CALL TO ORDER City of Englewood CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of November 6, 2002 The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5:45pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the City Council Conference Room at the Civic Center building. Present: Absent: Also Present: Eric Bertoluzzi, Chairperson Kate Dulaney, Commission Member Darrell Freeland, Commission Member Janet Moore, Commission Member Donna Schnitzer, Commission Member Maggie Stewart, Commission Member (arrived at 5:55pm) Ray Tomasso, Vice Chairperson Olga Wolosyn, City Council Liaison Jerrell Black, ex officio Mary Lynn Baird, Englewood School District Liaison Gary Hultberg, Recreation Manager Cynthia Madden-Leitner, Museum of Outdoor Arts (left at 6:03pm) Bob Wells, Chicken Lips Molly Maginn, Chicken Lips e JI. REVIEW OF AGENDA • Cynthia Madden-Leitner was added to the agenda for discussion on artwork for the round-a-bout. III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairperson Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes or corrections to the minutes of October 2, 2002. There were none. The minutes were approved as presented. IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS AND NEW MEMBERS v. Cynthia Madden Leitner, Director for the Museum of Outdoor Arts was introduced. Bob Wells and Molly Maginn with Chicken Lips were also introduced. NEW BUSINESS Chairperson Bertoluzzi began discussion on artwork for the round-a-bout. Bertoluzzi told the Commission that a few years ago, discussion was held with the Museum of Outdoor Arts in regard to placement of art in the round-a-bout. Bertoluzzi stated that an opportunity has come up through the Museum of Outdoor Arts that they would like to share with the Cultural Arts Commission. Discussion was turned over to Ms. Madden-Leitner. Commission members were informed that John Henry, a well known artist, has offered to sell a piece of his art collection at a fourth of its cost to the Museum of Outdoor Arts. Pictures of the artwork were distributed among commission members. Ms. Madden- Leitner explained that the piece would be 12 feet in height consisting of a painted steel base with steel rods extending from the top of the base. Ms. Madden-Leitner stated that the cost would be $30,000. Commission members were told that a decision would need to be made by December 15th. Commission Member Schnitzer asked in regard to moving the piece. Ms. Madden-Leitner stated that the question has not been asked but that she expects it to cost an additional $5,000-$6,000. Discussion followed regarding taking the proposal to the Public Art Committee. A motion was made by Commission Member Moore and seconded by Commission Member Dulaney that the Cultural Arts Commission direct the Public Art Committee to review John Henry's piece for placement at the round-a-bout and to give their recommendation. Vice Chairperson Tomasso asked ifthe City would own the piece. Ms. Madden-Leitner replied that the City could purchase the piece and retain ownership or the City could contribute funds to the Museum of Outdoor Arts to purchase the piece, making the Museum of Outdoor Arts responsible for insuring and maintaining it. Wolosyn asked if MOA would consider sharing in the expense. Ms. Madden-Leitner stated yes. The motion passed unanimously. Commission Member Schnitzer asked Ms. Madden-Leitner to find out more information regarding surface, color, etc . Discussion moved on to election of officers. Director Black told the Commission that changes to the Ordinance recommended by the Commission at last month's meeting have been forwarded to the City Attorney's Office but that those changes would not be finalized for another 4 to 6 weeks. Black advised the Board to give it some thought whether they wanted to hold election for officers tonight under the old ordinance or wait until City Council gives their approval on the new changes. A motion was made by Commission Member Moore and seconded by Commission Member Stewart that the Cultural Arts Commission postpone the election of officers until City Council has the opportunity to review the Cultural Arts Commission's proposed changes. The motion passed unanimously. VI. OLD BUSINESS Commission members discussed the Cultural Arts Commission's entry in the 2002 Holiday Parade. VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS Discussion turned to the General Iron Works Photo Project and requests for copies of the prints . Recreation Manager Hultberg explained that according to the contract, the City of Englewood has the right to reproduce the prints for City publications but does not have the right to reproduce for sale . Discussion followed regarding a photographer 's reception. It was decided that a photographer's reception would be held prior to the December 4th Cultural Arts Commission meeting. Director Black mentioned City Council's request for a large print for the Community Room. Discussion followed. There was no new business for the Public Art Committee. City Council Liaison Wolosyn discussed a future site for a cultural center. Commission Member Moore gave an update on the Parks and Recreation Commission. Discussion followed regarding last month's recommendation concerning the flower garden program. Director Black announced that the Department of Parks and Recreation did not receive the Gold Medal Award but that it is an honor to be considered in the top four in the nation. Recreation Manager Hultberg spoke in regard to the Gold Medal Application and the weight in cultural arts. • • • • vm. DIRECTOR'S AND COMMISSION MEMBERS' CHOICE Director Black had no items for Director's Choice. Commission Member Moore spoke in regard to the juried art show scheduled for February 2003. Maggie Maginn introduced Bob Wells with Chicken Lips. Mr. Wells told the Commission that he and Ms. Maginn were present to gather information regarding a cultural center. Mr. Wells noted that they are looking for a place to relocate their business. Commission Member Stewart discussed tying the flower garden program with the Public Art Committee. Chairperson Bertoluzzi announced the Colorado Young Sinfonia concert, presented by Englewood Cultural Arts Center Association, scheduled for Friday November 22"d at 7:30pm at the CityCenter Atrium. Bertoluzzi announced that also that night is the first recital of"Strings Attached" at 7pm at Clayton Elementary. Bertoluzzi noted that the violinists from Clayton and Maddox Elementary would also be performing for City Council on Monday, December 2"d . IX. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 6:45pm.
