CALL TO ORDER City of Englewood CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of December 1, 2004 The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5:50pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the City Council Conference Room at the Civic Center. Present: Absent: Also Present: Eric Bertoluzzi, Chairperson Janet Moore, Vice Chairperson Maggie Stewart, Commission Member Kate Dulaney, Commission Member (arrived at 5:5 lpm) Donna Schnitzer, Commission Member Mary Lynn Baird, Commission Member (arrived at 5:55pm) Olga Wolosyn, City Council Liaison Jerrell Black, ex officio Amy Laugesen, Commission Member Gary Hultberg, Recreation Manager Meredith Wortzel, Museum of Outdoor Arts REVIEW OF AGENDA There were no changes to the agenda . APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairperson Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes to the minutes of November 3, 2004. There were none . The minutes were approved as presented. IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS There were no guests present. V. NEW BUSINESS VI. Commission Member Donna Schnitzer asked why the Horse sculpture at the King Soopers Shuttle Station was gone. Olga Wolosyn explained that because of children playing on the sculpture, it had been removed until Public Works installs a secure base for it. OLD BUSINESS Chairperson Bertoluzzi turned the discussion to progress on the cultural space. Jerrell Black said that Suzette Emerson had gathered information for the drawings and was putting together a concept for the space. Commission Member Stewart commented that she hoped the space could be utilized at all times of the day and evening, including teaching space. Black explained that because the space will be used by the City, Cultural Arts, Parks and Recreation and others, usage will have to be coordinated; and that noise, parking, and set-ups are all issues that will need to be discussed. Black added that the space should be ready for use by Fall of 2005 . VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS There was no update on Public Art. Vice Chairperson Janet Moore had no report from the Parks and • Recreation Commission meeting due to the holiday dinner at the Golf Course restaurant and a short agenda. Bertoluzzi asked about the upcoming Holiday Crafts Fair at the Recreation Center. Moore said that the Englewood Arts Association had secured a table at the Crafts Fair, and showed the Commission cards of watercolors and ink drawings she would have available. Moore added that Olga Wolosyn would have pottery at the Fair also. Olga Wolosyn noted that Donna Spitzer had donated many projects for the Arts Association. VIII. UPCOMING EVENTS Eric Bertoluzzi announced that the concert "A Baroque Christmas", was scheduled for December 22"d at the Civic Center. Recreation Manager Gary Hultberg showed a poster done by Denise White for the concert. Bertoluzzi said how much he appreciated Hultberg getting the poster made, and asked him to thank Denise for a beautiful job. Olga Wolosyn reminded everyone that the City's annual "Englewood Shines" celebration would be Saturday, December 4 at the Civic Center, with Santa arriving on the Light Rail at 3:28pm. Donna Schnitzer added that Leigh Ann Hoffhines with the City Manager's office hoped that Commission Members would decorate ornaments found in the latest Englewood Citizen to decorate the tree for the celebration. IX. DIRECTOR'S CHOICE Jerrell Black wished everyone a happy and safe holiday. Black then reflected on Eric Bertoluzzi's recent presentation to City Council, and said that the Commission should be proud of everything it has • accomplished in the last year. Black thanked everyone on behalf of the Parks and Recreation Department. X. COMMISSION MEMBERS' CHOICE Meredith Wortzel with the Museum of Outdoor Arts announced that MOA would be judging the Scholastic Arts and Writing Awards for grades 7-12 on December 11th. Wortzel added that the show opens December 27th. Maggie Stewart shared with Commission members that she had three art shows coming up. Stewart then asked about the status of the remaining shuttle sites. Olga Wolosyn said she would ask at the next meeting. Commission Member Mary Lynn Baird distributed flyers for 2 Wacky Chics handpainted furniture and Mudworks Pottery annual Holiday Studio sale December 4th. Gary Hultberg showed an article from the Denver Post about public art which included the piece "Laughing Escalator" done by Jim Green for the Colorado Convention Center. Janet Moore said that 160 artists had submitted entries for the Juried Art Show scheduled for December 17. Donna Schnitzer told Commission that she had seen the Egyptian exhibit at the Denver Museum of • Nature and Science and highly recommended everyone try to see it. • XI. • • Olga Wolosyn announced that she and Mary Lynn Baird had made another Dala horse for Swedish Hospital. Wolosyn extended her thanks to Denise White for her work on the Baroque Concert poster . Eric Bertoluzzi spoke about Englewood High School Principal Bob Barrows and his work to create a School of Arts at the High School. Bertoluzzi said Barrows had made huge progress towards the project, gathering the support of the Colorado Symphony, Colorado Ballet, and others. Bertloluzzi added that Barrows is finding funding for the project, which is expected to be hugely successful. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 6:25pm .
