CALL TO ORDER City of Englewood CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of October 3, 2007 • • The regular monthl y meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5:45pm b y Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the Ci vic Center City Council Conference Room . Present: Absent: Also Present: Eric Bertoluzzi, Chairperson Janet Moore , Vice Chairperson Heather Bartunek, Commission Member Jennifer Enger, Alternate Member (arrived at 5:49pm) Michael Keene , Commission Member Donna Schnitzer, Commission Member Jerrell Black, ex officio Kate Dulaney, Commission Member Maggie Stewart , Commission Member Mary Lynn Baird, Englewood Schools Liaison Gary Hultberg, Recreation Manager Jim Woodward, City Council Liaison Tim Vacca, Museum of Outdoor Arts Representative II. REVIEW OF AGENDA III. There were no changes to the agenda . APPROVAL OF MINUTES Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes or corrections to the minutes of September 5, 2007. There were none. The minutes were approved as presented. IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS Jim Woodward , City Council Liaison , was introduced . Commission members introduced themsel v es. Bertoluzzi asked Woodward if he will be replacing Mayor Wolosyn as the City Council Liaison . Woodward explained that with the passing of Mayor Wolosyn who was the Cultural Arts Commiss ion Liaison, he would be attending the Cultural Arts Commission meetings for no w until a new liaison is appointed . Woodw ard added that he wanted to assure commission members that they were still being represented . V. NE\V BUSINESS VI. Due to the postponement of the selection art for the 2008 Englewood Calendar, Bertoluzzi announced that the selection of the top fifty has been rescheduled for Monday, October 81h at I :30pm and the final selection on Thursday, October 11 th at 6 :00pm . OLD BUSINESS Discussion was turned o ver to MOA Representative Tim Vacca who informed the Commission that the Cynthia Madden Leitner with the Museum of Outdoor Arts will be dedicating a sculpture to the City in memory of Olga Wolosyn . Vacca distributed photos of the sculpture "Duo" and a diagram of the piazza area where the two-piece sculpture will be placed . Commission Member Keene asked if the sculpture will be donated to the City . Vacca reported that MOA and the City are currently working on the agreement. Following a brief discussion, A motion was made by Commission Member Schnitzer and seconded by Commission Member Bartunek to recommend to City Council to accept the Museum of Outdoor Art's plans for placement of a sculpture in memory of Mayor Olga \-Volosyn. All were in favor. Motion passed. Bertoluzzi spoke in regard to what a wonderful gesture this is, noting that it comes from Cynthia 's heart. Bertoluzzi added that this ceremony/dedication will be the first of many to follow . Bartunek asked who will be doing the plaque for the memorial. Vacca reported that it is his understanding that Cynthia Madden Leitner will have her husband do the plaque . Keene asked in regard to the dimensions of the sculpture . Commission members were told that the first piece is 22 ft in height and the second piece is 15 to 18 ft in height. Vacca noted that it is grand in scale compared to the art that is in the piazza area now . Bertoluzzi thanked Vacca . VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS Black discussed with the Commission an invoice from Community Development for reimbursement of the AI1about Englewood event. Black reported that all budget requests for programs and projects will need to be pre-approved in the future . Discussion followed. • Discussion moved on to an update for Englewood Arts. In regard to the agreement between • Englewood Arts and EURA to negotiate exclusively on the Acoma Street property, Bertoluzzi repo11ed that meetings are continuing with the appropriate people and groups and progress is being made . Be11oluzzi stated that it is his hopes that in the near future that they have something to announce . Black gave an update on the Parks and Recreation Commission , stating that the September meeting was held at the new inline hockey rink and basketball court at Englewood Middle School where a groundbreaking ceremony was held . Black reported that progress continues to be made with the Englewood Golf Course renovation project and the end-of-season report for Pirates Cove is showing above record attendance and revenues. VIII. UPCOMING EVENTS Bertoluzzi announced upcoming events including the Englewood AI1s concert, Mountain Music Duo , on October 27 1h at 2pm . IX. DIRECTOR'S CHOICE There were no items for Director 's Choice . X. COMMISSION MEMBERS' CHOICE Discussion turned to Commission Member's Choice where commission members shared their • sorrow and thoughts on the recent passing of Mayor Wolosyn. • • • Bartunek told the Commission that they will be looking for a replacement for Olga for the Frontiers Program where they go into the middle school classrooms to use art to teach math . Bertoluzzi commented that Olga really enjoyed the planning and creative aspect of the program . Bertoluzzi told the Commission that over the last few months Olga has spoken about going back to school to get her teacher 's certificate , noting that she was so proud of the program and its results . Bartunek told the Commission that Olga had also spoken about wanting to paint more once her term ended on City Council and had more free time . Woodward told commission members that he is here to support the group in any way. Woodward went on to say that he is going to miss Olga as a friend and a colleague . Schnitzer stated that she is substitute teaching for Commission Member Kate Dulaney while Kate is away at a conference. Schnitzer explained that both Kate and Englewood Schools Liaison Marylynn Baird are at the conference where they were going to be presenting Olga with an award . Schnitzer went on to explain that Kate and Marylynn are planning on showing the slideshow for Olga's award also to the Commission. Schnitzer spoke in regard to the incredible person that Olga was , commenting that there is now a hole in the universe . Commission Member Enger spoke in regard to how Olga had inspired her. XI.
