CALL TO ORDER The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5:47pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the City Council Conference Room at the Civic Center building. Present: Absent: Also Present: Eric Bertoluzzi, Chairperson (left at 6: 15pm) Ray Tomasso , Vice Chairperson Kate Dulaney, Commission Member Jan et Moore, Commission Member Ol ga Wolosyn , City Council Liaison Joel Burrage , Youth Commission Member Mary Lynn Baird, Englewood School District Liaison Jerrell Black, ex officio Gary Hultberg, Recreation Manager Lauri Dannemiller, Senior Manager, Community Development (left at 6 : 16pm) Harold Stitt, Senior Planner, Community Development (left at 6:40pm) John Voboril, Planner I, Community Development (left at 6 :40pm) Lawrence Argents, Artist (left at 6: 16pm) Bob Gnaegy, Tacito Design (left at 6: 16pm) II. REVIEW OF AGENDA There were no changes to the agenda. III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairperson Bertoluzzi asked if there were any corrections or changes to the minutes of March 6, 2002. There were none. A motion was made to accept the minutes as presented. The motion passed unanimously. IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS v. Chairperson Bertoluzzi introduced Lauri Dannemiller with Community Development. Ms. Dannemiller introduced Lawrence Argents, Entry Port Monument artist, Bob Gnaegy with Tacito Design, and Harold Stitt and John Voboril with Community Development. NEW BUSINESS Discussion was turned over to Ms . Dannemiller who discussed Entry Port Monuments . Ms. Dannemiller ga ve a brief history on the Entry Port Monument project, explaining that plans include a monument at each entry port into Englewood but due to budget constraints, one monument will be don e per year. Dannemiller went on to explain that the Broadway/Yale monument will be the first to be completed and is the one to be discussed tonight. Ms . Dannemiller turned discussion over to City Council Member Wolosyn . Wolosyn explained that she was the City Council representative on the Entry Port Monument Committee and that Rosemary LaPorta was the representative from the Cultural Arts Commission who was replaced by Commission Member Dulaney after LaPorta's resignation. Wol osyn spoke in regard to the selection process. Ms. • Wolosyn turned discussion over to Mr. Argents. Mr. Argents discussed his art for the Broadway and Yale intersection. Discussion followed regarding the artwork. Bob Gnaegy with Tacito Design discussed signage for the monument. Commission Member Dulaney commented in regards to coming on to the committee and the entry port artwork. Questions and comments followed . Ms. Dannemiller invited the Commission to the May 61h City Council meeting where Mr. Argent's work will be presented. Discussion began on the Comprehensive Plan. Harold Stitt with Community Development gave a brief background of the Plan, stating that there are four components to the Plan, those being: Housing, Transportation, Parks and Open Space, and Business and Employment. Mr. Stitt spoke in regard to goals, objectives and strategies of the four components . Discussion followed regarding the inclusion of a Cultural Arts component to the Plan. John Voboril with Community Development spoke in regard to the creation of the Comprehensive Plan including a common theme: quality of life, infrastructure, land use and realism . Mr. Stitt and Mr. Voboril told the Commission that they would like to spend some time with them to discuss some general goals for cultural arts in Englewood. Discussion followed regarding a time to meet. Mr. Stitt noted that he would also gather information from other districts in regard to cultural art components in Comprehensive Plans. Vice Chairperson Tomasso suggested including that information in the next packet. VI. OLD BUSINESS There was no Old Business. VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS Recreation Manager Hultberg informed the Commission that an Interior Art Consultant has been hired to assist in the sizing, framing and matting, and placement of the General Iron photos. Hultberg stated that the photographs should be up in May. Commission members were told that a letter had been sent to Gary Gartner informing him of his removal from the Cultural Arts Commission due to his lack of attendance. City Council Member Wolosyn discussed the Exploratory Committee. Wolosyn reported that for the next couple of months, City Council would be looking at the budget. Wolosyn noted that $350,000 had been placed in this year's budget for the purchase of land for a cultural arts center and that it was her understanding that the same would be done for the next two to three years. Wolosyn spoke in regard to the Platte River Open Space Plan and the inclusion of a Cultural Arts Center in the Plan . Wolosyn stated that it was her hope to have a formal presentation to City Council in regard to a Cultural Arts Center in mid-May. Commission Member Moore, Liaison to the Parks and Recreation Commission, updated commission members on the Parks and Recreation Commission. VIII. DIRECTOR'S AND COMMISSION MEMBERS' CHOICE Director Black informed the Commission that the City of Englewood has a public/private partnership with Riverside Miniature Golf/Go Kart, located next to the Englewood Golf Course. Black stated that the owner has given notice to the City of Englewood that he will be selling the business. Black discussed the options available to the City including renegotiation of the contract with an interested • • ", • • buyer, or purchasing the business and redeveloping the land into open space in conjunction with the Platte River Open Space Plan . Black told the Commission that he would keep them apprised of the situation. Commission Member Moore announced that she would be having two pieces of art in a Juried Art Show in Boulder, April 18-28. City Council Member Wolosyn stated that the Back to Bach concert was a great success. Recreation Manager Hultberg spoke in regard to an article on the Walden Children's Theater, located at the Colorado Mills Mall at C470 and I 70. Youth Commission Member Burrage announced the Englewood High School Choir and Chamber Music Concert on Friday, April 5 at 7:00pm. Commission members were informed of upcoming concerts including the Strings for Spring concert on April 26 at the City Center Atrium at 7pm and the Chamber Quartet at the Malley Senior Recreation Center on April 28 at 4pm.
