IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS
v.
Amber Waits with Alexan City Center and LeighAnn Hoffhines with the City of Englewood were
introduced.
NEW BUSINESS
Bertoluzzi turned discussion over to Ms. Waits, property manager for Alexan City Center. Ms. Waits
told the Commission that Alexan City Center, located to the north of the civic center building, has an
interior walkway that encompasses a very large, stark wall measuring almost nineteen feet in height.
Waits explained that Alexan, with the help of Redstone Residential Group, the management company,
has decided to have four murals painted on the wall. Ms. Waits went on to explain that Alexan will be
working with students from a local college art department and will be offering scholarships for first
through fourth place. Discussion followed regarding the selection process and timeline for the project,
in addition to the exposure gained for both Alexan and the City of Englewood. Ms. Waits stated that
the only thing Alexan is having trouble with is coming up with a theme for the murals which she
hoped the Cultural Arts Commission could help with. Moore asked as to the length of the wall. Waits
replied that she is not sure but that it is quite substantial and long enough that there would be wall
space between each mural. Waits reported that Alexan plans to keep the murals on the wall for two to
three years and then offer the program again with a new theme. Director Black asked Ms. Waits how
soon she would like the suggestions for a theme . Waits replied that it is their intention to get
information to the campus by the first of the year for painting to begin in the spring. Waits was told •
that the Commission would use the next month to discuss a theme and then follow-up with her.
Discussion followed regarding the advertising of City Center events in the Alexan newsletter and on
their bulletin boards. Ms. Waits thanked the Commission and left.
Bertoluzzi turned discussion over to LeighAnn Hoffhines and judging of artwork for the 2007
Englewood Calendar. Hoffhines told the Commission that on Monday, the top fifty pieces were
selected which are on display for tonight's judging. Hoffhines reported that 134 entries were received
this year, almost twice as many as last year. Hoffhines discussed the judging process. Judging of the
artwork followed.
VI. OLD BUSINESS
While Hoffhines tabulated scores from the judging, Bertoluzzi proceeded with the meeting. In regard
to Hampden Hall signage, Black informed the Commission that per interest from the Commission,
Assistant City Manager Michael Flaherty has researched the cost for smaller scale brushed aluminum
lettering with a wood panel and has determined it would cost approximately $4,600; $4,000 for the
maple panel and $600 for the lettering. Bertoluzzi asked Black ifhe would invite Mr. Flaherty to the
November commission meeting to discuss the signage in more detail.
VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS
Commission Member Schnitzer gave an update on Art at the Shuttle Stops, reporting that a Call for
Entries will be going out in a couple of months and signage will soon be installed at each shuttle stop •
that will include a statement from the artist. Schnitzer informed the Commission that the grant that has
been funding the art shuttle will soon run out so the City has been in discussion with RTD on how to
continue to run it at a discounted fee. Discussion followed in regard to suggestions for improvements
to Artabout Englewood. Commission Member Bartunek distributed a breakdown of Artabout
Englewood expenses, showing $1,471.29 had been expended for the event and split 50/50 between
Community Development and the Cultural Arts Commission. Schnitzer distributed a photo of a bus
stop bench that had been decorated by students of Commission Member Dulaney.
Schnitzer asked how much money was in the Cultural Arts Commission's budget. Black replied that
there is approximately $1,100 to $1,300 in the Commission's budget and approximately $28,000 in the
Public Art Fund. Schnitzer asked if the breakdown of the budget could be provided at the next
meeting. Black replied yes, noting that he would also have Recreation Manager Hultberg put together
information on the Public Art Fund and the ordinance.
Wolosyn announced the next Englewood Arts concert "Autumn Winds" would be Saturday, October
23th at 2pm.
Moore reported that at the last Parks and Recreation Commission meeting, the family of Seth Hunter
Payne was present to present a check to the Parks and Recreation youth scholarship fund. Moore
explained that Seth was a part-time employee of the Department of Parks and Recreation, and was
tragically killed in 2005. Moore noted that the money donated came from Seth's memorial fund .
Moore announced that the Department was presented with the Governor's Summer Job Hunt award in
recognition of outstanding practices in the recruitment and training of the 2006 summer youth •
workforce; in addition to Pirates Cove also receiving the CPRA Columbine Award for Parks and
Recreation design. Bertoluzzi asked how Pirates Cove did this past year. Black stated that it started
out exceptional but then struggled due to numerous closures on weekends because of inclement
