CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION
Minutes of September 1, 2004
The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to
order at 5:46pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the City Council Conference Room at the Civic
Center building.

REVIEW OF AGENDA
There were no changes to the agenda .
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Chairperson Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes to the July 7, 2004 and August 4 , 2004
minutes. Bertoluzzi made a grammatical change to the minutes of August 4 , 2004. The July 7 ,
2004 minutes were approved as presented. The August 4, 2004 minutes were approved as
amended.
IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS
Meredith Wortzel, Program Manager for the Museum of Outdoor Arts, Ray Tomasso, Englewood
City Council Member and Selwyn Hewitt, Englewood citizen, were introduced.
V. NEW BUSINESS
VI.
City Council Liaison Wolosyn discussed the 2005 Student Art Calendar, rioting that selection of the
fifty finalists will be on Wednesday , September 29th at 1 pm with final judging at the October
Cultural Arts Commission meeting.
OLD BUSINESS
Discussion moved to the cultural space located on the second floor of the CityCenter building.
Bertoluzzi reported that a meeting was held on August 19th that was attended by himself, Director
Black, Rick Kahm and Dave Henderson from Public Works and Council Member Wolosyn where
budget and ideas for completing the 4,000 square foot space were discussed. Black noted that
Public Works would be reviewing the initial cost estimate to see where costs can be lowered.
Discussion followed. Moore asked in regard to a timeline. Black replied that the Public Works
will have the revised numbers by September 13th and if the request for funding of the space is
appropriated by City Council, the area could be completed within four months once construction •
begins.
Discussion turned to the 2005 City budget. Wolosyn reported that it is a tight budget. Vice
Chairperson Moore asked if there is a risk of things being cut from the budget. Black responded
yes, that the preliminary budget shows a shortfall in addition to two City Unions going to
arbitration, which could affect the budget even more depending on the outcomes. Discussion
followed.
Black announced that the meeting with City Council has been moved to September 20th at 6:00pm.
Wolosyn distributed an outline for the year-end report that will be presented to City Council at the
meeting. Review of the outline followed.
Bertoluzzi asked Ms. Wortzel to give an update on PEAK Week. Ms. Wortzel stated that the week
of training was a great success, allowing teachers and art specialists to learn more about what the
Museum of Outdoor Arts and David Taylor has to offer.
Bertoluzzi announced that the PEAK in the Park was also an enormous success, attended by
approximately 1,500 people. Discussion followed.
Commission members were reminded of the Art at the Shuttle kickoff event on Friday, September
3rd at 11 :30am.
VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS
There was no update on Public Art or Exploratory Committee.
Moore gave an update on the Funfest/Old Tyme Fair.
vm. OTHER BUSINESS
Commission Member Schnitzer discussed opportunities to expand the Dala Horse project in
schools.
IX. DIRECTOR'S CHOICE
Director Black spoke in regard to the Funfest/Old Tyme Fair, thanking the Commission for their
participation of the successful event.
IX. COMMISSION MEMBERS' CHOICE
Commission members spoke in regard to their upcoming shows and events.
Ms. Wortzel announced the opening reception for Martin Gray, "Sacred Sites" on October 15,
2004, 5:30pm at CityCenter Englewood. Ms. Wortzel noted that the reception would include a
lecture and slide show by Mr. Gray.
Bertoluzzi spoke in regard to the increase in energy and commitment by the Commission and the
community for the preservation of art in the community. Moore suggested a write-up in the
Denver and the West in regard to art in the City of Englewood. Discussion followed.
