CALL TO ORDER City of Englewood CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of September 7, 2005 The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5:45pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the City Council Conference Room at the Civic Center. Present: Absent: Also Present: Eric Bertoluzzi, Chairperson Janet Moore, Vice Chairperson Heather Bartunek, Commission Member Donna Schnitzer, Commission Member Mary Lynn Baird, Englewood School District Liaison (arrived at 6: 13pm) Olga Wolosyn, City Council Liaison Jerrell Black, ex officio · Amy Laugesen, Commission Member Maggie Stewart, Commission Member Kate Dulaney, Commission Member Michael Keene, Alternate Member Gary Hultberg, Recreation Manager Meredith Wortzel, Museum of Outdoor Arts II. REVIEW OF AGENDA There were no changes to the agenda. e III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairperson Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes to the minutes of August 3, 2005. There were none. The minutes were approved as presented. IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS There were no guests . V. NEW BUSINESS Wolosyn informed the Commission that Commission Member Laugesen's new job requires her to attend the Denver Cultural Arts Council meetings, which also meet the first Wednesday of every month. Wolosyn explained that Laugesen 's boss has suggested that she alternate every other month. Wolosyn's advised Laugesen to try the arrangement until January '06 to see if it would work. Commission agreed that Laugesen would not be marked as absent due to her attending the Denver Cultural Arts Council meetings, which could benefit the Cultural Arts Commission. Bertoluzzi congratulated the re-appointed commission members -Stewart, Schnitzer and Moore. Discussion moved on to the 2006 Student Art Calendar. Commission members were told that the judging for the calendar would take place at the October commission meeting with a selection for the 50 finalists on Monday, October 3rd at 1 :30pm. MOA would again be hosting the Top 50 Artist Reception on Thursday, October 27 1h. V. OLD BUSINESS Black gave an update on the cultural space. Black reported that a meeting would be held next week with sub-contractors to receive bids and information on the project. Black estimated that construction e could begin mid-October with an opening around March-April 2006. Black assured that the space would be available for the Juried Art Show that will open April 1, 2006. Bertoluzzi reported that a couple of meetings are scheduled this week with prospective donors. Bertoluzzi told the Commission that there is a firm commitment of at least $50,000 for the cultural space . Discussion followed . VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS Commission Member Schnitzer notified the Commission that Community Development has put out the 2°d Call for Entries for the Art at the Shuttle Stops. Schnitzer reported that a couple of entries have been received . Schnitzer noted that Harold Stitt spoke to the Englewood High School art teacher about doing a panel. Moore briefed the Commission on the 2006 Juried Art Show. Moore spoke in regard to the uncertainty of having a new venue and not knowing what space will be available for the show. Moore suggested having the Cultural Arts Commission do the judging for the Art Show since they would be somewhat familiar with the venue. Commission members agreed. Moore noted that the judging usually takes place the first week in December. Commission members were told that the show opens on April 1st and runs for five weeks . In regard to the Parks and Recreation Commission, Black reported that the Franklin Street property has sold for $390,000 and that the money from the sale will go into the Parks and Recreation Trust Fund. e Black informed the Commission that the two water studies for a dog park in the Belleview Park nature area have been completed. Black explained that one study was on the floodway and another study was to determine if there would be an impact to the water quality. Black went on to explain that the two consultants are preparing a presentation to City Council on September 191h. Black stated that Pirates Cove is now closed for the season. Moore asked how it did . Black replied that it was a very successful year and estimates are that it netted approximately $230,000 . Discussion followed regarding the one serious incident that happened at Pirates Cove for the season. VIII. UPCOMING EVENTS Bertoluzzi announced the concert, first in the Classical Concert Series, on October 2~0 d . IX. DIRECTOR'S CHOICE There were no items for Director's Choice. X. COMMISSION MEMBERS' CHOICE MOA representative, Meredith Wortzel, informed the Commission ofMOA's upcoming exhibition "Spiral Jetty". Wolosyn discussed the 2006 budget and the task of finding efficient ways to run the City. Schnitzer spoke in regard to the success of the Olde Tyme Fair and how great it was to see children participating in the arts. Hultberg thanked the Commission in partaking in the Olde Tyme Fair and distributed the most recent Englewood Herald that had an article on the event. Hultberg told the Commission that a ''wrap-up" meeting was held today to discuss changes for next year's Olde Tyme Fair; Hultberg asked for any suggestions in regard to changes that commission members might have. Englewood School District Liaison Baird distributed information on her upcoming art show at Mile High Coffee. XI. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 6:25pm. Deborah A.
