CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION
Minutes of December 3, 2003
• I. CALL TO ORDER

The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at
5:47pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the City Council Conference Room at the Civic Center building.

There were no changes to the agenda .
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Chairperson Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes or additions to the minutes of
November 5, 2003. Bertoluzzi stated that he had a change to Item VIII, paragraph seven,
last sentence. Bertoluzzi asked that it read " .... to create a model program that integrates
arts in the curriculum and strengthens academics". There were no other changes to the
minutes. The minutes were approved as amended.
IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS
City Council Liaison Wolosyn introduced Darren Hollingsworth, Business and Development Specialist
with Community Development and explained Darrin was present to give the commission an update on
the proposed Englewood Theater Development at the old Paper Warehouse site.
V. NEW BUSINESS
Wolosyn commented on the recent Englewood Herald articles regarding the project. Hollingsworth
explained that Bob Wells and his two business partners had just recently signed a lease agreement with
1st Industrial, the property owner. Hollingsworth reviewed his plans for a community theater that would
include four major components; 200 seat black box theater, classroom and art gallery. Darrin discussed
the possibility of a 250,000 low interest loan from the cultural center land bank to help fund
construction. The loan would be guaranteed and the City could receive use of the facility for
community events as part of the loan agreement. Discussion ensued .
Hollingsworth commented that the theater would bring many direct and indirect benefits to the City and
also meet part of the City's comprehensive plan goals related to cultural arts .

Director Black inquired about the timing of any commission or council action regarding the loan.
Wolosyn requested that the Commission provide a recommendation to Council on whether or not to
proceed . Commission agreed that there was value to bring this project to Englewood and would like to •
see Community Development pursue negotiations.
Bertoluzzi thanked Hollingsworth for coming to tonight's meeting.
VI. OLD BUSINESS
Bertoluzzi updated the Commission on the School District Art Grant.
Commissioners discussed the Art Education Conference slated for next year.
VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS
There was no new information on the round-a-bout sculpture. Wolosyn stated that she would meet with
Cynthia Madden-Leitner to discuss details .
Wolosyn commented on the on the Englewood Herald article on the Strings Attach program.
Black gave a bond project update. Black offered to arrange a Commission tour of the Pirate 's Cove
facility.
VIII. DIRECTOR'S AND COMMISSION MEMBERS' CHOICE
Black congratulated Vice Chairperson Tomasso on his election to City Council. Black announced that
Wolosyn will remain as Council Liaison to the Commission and that there will be an opening in January
to fill Tomasso 's position. Black noted that interviews to fill Board and Commission vacancies will be
held on January 1th.
Englewood School District Liaison Baird announced that her proposal was accepted to present at the
NAEA Conference.
Commission Member Stewart announced that she is showing this weekend at the Colorado Art Expo at
the Convention Center.
Wolosyn spoke of the Englewood Shines activities for Saturday and stated that she will be a vendor at
the Englewood Recreation Center Holiday Craft Fair this weekend.
Bertoluzzi announced that he has been asked to meet with Assistant City Manager Mike Flaherty and
Swedish Hospital regarding a Swedish Art Project. Bertoluzzi noted that the November 22 Chamber
Music series was cancelled due to weather.
Tomasso stated that his show at Zip Gallery will finish up this weekend.
Commission Member Schnitzer discussed her fifth and sixth grade art show at her school.
