CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION
Minutes of February 4, 2004
The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at
5:47pm by Chairperson Bertoluzzi at the City Council Conference Room at the Civic Center building.

II. REVIEW OF AGENDA
There were no changes to the agenda .
• III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Chairperson Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes or additions to the minutes of
January 7, 2004. There were none. The minutes were approved as presented.
IV. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS
Chairperson Bertoluzzi welcomed new Commission Member Debra Howard. Bertoluzzi introduced
Lauri Dannemiller, Senior Manager for Community Development. Kimberly Langston with Swedish
Medical Center would not be present.
V. NEW BUSINESS
Discussion was turned over to Lauri Dannemiller. Ms. Dannemiller introduced Bob Gnaegy with Tacito
Design. Ms. Dannemiller discussed plans for a RTD shuttle route in the City of Englewood that would
run from CityCenter Englewood to Swedish /Craig Medical Center. Dannemiller to ld the Commission
that plans include artwork to be placed at the eighteen shuttle stops. A map of the shuttle route in
addition to information on a similar program in Hampton, Virginia was distributed to commission
members . Dannemiller explained that there would be a Call for Entry with the agreement that the art
would be placed at the site for a minimum of one year with the intent to sale . Dannemiller went on to
explain that the project would be self-supporting with the City retaining 25% of the sale of the artwork,
the artist retaining 75 %. Discussion followed .
Bob Gnaegy spoke of his experience in working with the City of Englewood with the Entry Port
Monumentation and the opportunity for the City to extend its public art collection ; giving Englewood a
brand state-wide and nationally. Commission Member Howard asked how many buses there would be.
Ms. Dannemiller replied that there would be two buses in route at all times, a third bus as back up.
Howard commented that she would like to see more innovation of artwork than just at the shuttle stops.
Ms. Dannemiller explained that the project would be a three-year pilot program in conjunction with •
RTD. Dannemiller spoke in regard to limitations, including budget. Discussion followed.
VI.
Ms. Dannemiller told the Commission that tonight's discussion is based off of a conceptual plan, which
she hopes to receive an endorsement from the Cultural Arts Commission that can be take to City
Council. If given approval by City Council, Ms. Dannemiller reported that she would come back with
more detail. It was consensus of the Cultural Arts Commission for the placement of artwork along the
Englewood shuttle stops. Discussion followed regarding if permission was needed from MOA for the
placement of art at the shuttle stops .
Discussion moved on to election of vice-chairperson.
Chairperson Bertoluzzi entertained a motion for nominations for Vice Chairperson of the
Cultural Arts Commission. Chairperson Bertoluzzi nominated Janet Moore as Vice
Chairperson for the Cultural Arts Commission. There were no other nominations.
Bertoluzzi closed nominations. Moore accepted the nomination.
City Council Liaison Wolosyn announced upcoming events . Vice Chairperson Moore discussed the 2"d
Annual Englewood Arts National Juried Art Show scheduled for February 23 -March 31, 2004.
Wolosyn discussed the 2004 budget and money for a land bank. Discussion followed in regard to a
report in May or June to the new City Council members informing them of Cultural Arts Commission
projects. ·
OLD BUSINESS
Commission Member Stewart gave an update on the Shots for Tots project. Stewart discussed the need
for space for artists to paint the horses. Due to the short timeline, Stewart reported that there would not
be a Call for Entries.
A motion was made by Vice Chairperson Moore and seconded by Commission Member
Stewart that the Cultural Arts Commission purchase a Dala Horse for the Shots for Tots
with Public Art funds. The motion passed unanimously.
A letter would be sent to the Public Art Committee informing them of the decision. Discussion ensued.
Wolosyn spoke in regard to the NAEA Convention and Commission 's help with MOA's booth.
Commission Member Howard and Englewood School District Liaison Baird spoke in regard to the
booths that they will also be having at the Convention.
VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS
Wolosyn announced the placement of the artwork at the round a bout. Commission members were told
that the cost for transporting and installing the artwork would be in the range of $1,000 to $2,000.
Director Black spoke in regard to the inadequate lighting at the round a bout and informed the
Commission that the City has brought in an electrician to improve the lighting. Wolosyn added that
City Council has approved the contract.
Bertoluzzi gave an update on the Progressive Education in Arts and Academics for Kids and ARK
programs.

Moore reported on the January Parks and Recreation Commission meeting. Moore informed the
Commission of the bronze sculpture that will be placed at the Pirate Cove Family Aquatic Center .
VIII. DIRECTOR'S AND COMMISSION MEMBERS' CHOICE
Director Black distributed articles from the February 2004 Colorado Municipalities League magazine in
regard to Colorado cities capitalizing on the arts .
Discussion followed regarding City Council's request for a more detailed attendance records for Boards
and Commissions . Commission members were told that attendance reports would now include excused
absences, unexcused absences and late arrivals. Wolosyn spoke in regard to the new policy.
In regard to the upcoming NAEA Convention, Baird announced that the Englewood School District Art
Show has been moved to April in order to coincide with the Convention . Baird explained that
Englewood High School will not be participating in the show due to there being several other shows at
the same time. Baird announced the Clayton Elementary Arts Alive Week, May 3-7.
Howard showed examples of her work to the Commission, noting that she will be working with MOA
on a project in the near future.
VIII. ADJOURNMENT
The meeting was adjourned at 7 :04pm .
