HomeMy WebLinkAbout1993-03-11 PRC MINUTESEnglewood Parks and Recreation Commission Minutes of March 11, 1993 The regular monthly meeting of the Englewood Parks and Recreation Commission was called to order at 5:35 p.m. by Chairman Neyer in City Manager's Conference Room B. Members present: Members absent: Also present: Armstrong, Bannick, Christie, Gerlick, Gomes, Neyer , Sortland, Waggoner , Black, ex officio Gulley Charles Esterly, Director of Public Works Chairman Neyer asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes of February 11, 1993. There were none. A motion was made and seconded that the minutes be approved as presented. The motion passed unanimously. Director Esterly reported that the purchase of the Mossbarger property adjacent to Baker Park has been finalized, and discussed development possibilities for the additional land. Esterly stated that the Englewood Soccer Association is requesting construction of an additional soccer field at that location, but explained that the area available would not accommodate a full size soccer field without eliminating or reducing the size of existing facilities. Esterly described the existing playground area at the Alternative High School located south of Baker Park and stated that the school might be willing to turn over the use of the land to be developed into additional park facilities and possibly a soccer field if combined with the Mossbarger property . Esterly suggested that the Commission may wish to survey the neighboring community and park users for input regarding expansion of the park, and suggested using survey cards or extending an invitation to attend the April Commission meeting. The Commission agreed that survey cards should be distributed in the surrounding area, along with an invitation to attend the April Commission meeting for additional information and citizen input. Officials from the Alternative High School will also be contacted, and a notice will be posted at Baker Park to inform park users of expansion plans and welcome their input at the April Commission meeting. 1 Commissioner Armstrong entered the meeting at 6:00 p.m. Director Black distributed copies of the Spring 1993 Recreation Brochure and called attention to a photograph of the new pool toy, a dog named "Ho wsie ", which was named as a result of a contest held at the Recreation Center ; and the updated Parks and Recreation Commission listing , which includes meeting dates and locations. Commissioner Gomes reported that City Manager Fraser was invited by the South Suburban Parks and Recreation District to ,provide two Englewood representatives to work with their committee to determine a name for the new regional park. Mr. Fraser requested that a member of the Parks and Recreation Commission be appointed to serve on the committee along wi th Mayor Wiggins. Commissioner Bannick advised he would be willing to serve on that committee. For Commission's information , Director Esterly reported that the City Manager 's office was contacted by an organization expressing interest in the possibility of ho lding a carnival in Englewood in 1993, possibly in the north parking lot of Cinderella City and extending to Cushing Park. This organization has conducted carnivals in past years in Littleton and at Bandimere Speedway. Additional information will be reported as it becomes available. Commissioner Gomes expressed concern that roller blading activity is taking place on the Romans Park tennis courts, which is posted as a prohibited activity at all Englewood tennis court locations. Commissioner Gerlick asked if anyone would like to submit additional changes to the Commission's Goals and Objectives before he makes the final copies. No additional changes were offered. Chairman Neyer reported that he received positive comments from parents regarding the · · recently completed youth basketball program. The meeting was adjourned at 6 :30 p.m. 2
