CALL TO ORDER
City of Englewood
CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION
Minutes of June 7, 2006
The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order
at 5 :47pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the City Council Conference Room at the Civic Center.

REVIEW OF AGENDA
Bertoluzzi stated that Harold Stitt with Community Development would not be present to discuss the
Wal-Mart art wall; noting that Director Black would be reporting on it instead.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Chairperson Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes and/or corrections to the
minutes of May 3, 2006. Commission Member Bartunek noted a typo under discussion of
the Forgotten Past Sculpture. The minutes were approved as amended.
IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS
Rodney Lontine, Chief Operating Officer for the Museum of Outdoor Arts introduced Rachel Miller,
Executive Assistant for MOA. Lontine told the Commission that Ms. Miller will be replacing
Meredith Wortzel as the MOA representative.
V. NEW BUSINESS
Discussion was turned over to Black and the Wal-Mart art wall. Black informed the Commission that
Mr. Siler, artist of the art wall, has requested some updates to the art wall, including painting of the
yellow background. Black told the Commission that due to Wal-Mart considering a possible
expansion, the decision has been made to table any work to the art wall until Wal-Mart makes a
decision as to the expansion. Wolosyn asked ifthere has been discussion whether to move the art
wall. Wortzel reported that she had heard Wal-Mart is only looking at expanding the front of the store
so the art wall would not be affected. Discussion ensued .
VI. OLD BUSINESS
Recreation Manager Gary Hultberg distributed an attendance report for Hamdpen Hall showing 3000 •
people have attended events at the facility since its opening in March .

Black reported that David Taylor was unable to attend tonight's meeting but will be attending the July
meeting to discuss his contract with the City of Englewood and to answer any questions that the Board
may have. Black told commission members that a copy of the contract between David Taylor and the
City of Englewood will be included in the July packet for them to review prior to the meeting with Mr.
Taylor.
In regard to the Forgotten Past sculpture (aka Hammer and Nail), Black asked the Commission if they
had the opportunity to go look at it. Wolosyn asked if the new development plans would impact the
sculpture. Black explained that although he has not seen plans, a new development is planned for that
location . Commission Member Laugesen stated that The Center for Discovery Learning, who
designed the piece, no longer exists. Discussion followed in regard to leaving the sculpture as is until
it would need to be moved or it becomes an issue. The suggestion was made that it be donated to the
Clayton Elementary sculpture garden. Commission members decided to see if Clayton was interested
in the sculpture, and if not, an alternate plan would be considered.
Black informed the Commission that he has spoken with Mike Flaherty, Deputy City Manager, in
regard to last month's discussion on the need for more signage at City Center. Commission members
were told that Mr. Flaherty agreed to have a meeting with the Cultural Arts Commission, Englewood
Arts Board, Englewood Public Library and MOA, and will schedule it as soon as he gathers the
information. Wolosyn told the Commission that Harold Stitt has contacted her in regard to getting
brushed aluminum lettering for Hampden Hall to go above the entrance like MOA and the courts .
COMMITTEE REPORTS
In regard to maintenance of the sunflowers that had been purchased through the Art at the Shuttle
Stops program, Hultberg reported that the artist lives in Colorado Springs and he will be contacting
him to see ifhe would be interested in a maintenance contract. Hultberg explained to the Commission
that funding for the maintenance of art will always be available due to the Commission's Art in Public
Places guidelines that requires twenty-five percent of all art in public places purchases be set aside for
maintenance. Laugesen suggested the City ask artists to write a maintenance log on their art so if they
are not available to maintain the artwork, information will be available in regard to paints used,
cleaning it, etc .
Bertoluzzi announced the hiring of a new Strings Attached instructor who will also be the
administrative coordinator. Bertoluzzi stated that the Englewood Arts 2005-2006 Concert Series
concluded with the Zephyr Duo concert on May 28 1h. Bertoluzzi thanked Parks and Recreation for the
partnership with Englewood Arts for the concert series.
Moore gave an update on the Parks and Recreation Commission, reporting that the May meeting was
held in Hampden Hall. Moore reported that the Parks and Recreation Commission gave its approval
for two students from Colorado's Finest Alternative High school to paint murals on the large skate
ramp at the Cushing Skate Park. Discussion followed in regard to the formal dog park at the
Belleview nature area.
VIII. UPCOMING EVENTS
Discussion followed on the 2006 Sounds of Summer concert series that will begin on June 22nd at 7pm.
Hultberg explained that the Department was able to get sponsors for six of the eight concerts, and the

remaining two concerts were offered to the Cultural Arts Commission and Parks and Recreation
Commission which Bertoluzzi accepted on behalf of the Cultural Arts Commission. Hultberg
reported that the Kidstage Family Nights will be on Tuesday evenings at 7pm beginning July 11th .
DIRECTOR'S CHOICE
Black reported that he will not be at the July meeting.
X. COMMISSION MEMBERS' CHOICE

Moore spoke in regard to a plan to keep art in Hampden Hall at all times. Lontine noted that MOA
plans to provide art for Hampden Hall when empty. Moore stated that she appreciates MOA's offer
but prefers to have other means. Discussion followed .
Moore stated that she is looking for suggestions in regard to jurors for the 2007 Juried Art Show.
Wolosyn thanked Wortzel for all of the work and time she has given. Wolosyn welcomed Miller to
the Cultural Arts Commission.
Miller announced Politics of Power: Art and Images of the China Revolution will be coming down.
Miller noted that the next show will be a permanent collection of MOA.
Bertoluzzi read a tribute to Wortzel.
