CALL TO ORDER City of Englewood CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of November 5, 2003 The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5:45pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the City Council Conference Room at the Civic Center building. Present: Also Present: Eric Bertoluzzi, Chairperson Ray Tomasso , Vice Chairperson Kate Dulaney, Commission Member (arrived at 5:54pm) Darrell Freeland, Commission Member Janet Moore, Commission Member Donna Schnitzer, Commission Member Maggie Stewart, Commission Member Olga Wolosyn, City Council Liaison Mary Lynn Baird, Englewood School District Liaison Jerrell Black, ex officio Gary Hultberg, Recreation Manager Deeksha Nagar REVIEW OF AGENDA There were no changes to the agenda. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairperson Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes or additions to the minutes of October I, 2003. There were no changes or additions to the minutes. The minutes were approved as presented. IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS v. There were no guests. NEW BUSINESS Discussion began on the results of Tuesday's election. Director Black congratulated City Council Member Wolosyn on her being re-elected as the Council Member at Large representative, along with Michael Yurchick. Discussion followed regarding the race for District I where Vice Chairperson Tomasso and Jill Carlston are separated by five votes. Black explained to the Commission that there are some provisional and signature challenge ballots that need to be counted before a winner is determined. Black stated that the count would be final on Monday, November 17th. Black also informed the Commission that Laurett Barrentine was elected as Council representative for District III, replacing Julie Grazulis. Black reported that the head tax and mil levy were defeated but that an Arapahoe County Open Space Tax passed that will provide the City with approximately $650,000 a year to be used towards parks and open space projects. Black spoke in regard to how the department will be affected by the defeated head tax and mil levy. Chairperson Bertoluzzi announced upcoming concerts. VI. OLD BUSINESS Discussion followed regarding the 2003 Englewood Holiday Parade. City Council Liaison Wolosyn reported that due to budget cuts there would not be a parade in 2004. VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS Wolosyn continued, updating the Commission on the round-a-bout art piece. Wolosyn stated that she would speak to Cynthia Madden-Leitner to confirm when the piece can be moved. Vice Chairperson Tomasso suggested putting something in the paper informing the public that general fund money is not being used to fund the art. Recreation Manager Hultberg told the Commission that Commission Member Stewart and he had viewed the changes to the Pirate Cove sculpture and that both were very pleased. Hultberg described the new decorative pedestal for the sculpture. Photos of the updated sculpture were distributed. Wolosyn spoke in regard to the status of Chicken Lips coming into the CityCenter development. VIII. DIRECTOR'S AND COMMISSION MEMBERS' CHOICE Director Black gave an update on the October Parks and Recreation Commission meeting. Black spoke of three visitors who had concerns with the users of Cushing Park and enforcement of the park and its closing time . Wolosyn stated that when the gentleman spoke to City Council, he told them that a Safety Services employee said that more money was being spent on arts than Safety Services. Wolosyn reported that there is no new art dollars in the budget. Discussion followed regarding the perception by the public with all the new artwork being placed in the City during a low-budget time • and how to ease those rumors. Black invited commission members to stop by the Malley Senior Recreation Center to see the new sculpture in the entranceway. Black noted that the Malley Trust Fund funded the sculpture. Black announced the Malley Senior Center Grand Reopening on Friday, December 51h. Commission Member Schnitzer spoke of the 2004 Calendar Artist's Reception and how well done it was. Recreation Manager Hultberg announced that 2003 Malley Holiday Bazaar was a success. Hultberg explained that due to the addition of the gymnasium, Malley was able to host an additional thirty-six vendors. Commission Member Moore announced that the deadline for the Juried Art Show is November 15th. Chairperson Bertoluzzi discussed the Federal Grant received by the Englewood School District. Bertoluzzi explained that the school district was 14th out of 34 recipients that received funding. Bertoluzzi went on to explain that the School District received $818,000; of which would be used over the next three years to create a model program that integrates arts in the curriculum and strengthens academics. Bertoluzzi also informed the Commission that the Englewood Arts Association received a $5,000 • grant from Qwest for the Strings Attached program. • • • Englewood School District Liaison Baird announced that some artwork from her Clayton Elementary students was chosen for a backdrop to a John Sales movie Silver City . Deeksha Nagar introduced herself and told the Commission that she is a teacher in folklore. Ms. Nagar explained her use of folklore in the arts and gave suggestions of workshops, classes that she offers. VIII. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 6:31pm. J/Jtfw,jJJ_l a. ~ Deborah A.
