CALL TO ORDER City of Englewood CUL T UR<\L ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of July 11, 2007 The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5:46pm by Chairperson Be11oluzzi at the Civic Center City Council Conference Room . Present : Absent: Eric Bertoluzzi , Chairperson Heather Ba11unek , Commission Member Kate Dul aney, Commission Member (arrived at 5:49pm) Michael Keene , Commission Member Donna Schnitzer, Commission Member Maggie Stewa11 , Commi ss ion Member Olga Wolosyn, C it y Council Liaison Jennifer Enger, Alternate Member Janet Moore, Vice Chairperson Also Present: Mary Lynn Baird, Englewood Schools Liaison Gary Hultberg, Recreation Manager Tim Vacca, MOA Representative J ill Wilson , Candidate for Englewood City Council (arri ve d at 5 :5 l pm) REVIEW OF AGENDA Wolosyn stated that she would like to add under Publi c Art discussion related to the purchase of the watermelon wedges that are pa11 of the art at the shuttle stops collection. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Bertoluzzi asked if there were an y changes or corrections to the minutes of June 6, 2007. There were none. The minutes were approved as presented. IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS Michael Keene , former alternate member and newly appointed commission member, and Jennifer Enger, newly appointed alternate member were introduced . Commission members introduced themsel ves and welcomed the new members to the Cultural Arts Commission. V. NEW BUSINESS There were no items for New Bu siness . VI. OLD BUSINESS Commission Member Bartunek showed the new sign for Hampden Hall that she had designed and painted . Commission members were told that recreation staff has coordinated with Deputy City Manager Michael Flaherty on hanging the sign . City Council Liaison Wolosyn questioned the status of exterior signage for Hampden Hall , Courts, Lib rary and MOA . Wo losyn stated that she had been told that the metal letters were finished a nd that the City was waiting on acquiring a lift to use to hang the letters . Wolosyn noted that s he was told that the signage would be hung after July 41h. Di rector Bl ack reported th at he would fo ll ow-up with Mike Flaherty on that signage in addition to signage that was to be posted at Dartmouth and Inca VII. COMMITTEE RE PORTS Discussion was turned over to Recreation Manager Hultberg and the selection of public art for the Englewood Golf Course . Hultberg explained to the new commission members that as part of the plan for the golf course redevelopment project is a landscaped garden area with public art. Hultberg went on to explain that the Cultural Arts Commission has committed to funding fifty percent from the public art fund towards the purchase of the public art, not to exceed $15,000; with the other fifty percent coming from the Conservation Trust Fund. Commission members were told that the committee, comprised of members from the Cultural Arts Commission, Parks and Recreation Commission, City Council and Golf Course staff has now met two times and has been looking at art . Hultberg also noted that due to time constraints, the committee is pursuing completed artwork . Commission Member Schnitzer spoke in regard to her and other committee members visit to the Cherry Creek Art Festival to view artwork and to get ideas . Discussion followed regarding their findings and the possibility of having more than one piece of artwork. Commission members were told that committee members are also planning on attending the Loveland Arts Festival. • Bertoluzzi asked how the selection process will be brought to a conclusion. Wolosyn explained that the selection will be brought before the Cultural Arts Commission and Parks and Recreation Commission for their review . Bertoluzzi commented that the Commission did not approve funding for more that one piece of art . Wolosyn replied that the motion from the Cultural Arts Commission was to fund fifty percent up to $15,000 for the purchase of artwork. Discussion followed regarding the selection process for a completed piece of artwork. The Commission • decided that the selection process would be open to artists to apply. Discussion followed regarding the parameters for the RFP to be publicized. Commission members were told that a recommendation would be brought to them at the October meeting . Wolosyn discussed the Commission's purchase last year of the daisies from the art at the shuttle stops collection . Wolosyn informed the Commission that she had been approached in regard to the Commission now purchasing the watennelon wedges located at the art shuttle stop in the piazza area. Wolosyn reported that the cost for the large wedge is $13,500 and $10,000 for the small with a purchase price of $20 ,000 for both . Wolosyn stated that she thought the artist would take $15 ,000 with $5 ,000 going back to the public art fund . Commission members were told that if the wedges would be removed if not purchased . Wolosyn asked if there was any interest from the Commission to purchase the artwork . There was no interest. Discussion mo ved to Englewood Arts . Bettoluzzi briefed the new commission members on Englewood Cultural Arts Center Association and reported that there will be a retreat this coming Tuesday. Black ga ve an update on the Parks and Recreation Commission and the golf course redevelopment project that remains on schedule to open May 24, 2008 . Hultberg announced that Carolyn Armstrong has been appointed from the Parks and Recreation Commission to serve on the art selection committee for the golf course . • • • • VIII. UPCOMING EVENTS Commission members discussed the upcoming Artabout Eng lewood on Saturday, August 11 th . Schnitzer asked how many artists have signed up for the art tours. Bartunek reported that there are sixteen, noting that there were eighteen last year. Di scussion followed regarding the days events. MOA representative Tim Vacca announced that MOA 's performance of"Sacred Water" will also be on August 11 th at the CityCenter Amphitheater. IX. DIRECTOR 'S CHOICE Black invited commission members to the Annual Board and Commission Appreciatio n Night scheduled for Saturday, August 25 111 at Pirates Cove (please note change of date). X. COMMISSION MEMBERS' CHOICE XI. Vacca invited commission members to "Sacred Water" on August 11 th. Jill Wilson, City Council candidate , introduced herself and told the Commission that she is visiting the City's boards and commissions to find out what the different committees are doing . Schnitzer discussed her idea for an a11 project for the Commission 's booth at Funfest. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 7 :05pm . ~tlct~· Deborah A. Severa, Re cording Secretary
