CALL TO ORDER
City of Englewood
PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION
Minutes of February 8, 2007
The regular monthly meeting of the Englewood Parks and Recreation Commission was called to order
at 5:35pm by Chairperson Gomes at the Malley Senior Recreation Center, 3380 S . Lincoln Avenue .

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Chairperson Gomes asked if there were any changes or corrections to the minutes of
January 11, 2007. Commission Member Woodward stated that under Commission
Member's Choice and discussion pertaining to City Council's approval for funding for
one youth to attend the NLC Conference in Washington D.C., Woodward stated that City
Council had approved funding for two youth to attend. It was also noted that the order
of the roman numerals were incorrect. The minutes were approved as amended.
III. SCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMENT
There were no visitors present for scheduled public comment.
IV. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMENT
There were no visitors present for unscheduled public comment.
V. DUNCAN PROPERTY UPDATE
Discussion was turned over to Recreation Manager Hultberg and Duncan property update.
Hultberg informed the Commission that the City of Englewood and Englewood Schools continue
to negotiate on the sale of the Duncan Park property. Hultberg reported that the department is
working on the Arapahoe County Open Space grant that is due February 23rd .
Englewood School Board Liaison Karen Miller reported that she has signed letters of support on
behalf of the Englewood School Board for the City's grant applications. Miller told the
Commission that 40 to 50 people from the Duncan Park neighborhood had attended Tuesday
night's Board meeting in support of the Duncan property remaining as a public park. Miller
explained that the Board tried to convey to the neighborhood group that it supports Duncan being
kept as a park and is working closely with the City. Miller stated that the group was encouraged •
to write a letter of support for the City's grant applications. Hultberg noted that he has spoken to a
representative from the neighborhood group in regard to a letter of support. Discussion followed.
VI. SHERIDAN REDEVELOPMENT UPDATE
Black turned discussion over to Dave Lee, Manager of Open Space. Lee reported that work
continues at the golf course along the South Platte River on what used to be the woodland area.
Lee told the Commission that the trees and brush that were taken down have been mulched and
dirt is being delivered to raise the ground above flood level. Commission members were
informed that ground is being plowed in preparation for the developer's retail buildings in addition
to the temporary junior golf program site . Vice Chairperson Waldman asked in regard to the
restaurant. Spada explained that the Caddie Shack on the Platte continues to get a crowd for
lunch.
VII. CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION UPDATE
Cultural Arts Commission Liaison Janet Moore gave an update on the Cultural Arts Commission.
Moore told the Commission that Englewood Arts has been in discussion with the group who put on
Scrooge in regard to an additional two to three performances at Hampden Hall the end of this year into
next year. Moore announced upcoming concerts including the Colorado Symphony Orchestra 's "The
Brass Quintet" on February 10th, the Fankofa on February 24th and the annual Back to Bach on March
3rd. Moore noted that the All District Art Show for Englewood Schools opens March 1st in the
Englewood Public Library in addition to the Juried Art Show at Hampden Hall opening the end of
March. •
VIII. DIRECTOR'S CHOICE
Black discussed a recent article he had read in regard to the abundance of snow and moisture the metro
area has received and the impact it has had on local youth sports organizations. Black explained that
due to the excessive moisture , sports organizations are being asked to postpone their start dates in
addition to find indoor practice facilities. Black went on to explain that due to existing programming,
both the Recreation Center and Malley Senior Center are unable to accommodate any requests for
indoor practices by Englewood youth sports organizations. Black commented that he expects to see
more moisture-related issues come up throughout the metro area over the next couple of months.
IX. COMMISSION MEMBERS' CHOICE
Commission Member Woodward congratulated Brad Anderson, Aquatic Facility Supervisor, for
being selected as one of the Top 46 Aquatic Directors in the Country and the Englewood
Recreation Center being awarded the top aquatic program in the State of Colorado by the United
States Water Fitness Association. Commission members concurred to do a letter of
congratulations to Anderson and his staff for receiving the prestigious awards.
Moore told the Commission that ART-NIC, a co-op art gallery on South Broadway, will be
staying open due to negotiations to lower the rent. Moore added that the painted violins will be at
ART-NIC in April, which will be raffled off for the Denver Young Artists Orchestra.
In regard to the new middle school, Miller reported that students are helping to pick colors, a
mascot and a name which should be decided by the end of the month. Miller reported that staff
from both Flood and Sinclair has chosen the Middle Year's Program of International Baccalaureate

as the curriculum program for the new middle school. Discussion followed. Miller discussed the
proposed Englewood High School's internship program that will allow students to earn credits
toward graduation by serving on-the-job internships with local businesses. Vice Chairperson
Waldman asked Miller if Englewood Schools has listed the Flood property yet. Miller stated that
they are in the process of gathering information and setting criteria. Gomes asked if the property
will include the field that is east of the school. Miller replied yes.
Youth Commission Member Niederjohn encouraged commission members to attend the Annual
Blood Drive on February 23rd sponsored by Englewood High School's National Honor Society.
The Commission was informed of a recent incident at the Englewood Recreation Center involving
an older gentleman who had a heart attack while using an exercise bike. Black stated that the
gentleman had stopped breathing and staff, along with a citizen, administered CPR until
paramedics arrived. Commission members were told that the gentleman left with a pulse and is
expected to recover. Black credited staff and the citizen for saving the gentleman's life .

The meeting was adjourned at 6:20pm.
