CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION
Minutes of August 4, 2004
The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order
at 5:45pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the City Council Conference Room at the Civic Center.

REVIEW OF AGENDA
City Council Liaison Wolosyn announced that she had asked Lauri Dannemiller to attend tonight 's
meeting to make a presentation on the Art at Shuttle Stations. Due to Ms. Langston also being present
to discuss the Swedish Shots for Tots project, Bertoluzzi moved Old Business to the beginning of the
agenda .
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Chairperson Bertoluzzi stated that the July minutes would be approved later in the meeting after Ms.
Dannemiller and Ms. Langston's presentations.
IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS

Chairperson Bertoluzzi welcomed new Commission Member Amy Laugesen.
OLD BUSINESS
Bertoluzzi turned discussion over to Ms . Dannemiller and Art at the Shuttle Stops. Dannemiller
informed the Commission that artwork has been selected for twelve of the nineteen shuttle stops.
Dannemiller explained the selection process then did a PowerPoint presentation showing the selected
pieces of art at their designated stops. Dannemiller discussed the $10,000 contribution from the
Cultural Arts Commission for the project and explained that due to savings on engineering reviews and
no need for pedestals, cost of the project came in at approximately $14,000 and not the $20,000 as
originally expected. Commission members were told that the shuttle has been named "art" and shown
a draft of the shuttle brochure that will also give detailed information on the pieces of art. Dannemiller
announced that the shuttle kick-off will be Friday, September 3rd.
Discussion moved on to the Dala Horse and the Swedish Shots for Tots project. Kimberly Langston
thanked the Commission for their participation in the project. Commission members were informed
that four Dala horses have been completed; pictures of the horses were shown. Discussion followed
regarding displaying of the horses, including at City of Englewood facilities. •
Mary Lynn Baird, Englewood Schools Liaison, did a PowerPoint presentation showing the Dala
Horses in addition to the Berlin Bears and Chicago Cows she saw on her recent travels.
Discussion ensued.
VI. NEW BUSINESS
Director Black announced that the 2005 Parks and Recreation budget has been submitted. Black stated
that included in the Parks and Recreation budget was funding for a partnership with the Cultural Arts
in addition to funding for the land bank. Black explained that funding was also included for
preliminary planning for the 2nd floor cultural space. Black went on to explain that the requests would
be discussed in more detail with City Council at the budget retreat the end of September. Wolosyn
asked if the requests were separate or grouped together. Black said that they were separate. Wolosyn
spoke in regard to expectations for the cultural space. Black responded that Public Works will be
included in the planning and that a range of scenarios for the space will be planned in order to fit
within the designated budget. Black told the Commission that he would keep them updated on the
2005 budget process.
Discussion followed regarding the meeting with City Council that has been scheduled for Monday,
September 13th at 6pm in the Community Room. Black encouraged commission members to attend.
VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS
There were no other items for discussion for Public Art.
There was no update for Exploratory Committee.
In regards to an update on the Parks and Recreation Commission, Black informed the Commission that
due to the appointment of Parks and Recreation Commission Member Jim Woodward to City Council,
the Commission would be looking for someone to fill his vacancy. Black reported that Pirates Cove
has been extremely successful for its first season. Discussion followed regarding the decision to close
Pirates Cove Monday through Friday beginning August 23rd until its last day on September 6th due to
losing the majority of staff from school starting.

Bertoluzzi announced the upcoming PEAK in the Park event on August 21 5
\ beginning at 2pm.
Events will include performances by Up Close & Musical, David Taylor and students from Englewood
Schools.
Discussion followed regarding the Old Tyme Fair on August 28th at Belleview Park from lOam to
7pm. Commission members discussed craft activities for the Englewood Arts craft booth.
Commission members were told that the Keep Englewood Beautiful Committee would be holding a
SK run prior to the Fair.
DIRECTOR'S CHOICE
Black asked in regard to the meeting with City Council on September 13th and what, if any,
information the Commission wants to present to City Council. Discussion followed regarding a year-
end report.

Black spoke in regard to the art he saw during his trip to Alaska .
COMMISSION MEMBERS' CHOICE
Wolosyn announced that David Taylor has vacated his space at City Center due to expenses. Wolosyn
explained that David Taylor owes the City of Englewood $124,000 and has come to an agreement in
order to pay back the debt that would include three major performances and three minor performances
per year for the City of Englewood. Baird asked how long it would take for him to pay back the City.
Wolosyn replied seven and a half years. Commission members were told that he would also continue
to be involved with PEAK. Discussion followed regarding the expense to the City from the vacant
space.
Wolosyn handed out a memorandum from LeighAnn Hoffhines in regard to the 2005 Student Art
Calendar. Ms. Hoffhines will be attending the Cultural Arts Commission meeting in September to
discuss the judging process while judging of the artwork will take place at the October meeting.
Vice Chairperson Moore distributed information on the 2005 Englewood Arts National Juried Art
Show. Moore noted that due to the Museum of Outdoor Arts being unavailable, the show would be
held in the City Center Atrium.
Recreation Manager, Gary Hultberg, went into more detail in regard to the Old Tyme Fair.
Commission members were told that there would be on-going entertainment, reduced rates for the
farm and train in addition to a chili cook-off .
Commission members were informed that the four Kidstage performances have finished, pulling in
1,700 attendees. In regard to the concert series, Hultberg stated that positive feedback has been
received in regard to it being moved to the City Center amphitheater.
Donna Sipes, Englewood resident, introduced herself. Ms. Sipes stated that her husband and she had
recently moved to Englewood and have an interest in the arts. Ms. Sipes said that she learned of the
Cultural Arts Commission from the City of Englewood website.
