculpture in the roundabout. Vice Chairperson Tomasso said that he believed it should be a competition, and that Capital Projects Director Rick Kahm should be consulted regarding traffic concerns , etc. Bertoluzzi told commission members that the Exploratory Committee had not met. Commission Member Janet Moore reported that the Parks and Recreation Commission had called a special meeting tonight to talk with Code Enforcement about the parks off-leash pilot program. Moore commented that the Commission's regular meeting had been canceled. VIII. DIRECTOR'S AND COMMISSION MEMBERS' CHOICE Recreation Manager Hultberg told commission members that Hank Long has an interest in working with John Gates and the Public Art Committee regarding the statue "Prometheus ". The discussion included location , funding , etc. Hultberg said he would contact John Gates and have a discussion with • E .E.F. • IX. • • Chairperson Bertoluzzi brought up the subject of the January 2nct meeting, and whether it should be canceled or rescheduled due to holiday schedules. After discussion, Bertoluzzi said that the meeting would be canceled, and that it could be rescheduled if necessary. Hultberg added that those not present tonight would be notified of the cancellation. Youth Commission Member Joel Burrage reported on the High School band and choir's performances at the Civic Center's activities on Saturday. Hultberg said there were 300-400 spectators estimated at the festivities , which included Santa arriving on the Light Rail. Ray Tomasso informed commission members that the Light Rail windscreen had been seriously vandalized. He said that one of the glass panels was missing , one was badly chipped, and there was also graffiti . Tomasso added that he was trying to find out what the repair cost would be. Bertoluzzi suggested talking to RTD about the repairs , since the City has transferred ownership of the artwork . Recreation Manager Hultberg will notify Pauletta Puncerelli with the City Manager's offic·e. Janet Moore announced that the Englewood Cultural Arts Center Association and MOA had agreed to jointly sponsor a juried art show some time in 2003. Chairperson Bertoluzzi invited Commission members to a violin recital by his wife 's students on December 15th at l :30pm at the Malley Center. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 6:40pm .
