The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5:45pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the City Council Conference Room at the Civic Center building. Present: Absent: Also Present: Eric Bertoluzzi, Chairperson Janet Moore, Vice Chairperson Kate Dulaney, Commission Member (arrived at 6:00pm) Arny Laugesen, Commission Member Donna Schnitzer, Commission Member Jerrell Black, ex officio Maggie Stewart, Commission Member Mary Lynn Baird, Commission Member Olga Wolosyn, City Council Liaison LeighAnn Hoffhines, Communications Specialist (left at 6 :45pm) Susan Keane, PEAK Coordinator (left at 6:45pm) Rodney Lontine , Museum of Outdoor Arts Chief Operating Officer (arrived at 5:55pm) REVIEW OF AGENDA There were no changes to the agenda. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairperson Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes to the minutes of September 1, 2004. There were none . The minutes were approved as presented. IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS LeighAnn Hoffhines, Communications Specialist for the City of Englewood, and Susan Keane, PEAK Coordinator, were introduced . V. NEW BUSINESS VI . Chairperson Bertoluzzi turned discussion over to Ms. Hoffhines who explained the judging process for tonight's selection of art for the 2005 Student Art Calendar. Ms. Hoffhines told the Commission that 140 entries were received, of which fifty finalists were selected for tonight's judging. Commission members were also told that most every school is represented in the fifty finalists. Commission members judged the artwork. OLD BUSINESS While Ms . Ho ffhines tabulated scores, Bertoluzzi began discussion on the CivicCenter cultural space. Director Black announced that City Council has given its approval for $325,000 for completion of the second floor cultural space. Black explained that City Council approved $225,000 to be used from the cultural arts land bank and the remaining $100,000 would come from a use tax from the Denver Seminary project. Black went on to explain that the City of Englewood expects to receive approximately $500,000 in use tax in 2005 from the Denver Seminary project of which the first $100,000 will go to completion of the space. Black noted that the $225,000 from the land bank is • already in the budget and that the $100,000 will come later. Mr. Lontine asked if the entire amount could be borrowed from the land bank and then paid back when the $100,000 is collected. Black replied that it would need to be brought up to City Council, noting that a recommendation would also need to be made by the Board. In regard to City Council approving funding for completion of the space, Black gave credit to Council Member Wolosyn and her commitment to the cultural arts. Bertoluzzi suggested the Board send a letter of thanks to City Council. Discussion turned to the 2005 budget. The Commission was informed that funding is still allocated in next year's parks and recreation budget for partnering with cultural arts for programming. Discussion followed regarding cuts that were made to the 2005 budget. VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS There was no update for Public Art or the Exploratory Committee. In regard to an update for the Parks and Recreation Commission, Black reported that the first season for Pirates Cove was extremely successful, netting approximately $260,000 . Commission members were told that City Council has implemented a fifty-cent per admission increase for 2005 to bring in an additional $50,000 for next year's budget. Ms. Hoffhines returned with results for the Student Art Calendar. Discussion followed. VIII. EVENTS Bertoluzzi announced the first concert in the Chamber Music Concert series on Saturday, October 30th at 2pm in the Englewood CivicCenter Atrium. IX. DIRECTOR'S CHOICE There were no items for Director's Choice . X. COMMISSION MEMBERS' CHOICE Mr. Lontine announced the opening reception for Martin Gray, "Sacred Sites" on October 15, 2004, 5:30pm at the Civic Center. Discussion followed regarding entertainment for the evening. Commission Member Schnitzer thanked Chairperson Bertoluzzi for speaking to City Council at the September 201h Study Session. Black spoke in regard to the importance of meeting with City Council once a year. Discussion followed regarding the upcoming Juried Art Show. XI.
