Minutes of August 8, 1991
The regular monthly meeting of the Englewood Parks and Recreation Commission was
called to order at 5:40 p.m. by Chairman Neyer at the Centennial Park shelter.
Members present : Armstrong, Daugherty, Gerlick, Gomes, Neyer, C. Wiggins, M. Wiggin s
Members absent: D. Clayton, Black, ex officio
Also present: Charles Esterly, Director of Public Works
LuAnne Mickelson, Recreation Services Manager
Chairman Neyer asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes of
July 11, 1991. There were none. A motion was made and seconded that the minutes be
approved as presented. The motion passed unanimously.
The Commission briefly discussed Goals and Objectives item no. 2a pertaining to new
Commission member orientation packets as it was presented at the July meeting. The
content was approved with some additions.
Regarding the Commission vacancy created with the resignation of Commissioner Bill
Clayton, Commissioner Wiggins reported that a resolution has been adopted by City Council
to appoint a School Board member to the Parks and Recreation Commission. The resolution
was tabled since the School Board meets only one time per month during the summer.
Wiggins contacted School Board President Mary Oounay who indicated that the Board will
meet on August 13 and select a representative to serve on the Commission. Wiggins stated
that the resolution to appoint the School Board member to the Commission will be present ed
to Council on August 19 and that term will expire on February l, 1992. Discussion ensued.
The Commission requested that copies of the Commission minutes be mailed to the School
Board President each month. It is expected that a School Board representative will be
present at the September Commission meeting.
Commissioner Armstrong entered the meeting at 5:45 p.m.

Recreation Services Manager LuAnne Mickelson, on behalf of Director Black, reported
that the Malley Senior Advisory Committee recommends to the Parks and Recreation
Commission to allow, in selected cases, younger adults to take part in Malley Center
classes. Mickelson explained that ''selected" classes would be those determined to benefit
everyone from an enrollment and budgetary standpoint, and which would maximize staffing
and facility usage. Discussion ensued . Commissioner Armstrong made a motion, seconded by
Commissioner Gomes, that the Parks and Recreation Commission support the policy change
that Malley Senior Recreation Center is considering regarding allowing younger adults to
participate in selected senior classes through the Malley Center. The motion passed
unanimously.
Mickelson distributed copies of information regarding the CPRA Fall Conference and
stated that registration fees for Commission members wishing to attend the conference will
be paid by the City.
Mickelson reported that the Summer Drama Production was successful with attendance
figures similar to 1990 attendance figures. Mickelson stated that the City was awarded a
grant of $11,690 for the 1992 Drama Program by the Arapahoe County Cultural Council.
Mickelson stated that as the new supervisor of this program, she believes that certain
original aspects of the program may need to be revitalized, i.e., first and foremost, an
opportunity for kids of the community to be involved in a dramatic production, and,
secondly, it is an opportunity for members of the community to be involved in a drama
production situation.
Mickelson reported that the courts have granted the quiet title for the St. Louis
School land north of the Malley Center and the attorneys have applied for the title on
behalf of the archdiocese. When the title is received, the closing on the property will
be scheduled.
There was brief discussion regarding improving the fence along Windermere north of
Belleview.

Commissioner Armstrong expressed appreciation for being able to purchase advance
discount Water World tickets at the Englewood Recreation Center. She added that perhaps
people are not aware that these tickets can be purchased at ERC .
Commissioner Armstrong passed around a copy of an article that appeared in the
Volunteers of Outdoor Colorado magazine covering the 10,000 Trees Project at Englewood
Golf Course.
Commissioner Armstrong inquired about the Englewood turnout at the Colorado Senior
Games. Mickelson stated that the Englewood team consisted of approximately 38 seniors who
brought home approximately 90 medals overall.
Commissioner Gomes inquired about the status of the Riverside Miniature Golf Course
and Go Kart Track and was informed that patronage has increased substantially. Additional
walks have been added to accommodate the lines of people.
Commissioner Gerlick discussed the Summer Drama Production, of which he was a
participant, regarding budget, organization of set building, Commission visibility, the
cast party, etc. There was some discussion regarding hanging banners across Broadway.
There was brief discussion regarding the recent break in at the Englewood Golf Course
Clubhouse.
Commissioner Armstrong stated she received a complaint that the beer cart does not
operate on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays at the Englewood Golf Course.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:50 p.m.
