CALL TO ORDER City of Englewood CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of April 5, 2006 The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5:45pm by Vice Chairperson Moore at the City Council Conference Room at the Civic Center. Present: Absent: Also Present: Janet Moore, Vice Chairperson Heather Bartunek, Commission Member Kate Dulaney, Commission Member Donna Schnitzer, Commission Member Olga Wolosyn , City Council Liaison Eric Bertoluzzi, Chairperson Amy Laugesen, Commission Member Maggie Stewart, Commission Member Mary Lynn Baird, Englewood Schools District Liaison Michael Keene, Alternate Member Gary Hultberg, Recreation Manager Meredith Wortzel, MOA Representative REVIEW OF AGENDA City Council Liaison Wolosyn added to Public Art discussion pertaining to the purchase of a piece of art from the art at the shuttle stops project. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Vice Chairperson Moore asked if there were any changes to the minutes of March 1, 2006. There were none. The minutes were approved as presented. IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS There were no guests. V. NEW BUSINESS VI. Wolosyn explained to the Commission that City Council Member Ray Tomasso has requested a home studio art walk and because an art walk has also been discussed for the art at the shuttle stops, the thought is to combine the two. MOA Representative Meredith Wortzel reported that there will be a MOA sponsored event featuring David Taylor, Up Close and Musical and Design and Build at Englewood City Center on Saturday, August 5th. Wortzel discussed plans to do the art walks with the performances and create a "big art day". Wortzel noted that the art shuttle does not run on Saturdays so Nancy Fenton in Community Development is going to check to see if there was a possibility to have the shuttle run for that day. OLD BUSINESS Discussion moved on to Hampden Hall . Commission members discussed recent events in the facility and the comments that have been received . Gary Hultberg noted that 120 people attended the Department of Parks and Recreation's talent show that was held at Hamdpen Hall on March 24th. Moore noted that the opening for the Juried Art Show was successful. Wolosyn reported that three pieces of art have been sold. Moore explained to the Commission that there will be six weeks when there will not be artwork in Hampden Hall and that she has some concerns for the bare walls . Moore went on to explain that MOA has offered art to hang in the space during that time. Moore asked the Commission if they wanted to take responsibility in finding art or take MOA up on their offer. Discussion followed. Wolosyn stated that she would like to explore more options . Hultberg sugge sted waiting to see how much the space is used and if there is a need. Hultberg spoke in regard to signage for Hampden Hall and suggested that public art funds could be used. Wolosyn noted that a permanent donors wall is also needed . Black stated that there may be requirements in the type of lettering that will be allowed for signage and that he would follow-up with Community Development to see what is required. Wolosyn stated that ifthere are requirements then they could be more artistic with the donors wall. VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS Commission Member Schnitzer gave an update on the Shuttle Art Committee, reporting that the Committee has decided to change their structure and become more formal. Schnitzer told the Commission that there has been discussion in using art to fill the windows of the empty buildings along Broadway, possibly involving the schools if interested . The Commission discussed the two pieces of art that are being removed by choice of the artists . Wolosyn explained to the Commission that at the onset of the project, the City committed to buying a piece of art from the collection. Wolosyn went on to explain that $10 ,000 had been allocated from the public art fund of which only $7 ,000 was used . Wolosyn asked how much money was in the public art fund. Black stated that he would verify but that he thought it was approximately $36,000. Wolosyn stated that she prefers purchases of artwork to be in a partnership and that she would have discussion with Community e Development to see if there is some interest in partnering with the Cultural Arts Commission. Wolosyn asked the Commission ifthere was any interest in purchasing a piece of art from the art at the shuttle stops. Wolosyn stated that ifthere was not , she would like the Board to pursue another project. Discussion followed. Commission members discussed the purchase of the sunflowers that are located in the Wal-Mart parking lot. Hultberg suggested that the sunflowers could be used as an entry port monument. Wolosyn responded that they would also look good in a park. Black told the Commission that through the parks master plan process, recommendations will be made in regard to locations for public art that could help determine a place for the sunflowers. Wolosyn noted that the sunflowers are $2,500 each. A motion was made by Commission Member Dulaney and seconded by Commission Member Bartunek that the Cultural Arts Commission pursues the purchase of three sunflowers from the art at the shuttle stops project at $2,500 each . Ayes: Nayes: Motion passed Bartunek, Dulaney, Moore, Schnitzer, Wolosyn None Black told the Commission that he would talk to Harold Stitt in Community Development in regard to the purchase of the sunflowers. Black noted that he would also follow-up with the balance of the public art fund . Commission members requested that agenda item Exploratory Committee be changed to Englewood Arts. Wolosyn reported that she will be meeting with Carol McGuigan to gather information on Hamdpen Hall for DR COG "blast facts" that should help in the marketing of the space . Moore gave a brief update on the Parks and Recreation Commission . Black explained that when the Parks and Recreation Commission was informed that the cultural space had been named Hampden Hall, the question was asked as to where the name Hampden came from . Black told the Commission that Commission Member Armstrong decided to do some research on the history of the name Hampden in which she discovered quite a bit of history that he thought they would be interested in learning. Black suggested that he invite Ms. Armstrong to a Cultural Arts Commission meeting to discuss her findings . Commission members concurred . VIII. UPCOMING EVENTS Moore discussed upcoming events including Englewood Arts' Musical Fairy Tales on April 22nd and Cellos and Friends on May 13 1h . Hultberg announced the Englewood Art Exhibit featuring local artists that will be held at Hampden Hall May 16-25. IX. DIRECTOR'S CHOICE Black told the Commission of a gentleman who attended the most recent parks community forum at Hampden Hall and his long discussion he had with Dave Henderson from Public Works in regard to acquiring used lighting, etc . from the Denver Center of Performing Arts when they buy new equipment. Black used it as an example of how the community is taking ownership of the new facility. X. COMMISSION MEMBERS' CHOICE Commission Member Dulaney was congratulated on the recent Englewood School District Art Show. Wolosyn distributed Call for Entry information for the City of Greenwood Village's Colorado Art Show. Wortzel announced the opening ofMOA's Politics of Power: Art and Images of the China Revolution.
