CALL TO ORDER City of Englewood CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of October 5, 2005 The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5:45pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the City Council Conference Room at the Civic Center. Present: Absent: Also Present: Eric Bertoluzzi, Chairperson Janet Moore, Vice Chairperson Heather Bartunek, Commission Member Kate Dulaney, Commission Member Donna Schnitzer, Commission Member Amy Laugesen, Commission Member (left at 6:47pm) Olga Wolosyn, City Council Liaison Jerrell Black, ex officio Mary Lynn Baird, Englewood School District Liaison Maggie Stewart, Commission Member Michael Keene, Alternate Member Meredith Wortzel, Museum of Outdoor Arts LeighAnn Hoffhines, City Manager's Office REVIEW OF AGENDA Wolosyn noted that she would be discussing the October 17th City Council Study Session under cultural space. III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairperson Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes to the minutes of September 7, 2005. There were none. The minutes were approved as presented. IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS LeighAnn Hoffhines, Communication Specialist for the City Manager's Office was introduced. Ms. Hoffhines was present for the selection of art for the 2006 Student Art Calendar. V. NEW BUSINESS Discussion was turned over to Ms. Hoffhines. Hoffhines thanked the Commission and told them that on Monday, fifty finalists were selected which are on display for tonight's judging. Commission members were informed that half the entries were received this year compared to last year. City Council Liaison Wolosyn commented that low volume of entries could be due to the changes with art · teachers in the district. Hoffhines reviewed the judging process with the Commission. Commission members were informed that the Top 50 Artist Reception would be held on Thursday, October 27th from 5:00-6:30pm. Hoffhines thanked MOA for hosting the reception and helping with hanging of the artwork. Judging of the student calendar artwork followed. While Hoffhines tabulated scores from the judging, Bertoluzzi proceeded with the meeting. MOA Representative, Meredith WortZel informed the Commission that MOA received eleven murals from the Autry National Center in 2004. Wortzel explained that the 4' x 8' murals represent eleven women A who have contributed to the history of Colorado and each panel commemorates a different part of the W state's past and present. Wortzel went on to explain that the paintings were originally produced by the Women of the West Museum for a site in LoDo in January 2000 and were installed along a 250-foot construction barricade at 16 Market Street. In 2002, the Women of the West Museum merged with the Autry National Center based in Los Angeles . Through the suggestion of the artists, the murals were donated to the Museum so they could remain in Colorado. The murals will be installed October 2005 in the Civic Center parking lot on the wall between the lower and upper levels . Discussion followed regarding signage for the murals. VI. OLD BUSINESS In regard to the cultural space, Black announced that bids close Friday. Black reported that staff will be reviewing the bids the middle of next week and construction should begin within the next few weeks. Bertoluzzi reported that there will be a meeting on Monday with Bruce McDonald, owner of McDonald Hardwood Floors, in regard to flooring for the stage in the cultural space. Bertoluzzi stated that McDonald Hardwood Floors has already donated $10,000 to the cultural space and what they offer on Monday would be an in-kind donation and separate from the $10 ,000 . Bertoluzzi went on to report that they are a few hundred dollars away from $75 ,000 for donations for the cultural space . Bertoluzzi explained that $50 ,000 has been received from the Schram Foundation , $10,000 from McDonald Hardwood Flooring, $10 ,000 from Betty Robertson, an Englewood resident , $2,500 from Up Close and Musical, $1,000 from Jeff Shoemaker and over $1 ,000 from Englewood e Arts trustees. Wolosyn stated that a check will be presented to City Council on October l 71h ..• , Wolosyn noted that also on the 17 1 \ City Council will be voting on the cultural space agreement that will address users of the space and priority. Wolosyn explained that users in order of priority are the City of Englewood , Englewood Arts and MOA. Commission members were encouraged to attend the Study Session . VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS Commission Member Schnitzer gave an update on the Art at the Shuttle Stops and the Call for Entries. Schnitzer reported that four entries were received; three of which have been accepted and one that is contingent upon some changes . Wortzel stated that Fenton wanted to know if the Cultural Arts Commission is still interested in doing a piece for a shuttle stop. Commission Member Laugesen stated that she would check with Commission Member Stewart. Schnitzer reported that the bus bench that was painted at the Olde Tyme Fair is at Girard and Lincoln. Schnitzer noted that the other panel may be painted by Maddox Elementary. Vice Chairperson Moore informed the Commission that Englewood Arts will be having a table at the Holiday Bazaar at the Malley Senior Recreation Center. Moore asked for artwork from the members to sell at the Bazaar. In regard to the National Juried Art Show , Moore stated that she has mailed about 250 prospectuses and is hoping that others got the information from the website. Discussion followed regarding the cultural space not being ready by April 1, 2006 , for the opening of the Art Show . Black assured Moore that there should not be a problem with the space being done for the show . Discussion followed. Moore gave an update on the Parks and Recreation Commission, reporting that the Franklin Street property sold and the money from the sale will be going into the Parks and Recreation Trust Fund; of which the interest earned will be used for the scholarships for recreational programs. VIII. UPCOMING EVENTS Bertoluzzi reforted that the Englewood Arts brochure is being printed and that the first concert will be November 5 at 2pm. IX. DIRECTOR'S CHOICE Black gave an update on the Sheridan Redevelopment project. Black told the Commission that the City is moving forward with negotiations on the property lease agreement which will be presented before the new City Council-after November. Black explained that staff will be providing City Council with al the facts and background before they vote on the lease agreement. Black reported that Miller Weingarten is currently doing drilling for soil samples to get a better understanding on the landfill. X. COMMISSION MEMBERS' CHOICE Laugesen thanked the Commission for its flexibility in allowing her to split her time between the Cultural Arts Commission and the Denver Arts Council meetings . Laugesen reported that the Denver Arts Council is currently discussing making Colorado a film destination. Discussion followed . Wolosyn informed the Commission that Colorado 's Finest Alternative High School is interested in doing a mural at the skate park as a class project. Wolosyn suggested that it be presented to the Parks and Recreation Commission. Black discussed several murals in the parks system that have been done by the school district. ... Wolosyn thanked Black for his hard work on the cultural space. Wortzel announced that Spiral Jetty is open and will run through December 2"d. Wortzel discussed the upcoming Scholastic Art and Writing Awards and asked for volunteer judges. Ms. Hoffhines returned with results of the judging. XI.
