CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION
Minutes of October 1, 2003
The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at
5:45pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the City Council Conference Room at the Civic Center building.

II. REVIEW OF AGENDA
There were no changes to the agenda .
• III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Chairperson Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes or additions to the minutes of
September 3, 2003.
Bertoluzzi spoke in regard to whether the minutes needed to be in such detail. Director Black
commented that there is already quite a bit of information that is not included in the minutes but that the
minutes could be done with less detail if that is what the Commission requests. City Council Liaison
Wolosyn suggested that when there is discussion involving funding, recommendations, etc. more detail
be put in the minutes.
There were no changes or additions to the minutes. The minutes were approved as
presented.
IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS

LeighAnn Hoffhines, Communication Specialist for the City of Englewood, was introduced.
NEW BUSINESS
Discussion was turned over to Ms. Hoffhines and judging for the 2004 Student Art Calendar. Ms.
Hoffhines told the Commission that 149 entries were received and as discussed at the September
meeting, a group of representatives from the Commission and MOA had met on Monday to select the
fifty finalists. Ms. Hoffhines explained the judging process. Judging proceeded.
Following judging of the artwork, Wolosyn informed the Commission that as in the past years, the
Cultural Arts Commission will have an entry in the 2003 Englewood Holiday Parade. Wolosyn stated
that the theme for this year's parade is "Englewood Jubilee II 1903-2003 Old Century Charm, New •
Century Vision." Discussion followed regarding ideas for the parade entry .
Director Black informed the Commission that Commission Member Moore's term expired as Liaison to
the Parks and Recreation Commission . Black reported that either Moore needed to be reappointed or a
new liaison needed to be appointed. It was decided that Commission Member Moore would continue
serving as Liaison to the Parks and Recreation Commission.

There were no items for Old Business.
VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS
Wolosyn stated that Cynthia Madden-Leitner with the Museum of Outdoor Arts has offered to the City
of Englewood/Cultural Arts Commission, a long-term loan of a piece of art for the roundabout.
Wolosyn explained that it was agreed that the piece would not be placed at the roundabout until mid-
November or later. A letter from the Cultural Arts Commission is in process agreeing to the terms for
the loan of the art piece including participating in the cost of moving and installation, estimated to be in
the range of$500 to $1 ,000 . Wolosyn commented in regards to the e-mail from Public Works Director
Ken Ross and Traffic Engineer Ladd Vostry and their feeling that the piece is an excellent choice for the
site .
Discussion moved on to the sculpture for the Pirates Cove Aquatic Facility. Wolosyn announced that it •
was unanimously agreed to fund a portion of the purchase from the Public Art Fund. Wolosyn stated
that the need for a more "expressive pedestal" was discussed and asked that staff pass on the request to
the artist. Hultberg told the Commission that he was able to negotiate for a better discount on the
sculpture, ten percent rather than eight.
There were no items for discussion for the Exploratory Committee.
Commission Member Moore gave an update in regard to the Parks and Recreation Commission.
VIII. DIRECTOR'S AND COMMISSION MEMBERS' CHOICE
Director Black gave an update on the City Budget Workshop held on Saturday, September 25th. Black
explained that sales tax revenue has increased over the last three out of four months and that projected
revenue for year-end is expected to be higher than originally expected projected. Black went on to
explain that with the new figures, City Council authorized restoring several City positions . Discussion
followed regarding those positions that were reinstated including the Youth Sports Program
Administrator position for Parks and Recreation. Black spoke in regard to the occupation head tax and
mil levy for the November ballot and the possibility for additional revenue. Discussion ensued .
Commission Member Moore asked in regard to any new information on the NAEA Convention.
Commission Member Schnitzer stated that a meeting has not taken place due to waiting to see if the
proposals submitted to NAEA will be accepted .
Commission Member Dulaney extended an invitation to the Maddox Elementary 50th Birthday •
Celebration and Reunion on Saturday, October 4th from lpm to 4pm.

Chairperson Bertoluzzi discussed the next meeting of ARK (Art Reaching Kids) and having a
representative from the Parks and Recreation Department attend. Bertoluzzi described the project as a
full-day program where students come to the CityCenter facility and experience art through activities
provided by MOA, David Taylor, the Englewood Public Library, etc.
Wolosyn announced that Pauletta Puncerelli, Public Information Officer for the City of Englewood
would be leaving the City to take on a position with RTD. Wolosyn invited commission members to her
going-away party on October 9th from 4-6pm.
Moore gave an update on the 2004 Juried Art Show. Moore commented in regard to the high level of
interest for this year's Strings Attached program.
Englewood School District Liaison Baird announced that Clayton Elementary is starting on their second
sculpture for the sculpture garden. Baird also announced that the School District is a finalist for U.S.
Department of Education grant to study the impact that integrating art education into elementary schools
and middle school curricula has on academic performance.
Vice Chairperson Tomasso announced an upcoming presentation through the Englewood Historical
Society in regard to the preservation of the Skerritt House.
Ms. Hoffhines returned with the selection of the thirteen pieces of student art for the 2004 Calendar.
Discussion ensued. Ms. Hoffhines announced that the Opening Reception would be Thursday, October
23rd from 5-6:30pm. As suggested at the last meeting, Ms. Hoffhines stated that the reception would be
more formal and include a presentation.
