CALL TO ORDER City of Englewood PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION Minutes of June 12, 2008 The regular monthly meeting of the Englewood Parks and Recreation Commission was called to order at 5:30pm by Chairperson Gomes at the Englewood Recreation Center, 1155 W. Oxford Avenue. Present: Austin Gomes, Chairperson Mitch Waldman, Vice Chairperson Karen Miller, Commission Member Bob McCaslin, City Council Liaison Jim Woodward, Commission Member Krista Niederjohn, Youth Commission Member Rebecca Laughlin, Youth Commission Member Donna Schnitzer, Cultural Arts Commission Liaison Absent: Carolyn Armstrong, Commission Member Douglas Garrett, Commission Member Also Present: Bob Spada, Golf Operations Manager Gary Hultberg, Recreation Manager APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairperson Gomes asked if there were any changes or corrections to the minutes of May 8, 2008. There were none. The minutes were approved as presented. SCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMENT There was no one present for scheduled comment. IV. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMENT There was no one present for unscheduled comment. V. SHOW \V AGON USAGE VI. Gomes informed commission members that discussion on show wagon usage would be postponed to the July meeting due to Commission Member Garrett not being able to attend tonight's meeting noting that Garrett had requested discussion on the usage of the show wagon. BROKEN TEE UPDATE Discussion began with an update on Broken Tee Englewood. Golf Operations Manager Bob Spada reported that all of the tee rocks have been installed and staff continues to seed and top dress the course . In regard to the when the course will open, Spada stated that a decision has not been made but that staff is trying to have it open before the 4111 of July. Spada explained that a meeting is scheduled for tomorrow and if issues can be rectified with the developer and contractor, then it is hopeful the course will open sooner. Spada stated that hours for the driving range have increased and will now be open on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from sunrise to sunset, staying closed til noon on Thursdays and closed entirely on Mondays . Spada reported that beginning July 11th, the range will be open to more hours and lights in addition to no mats . Spada informed the Commission that the landscaping for Impact will be done next week. Vice Chairperson Waldman asked if vertical yard markers will be put up. Spada replied yes, that staff is planning on doing the same with the yard markers on Broken Tee that was one with the Englewood Golf Course. Commission members were told that CGA and CWGA were out today on the course to rate it. Spada noted that he should know of the rating sometime next week . Discussion followed in regard to the process and factors involved in rating a course. VI. CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION UPDATE Cultural Arts Commission Liaison Schnitzer gave an update on the Cultural Arts Commission. Schnitzer reported that the Cultural Arts Commission is discussing the possibility of displaying their artwork in Hampden Hall as a way to bring some art into the facility and also to introduce themselves to the community. Schnitzer explained that commission members will be meeting with City staff to discuss it further. Schnitzer told the Commission that the Cultural Arts Commission will be meeting with City Council on Monday, July 14th to give City Council an update on what the Commission has been working on. Schnitzer distributed Englewood Arts' promotional packet for its Cultural Arts Center financial campaign. Schnitzer informed the Commission that BID (Business Impro vement District) has asked the Cultural Arts Commission to put together a presentation for artwork on Broadway. Schnitzer also reported that the Cultural Arts Commission is discussing ideas for its booth at Funfest. VII. DIRECTOR'S CHOICE Hultberg reported that the Parks and Recreation Amateur Art Show held May 13-17th was very successful and has now become an annual event. Hultberg reported that the show brought in 55 artists , 89 pieces of artwork, 120 attendees at the artist reception and 260 visitors to the art show. Hultberg distributed fliers and posters for the 2008 Sounds of Summer Concerts and KidStage performances in addition to a flier on Belleview Park. Hultberg announced that for the 3rd year in a row, readers of Kids' Pa ges Family Magazine have voted Pirates Cove the Best Water Park for Families and Belleview Park the Best Neighborhood Park for Families . Commission Member Woodward also noted that the Department of Parks and Recreation has received several aquatics awards. VIII. COMMISSION MEMBER'S CHOICE Woodward announced that City Council will be meeting with Englewood Arts on June 23, 2008. Englewood Schools Liaison Karen Miller announced that everyone is excited with the new Superintendent Sean McDaniels and looking forward to good changes. Miller informed the Commission that former Englewo od Schools Principal Gary Price has passed away and that Colorado's Finest Alternative High School has presented a scholarship in his honor. Hultberg informed the Commission that due to Youth Commission Member Niederjohn • • graduating and heading off to college, this will be her last meeting. Niederjohn was recognized for her three and a half years of service as a youth member and was presented with a gift and cake. • Neiderjohn thanked the Commission and stated that it has been a pleasure working with everyone . • IX. • • Spada announced that the Jr. Golf Hole in One program started this week and registration has exceeded expectations with 520 participants. Spada discussed the give-a-ways for this year's program valued at $85.00. Commission members were invited to the Hole in One BBQ on Wednesday, June 25 1h. Hultberg thanked Council Member McCaslin for his work in getting former Denver Broncos to attend the BBQ. Woodward asked in regard to the number of residents in the program . Spada explained that only 10 to 15 percent of the participants are residents , noting that the number of residents who participate in the program each year have declined over the years. Spada reported that participants in the Jr. Golf program come from Littleton, Highlands Ranch, Conifer, Thornton and Westminster. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 5 :58pm. ~a ,~ Deborah A.
