City of Englewood
CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION
Minutes of January 7, 2004
Due to the absence of Chairperson Bertoluzzi and the vacancy of a Vice Chairperson, the regular
monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 5:50pm by
Director Black at the City Council Conference Room at the Civic Center building. Black told the
Commission that Tomasso would no longer be serving on the Cultural Arts Commission due to his
appointment to City Council. Black stated that elections for Vice Chairperson would take place after his
vacancy is filled .

• II. REVIEW OF AGENDA
There were no changes to the agenda.
III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Director Black asked if there were any changes or additions to the minutes of December 3,
2003. There were none. The minutes were approved as presented.
IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS
Director Black introduced Kimberly Langston and Sue Goodin with Swedish Medical Center who were
present to discuss the upcoming "Shots for Tots" project. It was decided to move ahead on the agenda
while Ms. Langston and Ms. Goodin finished preparing for their presentation.

City Council Liaison Wolosyn spoke of upcoming events including a concert on January 27 at
Englewood CityCenter and the Maddox Elementary Up Close and Musical Performance and Art Show
on February 11 1h. Commission Member Moore spoke of the znct Annual Juried Art Show that will begin
February z3rd .
OLD BUSINESS
Wolosyn informed the Commission that a report on the Englewood Theatre proposal would be
available at the February meeting.
Wolosyn reported that MOA's Design and Build proposal had been accepted for the NAEA Convention.
Wolosyn discussed collaborating with MOA in regards to the event and the opportunity to showcase
cultural arts in Englewood. Commission Member Dulaney noted that the Englewood Student Art Show
would also be on display in the Englewood Public Library during the time of the convention. •
Discussion returned to New Business. Director Black introduced Kimberly Langston, Public Relations
Manager for Swedish Medical Center and Kim Goodin. Discussion was turned over to Ms. Langston.
Ms. Langston announced that Swedish Medical Center will be celebrating their 1 OOth Anniversary in
March 2005 and as part of the celebration, Swedish is leading the charge to increase the rate of
immunized children in the community. Ms. Langston explained that in a recent study, Colorado was
ranked as having the worst performance for the number of children immunized. Commission members
were told that free community clinics will be offered but that in order to be successful in implementing
the clinics and on-going efforts, $150,000 is necessary. Ms. Langston went on to explain that a "Dala
Horse Community Art Project" is being planned to help raise the necessary funding. Discussion
followed regarding the different levels of sponsorship for the project. Commission members were told
that with eac h level, the sponsor would receive a dala horse, ranging from six inches to four feet to be
displayed throughout the community. Ms. Langston explained to the Commission that the
Corporate/Silver Level would consist of the four-foot Dala Horse, to be custom painted by an artist
chosen by the sponsor. Ms . Langston asked for assistance from the Cultural Arts Commission in
obtaining artist names that would be interested in participaing . Discussion followed regarding means to
acquire artist names for an index. Commission Member Stewart offered suggestions based on her
experience with the City of Chicago's "Cows on Parade" project. It was later determined that Stewart
would be a Cultural Arts Commission Liaison to the Dala Horse Community Art Project. Ms. Langston
and Ms. Goodin thanked the Commission for their suggestions and told the Commission that they would
keep them updated in regard to the project.
VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS
City Council Liaison Wolosyn briefed the Commission on the artwork for the round-a-bout. Black told
the Commission that a formal agreement is being drawn up which will be taken to City Council
tentatively on February 2"d.
Wolosyn gave an update on the Exploratory Committee and spoke in regard to the success of the
organization in developing a more visible community arts profile.
There was no update in regard to the Parks and Recreation ~ommission.
VIII. DIRECTOR'S AND COMMISSION MEMBERS' CHOICE
Director Black informed the Commission of the death of Caitlin Smith, granddaughter of Bill and Carol
Belt, long time Englewood residents and Englewood parks and recreation supporters. Black explained
that Carol served on the Parks and Recreation Commission and Englewood for Recreation committee
and that Bill is a former City of Englewood employee.
Commission Member Schnitzer told the Commission that she would be teaching an in-service training
on architecture for Jefferson County art teachers.
Wolosyn announced that the first ARK (Art Reaching Kids) program would take place next Tuesday
with students from St. Louis Catholic School.
Commission Member Dulaney told commission members that she would be sending invitations to them
for the Maddox Elementary musical performance and art show.

Commission Member Stewart told commission members that her "Mama's Belly" product has been
chosen as the symbol for the maternity wing at the University of Colorado Hospital, Fitzsimmons
Campus.
