CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION
Minutes of May 1, 2002
The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order
at 5:47pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the City Council Conference Room at the Civic Center
building.

REVIEW OF AGENDA
A revised agenda was distributed to commission members.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Chairperson Bertoluzzi asked if there were any corrections or changes to the minutes of
April 3, 2002. There were none. A motion was made to accept the minutes as presented.
The motion passed unanimously.
IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS

John Voboril from Community Development and Rodney Lontine from the Museum of Outdoor Arts
were introduced. Chairperson Bertoluzzi noted that Mr. Lontine was attending tonight's meeting in
place of Cynthia Madden Leitner and Amy Laugesen.
NEW BUSINESS
Chairperson Bertoluzzi reported that Ms. Laugesen was not able to attend tonight's meeting but had
asked him to inform the Commission that the Museum of Outdoor Arts will be doing a General Iron
Works show in which they would like to include the photos from the Commission's General Iron
Works Photo Project. Bertoluzzi told commission members that there would need to be a formal vote,
which could be done at next month's meeting . Bertoluzzi noted that Ms. Laugesen is planning on
attending next month to go into more detail regarding the show and request.
Discussion was turned over to Rodney Lontine with the Museum of Outdoor Arts. In regard to the
cultural space at the Civic Center building, Mr. Lontine told the Commission that the Museum is
moving forward with the budget on the project and that the only change from the original presentation,
if budget allows, is the reconfiguration of an electrical room to expose some glass brick.
Mr. Lon tine continued, informing the Commission that the Museum of Outdoor Arts received a
proposal regarding a piece of art that would be used as a cover for the amphitheater at the City Center •
site . Mr. Lontine described the art as not utilitarian but as a working piece of art that would still
provide some protection from weather. A biography of the artists was distributed along with two
designs options for the art. Discussion followed regarding history and experience of the artists.
Commission Member Moore asked if the Museum of Outdoor Arts is paying for the artwork . Mr.
Lontine replied no, that he is making the presentation for consideration of the 1 % public art fund.
Chairperson Bertoluzzi commented that the property is owned by Englewood Environmental
Foundation but is within the Museum of Outdoor Arts boundaries . In regard to the amphitheater
artwork, Bertoluzzi reported that it would be valuable to have a discussion with Public Works to
determine if they have any plans for a permanent structure . Bertoluzzi asked in regard to cost. Mr.
Lontine stated that cost ranges from $15,000 to $25,000, depending on the two designs. Discussion
followed regarding the Public Art Committee and a presentation. Director Black suggested a meeting
with Recreation Manager Hultberg, Bertoluzzi and himself to discuss the Public Art Committee before
making a decision on a presentation.
VI. OLD BUSINESS
Discussion moved to the Comprehensive Plan and the inclusion of a cultural component. John Voboril
with Community Development distributed goal and objective examples. Discussion ensued regarding
goals and objectives for the Cultural Arts Commission to be included in the Plan .
Director Black informed commission members of the Cultural Arts Commission presentation to City
Council on Monday, May 20 1h.
VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS
Due to the departure of Chairperson Bertoluzzi, Vice Chairperson Tomasso took over chairing the
meeting.
Commission Member Moore told the Commission that there was no new business in regard to the
Exploratory Committee besides what was previously discussed with Mr. Voboril.
In regard to the Parks and Recreation Commission, Moore told commission members that the
Department sponsored an Arbor Day celebration that included tree give-a-ways and the planting of
trees at three Englewood elementary schools. Moore reported that Lauri Dannemiller was present to
review the South Platte River Open Space Plan with the Commission .
Tomasso gave a brief update on the General Iron Works Photo Project, explaining that the printer has
been selected and that the photos should be ready by mid-May.
VIII. DIRECTOR'S AND COMMISSION MEMBERS' CHOICE
Director Black had no items for Director's Choice .
Vice Chairperson Tomasso announced of an upcoming show he is in at kw studio/gallery from May
10-June 2. Tomasso stated that he had attended a meeting for the Englewood Chamber Sidewalk Sale .
Commission Member Dulaney distributed invitations to the "Arts Alive Week" at Maddox Elementary
and The Best of Englewood Schools art show at the Archibold & Maxwell Gallery.
