CALL TO ORDER City of Englewood CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of May 7, 2003 The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5:50pm by Vice Chairperson Tomasso at the City Council Conference Room at the Civic Center building. Present: Absent: Also Present: Ray Tomasso, Vice Chairperson Kate Dulaney, Commission Member (arrived at 5:55pm) Darrell Freeland, Commission Member Janet Moore, Commission Member Donna Schnitzer, Commission Member Olga Wolosyn, City Council Liaison Eric Bertoluzzi, Chairperson Maggie Stewart, Commission Member Mary Lynn Baird, Englewood School District Liaison Jerrell Black, ex officio Gary Hultberg, Manager of Recreation Cynthia Madden-Leitner, President and Executive Director for the Museum of Outdoor Arts (left at 6:07pm) REVIEW OF AGENDA There were no changes to the agenda. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Vice Chairperson Tomasso asked if there were any changes or additions to the minutes of April 2, 2003. There were none. The minutes were approved as presented. IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS Cynthia Madden-Leitner with the Museum of Outdoor Arts was introduced. V. NEW BUSINESS Ms. Leitner discussed how collaboration among the Museum of Outdoor Arts, Parks and Recreation, David Taylor, Cultural Council and Up Close and Musical is proving the need for a cultural center, primarily through performances. Commission members were told that MOA is now pursuing collaboration with Englewood Schools that would play upon the uniqueness and close proximity of the aforementioned entities. Ms. Leitner discussed a one-day event that would focus on a grade level, centered around a subject the children are studying. Ms. Leitner gave the example of weather and explained how it would tie in with art, music, dance, etc. Ms. Leitner stated that teachers would be pulled in to help design and plan the event. The Commission was told that MOA is not looking for funding from the City, rather just making it aware of its plans . Commission Member Moore asked Ms. Leitner if plans have been discussed with the School Board. Ms. Leitner stated that plans have been discussed with teachers but that she would like to have funding I '· and support in place prior to speaking to the School Board. Ms. Leitner spoke in regard to how this intensifies the need for full-time art and music teachers in the schools . With Ms . Leitner present, discussion moved on to the round-a-bout piece. City Council Liaison Wolosyn stated that the item is on Monday night 's City Council study session for discussion. Ms. Madden-Leitner told the Commission that she was contacted by Sunset magazine in regard to their art collection. When asked about any new pieces, Ms. Leitner informed them of the John Henry piece in which they were interested in doing a story on it. Discussion followed regarding tagging of artwork at City Center. Ms . Leitner thanked the Commission for their time and left. Discussion moved on to Budget. City Council Liaison Wolosyn informed the Commission that the City Council budget retreat was held last Monday to discuss the budget shortfall due to declining sales tax. Wolosyn reported that at this point there is no new information but that Director Black would keep them apprised of any new budget situation. Commission Member Moore discussed the Englewood Cultural Arts Center Association's booth for the Englewood Jubilee II celebration on Saturday, May 10th. Recreation Manager Hultberg reported that Parks and Recreation would have a table with bond project information and that the Englewood Youth Council would also be having a booth with Spin Art. Vice Chairperson Tomasso added that Englewood Historical Society would also be having a booth. VI. OLD BUSINESS Discussion followed in regard to the recognition gift. VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS There were no further items to discuss in regard to the round-a-bout art piece. City Council Liaison Wolosyn had no new information on the Exploratory Committee. Commission Member Moore updated the Commission on the March Parks and Recreation Commission meeting. VIII. DIRECTOR'S AND COMMISSION MEMBERS' CHOICE Vice Chairperson Tomasso announced that Westword is dropping its listing for art openings. Discussion followed. Commission Member Moore discussed upcoming events. Commission Member Dulaney extended an invitation to commission members to the Maddox Arts Alive Week, May 13-16. VIII.
