CALL TO ORDER City of Englewood CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of November 7, 2007 The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5:45pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the Civic Center City Council Conference Room . Present: Absent: Eric Bertoluzzi, Chairperson Janet Moore , Vice Chairperson (arrived at 5:48pm) Kate Dulaney, Commission Member Michael Keene , Commission Member (arrived at 5:50pm) Donna Schnitzer, Commission Member Jerrell Black, ex officio Heather Bartunek, Commission Member Jennifer Enger, Alternate Member Maggie Stewart, Commission Member Also Present: Mary Lynn Baird, Englewood Schools Liaison Gary Hultberg , Recreation Manager Bob Spada, Golf Course Manager (left at 5:56pm) Jim Woodward, Mayor Pro Tern Ray Tomasso, City Council Member Jill Wilson, Englewood Resident REVIEW OF AGENDA There were no changes to the agenda. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes or corrections to the minutes of October 3, 2007. There were none. The minutes were approved as presented. IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS v. • Director Black introduced Jill Wilson, newly elected City Council Member and Bob Spada, Golf Course Manager. NEW BUSINESS Discussion was turned over to Bob Spada and the selection of art for the golf course. Spada informed the Commission that the City received twenty-two entries and has selected a sculpture named "Impact" which the committee has renamed "Broken Tee". Spada distributed photographs of the sculpture . Spada reported that with the redevelopment of the golf course, the City is looking at renaming the golf course and has formed a committee to select names to be considered. Spada went on to explain that "Broken Tee" is one of eight names to be presented to the Parks and Recreation Commission for a recommendation to City Council. In regard to the sculpture, Spada told the Commission that there are nine "Impact" sculptures and the one being purchased by the City will be the only one in Colorado. The Commission was told that the price for the artwork is $14 ,000 plus $300 for installation. Commission Member Schnitzer, who served on the selection committee, stated that the artwork is six feet tall. The question was asked in regard to a location for the sculpture . Spada reported that a site has not yet been determined but that there are a number of • • • VI. VII. locations that are being considered . Bertoluzzi asked if they are all near the clubhouse . Spada replied yes. Schnitzer noted that the committee was unanimous in the decision . Commission Member Keene asked if there was only one piece . Schnitzer responded that there is only one piece and that the committee chose to focus on purchasing one piece at a time since there was not a lot of time; noting that another piece can be considered at a later date . Discussion followed . O LD BUS INESS Due to her late arri val, Vice Chairperson Moore referred back to the approval of the minutes of October 7th, stating that she had a correction. For Upcoming Events, Moore stated that the October 27 th concert was Mountain Music Duo and not Extasis as reported in the minutes. In regard to the art sculpture that is being donated by MOA in memory of Mayor Wolosyn, Bertoluzzi reported that the dedication will be on Monday , December 1 oth at 5pm in the piazza area. Black distributed to commission members a copy of the October 25, 2007, Congressional Record - Extension of Remarks , that gave tribute to Mayor Wolosyn by the Honorable Diana D eGette . Bertoluzzi reported that there was also a wonderful article on Olga and her accomplishments on the front page of the Englewood Citizen . C O MMIT TEE RE PO RTS Discussion turned to an update for Committee Reports . Bertoluzzi reported that Englewood Arts is primarily involved with the redevelopment of the Acoma Street property. Bertoluzzi told the Commission that a draft has been written by the attorney for EURA that will give Englewood Arts a two -year window to raise funds for a cultural arts center. Bertoluzzi discussed a recent incident invol ving a problem with wiring at Hampden Hall. Bertoluzzi reported that the City was able to make arrangements so that it could be handled in- house which assured that it would be finished in time for a November 24th performance. Bertoluzzi told the Commission that he is both pleased and grateful to the City and Public Works Department for their efficiency in handling the situation . In regard to an update on the October 81h Parks and Recreation Commission meeting, Black reported that the Commission had four Cushing Park neighbors attend who voiced their concerns over the Cushing Skate Park . Black explained that City staff is gathering data to bring back to the Commission in January for further discussion and a plan of action . Discussion followed. VIII. UP COMING EVENTS Bertoluzzi announced upcoming events including the November 24th Englewood Arts concert, Music for the Four Seasons. Bertoluzzi also discussed the upcoming performances for The Gifts of the Magi . Commission members and guests discussed upcoming art shows and events. IX. DIREC TOR'S CHO ICE x . There were no items for Director 's Choice . C O MMISSI O N MEM BE RS ' C HOICE Mayor Pro Tern Jim Woodward informed the Commission that City Council passed u nanimously the Commission's recommendation to accept MO A's placement of the art sculpture in memory of Olga . Woodward also noted that City Council will be donating $300 from City Council funds to Englewood Arts in memory of Olga. • Discussion turned to Ray Tomasso, City Council Member. Bertoluzzi thanked Tomasso for his four-years of service and efforts while serving on City Council. • • Moore reported with sadness that Art Nie will be closing at the end of the week. Moore noted that some artists have moved to new galleries in the Santa Fe art district. Schnitzer commented in regard to the number of homeless people she had noticed awhile back when she walked her dog along the Platte River bike trail. Schnitzer asked if there is a place for them to if the weather turns cold. Woodward explained that Safety Services works with a network of churches in Englewood that provide shelter for the homeless when it gets cold. XI. ADJO URNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 6: l 9pm.
