CALL TO ORDER City of Englewood CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of March 1, 2006 The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5:45pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the City Council Conference Room at the Civic Center. Present: Absent: Also Present: Eric Bertoluzzi, Chairperson Janet Moore, Vice Chairperson Heather Bartunek, Commission Member Kate Dulaney, Commission Member Amy Laugesen, Commission Member Donna Schnitzer, Commission Member Maggie Stewart, Commission Member Mary Lynn Baird, Englewood Schools District Liaison (arrived at 6: 11 pm) Olga Wolosyn, City Council Liaison Michael Keene, Alternate Member Gary Hultberg, Recreation Manager II. REVIEW OF AGENDA III. e IV. There were no changes to the agenda. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairperson Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes to the minutes of February 1, 2006. There were none. The minutes were approved as presented. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS There were no guests. V. NEW BUSINESS There were no items for new business . VI. OLD BUSINESS City Council Liaison Wolosyn gave an update on Hampden Hall at Englewood Civic Center. Commission members were informed that City Council voted to approve the resolution naming the cultural space Hampden Hall at Englewood Civic Center. Wolosyn reported that meetings have been on-going for planning of the grand opening of Hamdpen Hall. Discussion followed in regard to events for the grand opening. Discussion turned to the proposed rental fee structure for Hamdpen Hall. Wolosyn reviewed the proposed fees and then discussed her concerns that the fees are too high due to Hampden Hall being a "bare-bones facility" with no lighting or backstage area. Wolosyn told the Commission that she had researched the rental fees of Swallow Hill and Lakewood Cultural Center. Discussion followed. Commission members concurred with Wolosyn in regard to the fees, saying that it would limit those who could afford to use the space. Wolosyn told the Commission that when City Council discusses the fees on Monday night, she would pass on the Cultural Arts Commission's concerns; reminding them that the intent of Hampden Hall was to be an affordable community theater. VII. Bertoluzzi informed the Commission that the Museum of Outdoor Arts has offered some paintings that will be hung in Hampden Hall during the grand opening, so that the walls will not be bare. COMMITTEE REPORTS Moore announced the National Juried Art Show will be opening April 15 \ with an opening reception from 6- 8pm. Discussion followed in regard to gallery sitting for the show. A schedule would be sent via e-mail to commission members. Moore noted that the invitations are being printed. In regard to Art at the Shuttle Stops, commission member Schnitzer reported that two artists want to remove their art. Schnitzer said that she was not sure as to the reason. Commission members discussed the fact that no art has been sold, possibly being due to the lack of information available to the public on the art and that it is for sale. The Commission was told that there is a meeting scheduled for tomorrow night that would include discussion on the art walk . Recreation Manager Hultberg gave an update on the Parks and Recreation Commission, reporting that items of discussion have included the dog park at the Belleview nature area and the Parks Master Plan. Hultberg was asked in regard to the dog park. Hultberg explained that the site has been graded and that the next step will be fencing . Hultberg explained that it will be seeded with native seed . VIII. UPCOMING EVENTS IX. The Commission discussed upcoming events including the Hampden Hall Grand Opening on March 18th and 19th, the Back to Bach concert which will follow the Hampden Hall Grand Opening and three free concerts on the 19th. Bertoluzzi announced an Up Close and Musical concert "Musical Fairy Tales" at Bishop Elementary School next Wednesday. DIRECTOR'S CHOICE Hultberg announced the annual Parks and Recreation's Night of the Stars Talent Show on Friday, March 24th , 7-9pm in Hampden Hall. X. COMMISSION MEMBERS' CHOICE Commission Member Dulaney inv ited commission members to "Musical Fairy Tales" at Bishop Elementary next Wednesday in addition to the Englewood District Art Show reception on March 9th from 4 :30-6 :30pm in the Englewood Public Library. Commission Member Laugesen thanked everyone for helping and attending with last month's reception with the Denver Commission of Cultural Affairs. Laugesen noted that fifty pieces of art from the Scholastics Art and Writing Awards have been placed in the main terminal at DIA. Laugesen told the Commission that they are still looking for a home for the show . In regard to Hampden Hall, Moore discussed her desire to perpetually have art on the walls and asked commission members to give it some thought as to how they would want to approach it. Wolosyn informed the Commission that at the last Englewood Arts meeting, City Council Member Ray Tomasso had a request for a studio art walk. Discussion followed in regard to tying it in with the art walk . The item would be added to the April agenda for discussion. XI. Bertoluzzi discussed a recent phone call that he had received from a lady who has a large doll collection that she would like to display. Discussion followed. The Englewood Public Library or Malley Senior Recreation Center were suggested as possible locations to display her collection. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 6:45pm.
