CALL TO ORDER City of Englewood CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of February 7, 2007 The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5:45pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the City Council Conference Room at the Civic Center. Present: Absent: Also Present: Eric Bertoluzzi, Chairperson Janet Moore, Vice Chairperson Heather Bartunek, Commission Member Kate Dulaney, Commission Member Donna Schnitzer, Commission Member Maggie Stewart, Commission Member (arrived at 5:51pm) Olga Wolosyn , City Council Liaison (arrived at 5:52pm) Jerrell Black, ex officio Amy Laugesen, Commission Member Mary Lynn Baird, Englewood Schools Liaison Michael Keene, Alternate Member Gary Hultberg, Recreation Manager Tim Vacca, Museum of Outdoor Arts REVIEW OF AGENDA There were no changes to the agenda. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes and/or corrections to the minutes of January 3, 2007. There were none. The minutes were approved as presented. IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS There were no guests present. V. NEW BUSINESS Commission Member Schnitzer reported that she had attended the Museum of Outdoor Art's lecture "Vessels, Vines, Vehicles", that included a panel discussion on the current role ofceramics as art in the twenty-first century. Schnitzer spoke in regard to how well that type of event worked in Hampden Hall. VI. OLD BUSINESS VII . There were no items for Old Business . COMMITTEE REPORTS Bertoluzzi asked Schnitzer if she has spoken to Alexan City Center about the mural wall. Schnitzer stated that the last contact she had with them was when she delivered information in regard to art in Englewood . Discussion moved on to the Art Shuttle Committee. Schnitzer reported that the committee has been discussing a Call for Entries for additional art at the shuttle stops. Commission members discussed • the future of the art shuttle. It was suggested that the Commission write a letter to RTD in support of the art shuttle and it continuing to run at a low cost to its users . City Council Liaison Wolosyn told commission members that she will keep them apprised as things proceed. Director Black stated that staff would work on a draft letter of support that would be brought back to the Commission for its review and signature. In regard to the Call for Entries, Schnitzer stated that the press release will go out on March 12, 2007, with judging on April 26 1h and installation of the pieces in June. Moore asked how many pieces are being sought. Schnitzer replied approximately five. Discussion followed. The Commission discussed bus benches, including the one at Girard and Lincoln that had been painted by Commission Member Dulaney's art students. Bertoluzzi informed the Commission that Englewood Arts is currently working on the concert schedule for next year. Discussion followed in regard to Englewood Arts working with Englewood Schools on its grant programs. Bertoluzzi noted that this will be the last year for the PEAK program. Commission members were briefed on the January Parks and Recreation Commission meeting. Black noted that representatives from Safety Services had attended the meeting to discuss graffiti, issues with Cushing Park, and a recent bill in legislation concerning metal thefts in the metro area . VIII. UPCOMING EVENTS Bertoluzzi announced upcoming concerts including The Brass Quintet on Saturday, February 10th and the Sankofa on Saturday, February 24th . The Commission was told that the annual Back to Bach concert will be on Saturday, March 3rd. Bertoluzzi stated that he has been discussing with Jerry Schell, producer of Scrooge, the possibility of three different shows at Hamdpen Hall the end of this year into next year. IX. DIRECTOR'S CHOICE There were no items for Director's Choice. X. COMMISSION MEMBERS' CHOICE In regard to the Art at the Shuttle Stops and the sunflowers the Commission purchased in April, Hultberg clarified with the Commission that it is their intent that the sunflowers stay where they are for the time being. Commission members agreed to keep the sunflowers at the Walmart art shuttle stop for now but discussed their ideas of where they could eventually be placed, including being used as an entry port monument on the south end of Broadway. Wolosyn noted that Community Development is in the process of doing a South Broadway Improvement Plan which will include the possibility of an entry port monument. Black stated that he would follow-up with Community Development. • Commission Member Stewart reported that ifthere is not an Englewood school interested in • painting a bus stop bench, her students from Denver Academy could do it. Stewart commented that Denver Academy services a lot of Englewood. • • • Moore discussed the re-opening of Art -Nie , and reported that it is looking for new artists. Moore stated that the Painted Violins will be at Art-Nie in April, following the Musical Fairytales concert on April 2 !5 1 • Commission Member Dulaney apologized for her absences , explaining that she was on the Englewood Schools Strategic Planning Committee . Dulaney explained that she had a draft of what was presented to the Board of Education for anyone who was interested. Dulaney noted that arts had been discussed as part of the education opportunity plan . Commission Member Bartunek asked Moore in regard to the Juried Art Show. Moore replied that she is still deciding on days and times for the show to be open to the public . Bertoluzzi told the Commission that Commission Member Laugesen 's schedule has changed and that she will no longer be able to serve on the Cultural Arts Commission . Discussion followed in regard to filling Laugesen 's vacancy. Wolosyn explained that it will be City Council's decision. XI. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 6 :20pm. Deborah A .
