CALL TO ORDER City of Englewood CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of July 6, 2005 The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5:45pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the City Council Conference Room at the Civic Center. Present: Absent: Also Present: Eric Bertoluzzi, Chairperson Janet Moore, Vice Chairperson Donna Schnitzer, Commission Member Heather Bartunek, Commission Member Olga Wolosyn, City Council Liaison Jerrell Black, ex officio Amy Laugesen, Commission Member Kate Dulaney, Commission Member Maggie Stewart, Commission Member Mary Lynn Baird, Englewood School District Liaison Michael Keene, Alternate Member Gary Hultberg, Recreation Manager Meredith Wortzel, Museum of Outdoor Arts Jerry Schell, MSI Theatre Productions (left at 6:05pm) Kathy Schell, MSI Theatre Productions (left at 6:05pm) e II. REVIEW OF AGENDA • There were no changes to the agenda. III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairperson Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes to the minutes of June 1, 2005. There were none. The minutes were approved as presented. IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS Chairperson Bertoluzzi introduced Jerry and Kathy Schell ofMSI Theatre Productions. V. NEW BUSINESS Jerry Schell told Commission that they had asked to attend the meeting to discuss their interest in the cultural space being developed in the Civic Center. Mr. Schell distributed a letter and a resume. Mr. Schell said that as the President ofMSI Theatre Productions, he has been producing and directing theatre throughout the Denver area for many years. He said that he envisions a community theatre utilizing the cultural space as an on-going program producing a couple of shows a year. Discussion included Schell's background and training, as well as set-up needs for a theatre. Jerrell Black added that the space is intended to accommodate multiple uses, and told Schell that many decisions remain to be finalized before the space is ready by the first of next year. Chairperson Bertoluzzi thanked Mr. and Mrs. Schell, who then left . Commission member Donna Schnitzer then began discussion of the Public Art Benches. Schnitzer expressed to Commission that with Community Development involving schools in designing bus benches for the Shuttle stops, she thought it might be a good idea to have benches to be painted at the Olde Tyme Fair. Janet Moore suggested Commission consider it. Eric Bertoluzzi asked if a proposal could be made in conjunction with the work Harold Stitt and Community Development is doing. • Recreation Manager Gary Hultberg offered to contact Harold Stitt. VI. OLD BUSINESS Jerrell Black briefed the Commission on the work being done on the cultural space, saying that the construction had encountered some issues with the heating/cooling system, etc., and that the dollar amount should be finalized by July 15. Black added that he would have more information for the Committee at the next meeting. Janet Moore expressed concerns she had with the sound panels planned for the walls, saying that the size of the panels would limit the number of pieces of art that could be hung on the walls. Black replied that although the panels were designed for sound, he would pass on Moore's concerns. Eric Bertoluzzi inquired as to whether there were any other major issues to address, and that it seemed like the process was taking a long time. Black said that the process was typical for this type of project, and that discussions will be needed to address some issues. VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS There was no update for the Public Art Committee or Englewood Arts. Janet Moore reported that the re-opening of the skate park was discussed at the last Parks and Recreation Commission meeting . Eric Bertoluzzi inquired as to the status of the dog park issue. Jerrell Black explained that the flood plain and water quality studies at Belleview Park should be available in a few weeks, after which time the decision will be made whether to build a dog park at that location. VIII. UPCOMING EVENTS Eric Bertoluzzi commented that last Thursday's Summer Concert, which was sponsored by the Cultural Arts Commission, was very good with over 300 people in attendance. Gary Hultberg explained that the sponsorships had been created to help defray costs for the concerts, and that hopefully next year each concert will be subsidized by sponsors. IX. DIRECTOR'S CHOICE Jerrell Black told Commission he had a received a call from a resident regarding MOA's educational programs for residents. Black said he had not yet talked with the lady but would find out what her concerns were. X. COMMISSION MEMBERS' CHOICE Heather Bartunek asked Commission members to share information with her on any activities they have going on and said that she was willing to volunteer when needed. She added that she is helping to plan an employee art show at her job for August 5 and would have more information at the next meeting. Janet Moore said that she would be traveling to New York soon and would be visiting a Maurice Sendak exhibition. Commission member Donna Schnitzer expressed concerns she felt about the presentation from the last meeting with Rodney Lontine . • • • Meredith Wortzel announced that MOA was presenting a lecture by the artist, Daniel Sprick, at 5:30 on July 12 in the Community Room. Wortzel also said Up Close and Musical would be presenting "Building a Stairway to Heaven" at 8pm on August 6 . Janet Moore asked if there were any other dates she should include for Englewood Arts website. Eric Bertoluzzi asked Commission members to consider running for the School Board. XI.
