CALL TO ORDER

CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION
Minutes of September 3, 2008
The regular monthly meeting of the City of Englewood Cultural Arts Commission was called to
order at 5:45pm by Chairperson Be11oluzzi at the Civic Center City Council Conference Room.

REVIEW OF AGENDA
There were no changes or additions to the agenda .
AP PROV AL OF MINUTES
Bertoluzzi asked if there were any changes or corrections to the minutes of August 6,
2008. There were none. The minutes were approved as presented.

There were no guests present.
V. NKW BUSINESS
There were no items for New Business .
VI. OLD BUSINESS
Be11oluzzi turned discussion over to Commission Member Bartunek and Art on Broadway.
Ba11unek reported that Commission Member Stewart and artist Sean Doherty attended a BID
meeting to present ideas for artwork on Broadway. Stewart reported that Da1Ten Hollingsw011h
with Community De ve lopment was also present to speak in regard to propriety rights . Stewart told
commission members that holiday banners will be the first to be hung so there is plenty of time to
come up with a design. Discussion followed .
Discussion turned to Art in Hampden Hall. Bartunek stated that Carol McGuigan has asked her to
do a Call for Entry pamphlet for the art in Hampden Hall. Vice Chairperson Moore suggested
hav ing the Call for Entry infotmation available at the Artabout Englewood event. Hultberg
explained that for short-term, the first art to be hung in Hampden Hall will be artwork from Cultural
Arts Commission members and members of the Malley Senior Center. Hultberg noted that the art
will be hung on September 16 th in time for You 're a Good Man , Charlie Bro wn that opens on •
September 19th. Discussion followed in regard to hanging the art and identification of the artwork .
Commission members verified that the artwork will be hung through December when the next round
of a1t will be hung . Hultberg replied yes. Bertoluzzi asked who is on the Selection Committee.
Hultberg explained that the Selection Committee will include Commission Member Stewait, Carol
McGuigan and Parks and Recreation Program Administrator Cheryl Adamson. Hultberg stated that
there needs to be a minimum of three people on the Committee and that there is another spot
available for a commission member if one is interested. Moore asked if the artist has the ability to
remo ve his or her art such as for another att show . Hultberg explained that the guidelines are pretty
flexible and an artist can remove their artwork if they wish but the show will run for six months and
in order to prevent a "hole" in the display, the artist will be encouraged to keep their artwork up for
that duration. Discussion followed.
Schnitzer spoke in regard to the Funfest, Olde Tyme Fair that took place on Saturday, August 23 rd.
Schnitzer repo1ted that the Cultural Arts Commission's booth "Pony Express, a hand-made card"
was a great idea and kids had a lot of fun. Moore discussed concerns of the public trying to cross
Belleview A ve nue to get to the event. Discussion followed regarding the Traffic Division posting
signs directing the public to the signalized crossing.
VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS
There was no update for Public Art.
Bertoluzzi turned discussion over to Englewood Arts. Berto1uzzi reported that a new school year
has started with the Strings Attached program and the new Frontier in Arts and Education
program. Bertoluzzi announced that the 2008-2009 Englewood Arts Conceit Series will begin on
September 19 th with You 're a Good Man , Charlie Brown.
Discussion followed regarding the recent meeting with City Council and Englewood Arts .
Bertoluzzi stated that he was not able to attend the meeting. City Council Liaison Jill Wilson
noted that she was also not able to attend the meeting but that she heard that there was good
dialogue . Bertoluzz i spoke in regard to the benefit of getting everything on the table to help move
the Cultural Arts Center project forward. Discussion followed .
Wilson asked Bertoluzzi in regard to Englewood Arts perspective on raising funds. Bertoluzzi
told Wilson that Englewood Arts needs to see what kind of support there is from the political
leaders in the City but reported that they ha ve some major donors who are waiting because they
don 't want to be the first to donate . Bertoluzzi stated that Englewood Arts is counting on the
money from the landbank ; noting that raising funds for the art center will be contingent upon the
landbank money. Discussion followed regarding the economic and social benefits of a Cultural
Alts Center in Downtown Englewood .
Commission members were given an update on the August Parks and Recreation Commission
meeting . Moore asked how Pirates Co ve did for the 2008 summer. Hultberg reported that for the
majority of the summer, re v enue numbers were ahead of last year's numbers which had been the
largest, but then the three days of rain at the end of August put this summer's revenue a little
behind last year's numbers. Bertoluzzi asked if there are any projects planned for Parks and
Recreation. Hultberg stated that there is a possible expansion for Pirates Cove that would
encompass a family ride and a possible picnic area. Hultberg explained that staff will be
discussing the expansion with City Council at the upcoming budget workshop.

UPC O MING EVENTS
Stewart discussed the upcoming Artabout Englewood scheduled for September 27 th and 28 1h .
Stewart stated that everyone is very excited to have some of the Englewood Schools participating
this year. Commission members discussed last minute details for the event.
DIRECTOR'S CHOICE
Hultberg informed the Commission that Channel 31 recently highlighted the City of Englewood
on its "Fox on Your Block" series . Hultberg told commission members that Fox 31 provided to
the City a copy of the segments which he thought the Commission would enjoy viewing .
Commission members viewed several of the Fox on Your Block segments that highlighted the
Department of Parks and Recreation.

Discussion turned to Commission Member 's Choice .
Wilson thanked commission members , telling them that they are a key to the success of the City of
Englewood and are so appreciated .
Schnitzer refen-ed to LeighAnn Hoffhines 's memorandum in the packet concerning the selection of
artwork for the 2009 Student Art Calendar. Schnitzer encouraged commission members to
participate in the selection of the Top 50 on Monday, September 29 1h. The judging of artwork will
take place at the October 151 Cultural Arts Commission meeting .
Wilson noted that Englewood Leadership Academy was named one of Denver Metro Area 's top
schools by 5280 Magazine .
