Minutes of April 10, 1997
The regular monthly meeting of the Englewood Parks and Recreation Commission was called to
order at 5 :34pm by Chairman Gomes at the Malley Senior Recreation Center.

Chairman Gomes asked ifthere were any additions or corrections to the minutes of March 13,
1997 . There was a correction to members present. Gerlick was not in attendance. A motion was made and
seconded that the minutes be approved as amended. The motion passed unanimously.
Black informed Commission that the Englewood School District and All Souls School have come
to an agreement on the use of the Duncan Building. The City of Englewood, Parks and Recreation
Department is currently working with Larry Nisbet on coordinating the restrooms. An agreement has been
made to install port-o-lets in the park. Black explained that the port-o-lets would be similar to the ones at
Washington Park with an outside structure to cover the port-o-lets. The Parks and Recreation Department
and Englewood School District have agreed to split the cost of the facility and the first year of maintenance.
The Department would assume the cost after that. Black stated that a meeting will be held with neighbors
of the Park to determine a location of the port-o-let.
Commission member Armstrong asked if the facility would be handicapped accessible. Black
replied yes .
Commission member Neyer inquired why the City would assume the cost after the first year .
Black explained that the Department of Parks and Recreation is already responsible for the cost of the
current Duncan Park restroom and that it should come under the Parks jurisdiction.
Black announced that the City of Englewood is close to closing on the Home Lumber property.
The closing could occur in 60-90 days, at which time the property will be turned over to the City of
Englewood .
Gary Hultberg reported staff had met with Gary Price, Bishop Elementary School Principal, to
discuss recreation programming for the alternative school calendar. Hultberg reported the changes would
result in more contact with the Bishop students and more programming being offered to them. Program
ideas included sport camps and special events/programs being offered at the Englewood Recreation Center
during Bishop's breaks. A survey on the Before and After School program will be done to see if enough
interest exists to offer the program.
Neyer asked if the Department had any idea of the number of kids affected by the change.
Hultberg reported that Young American Baseball, as an example, has always been low in participants from
the Bishop area. Staff was hoping to use this opportunity to increase the number of participants and not
lose them.
Armstrong asked if Summer Camps would be offered during the bre al:s. Hultberg responded that
the specifics still need to be worked out.
In regards to offering a Before and After School program, Black reminded Commission of the
mandate from City Council that the program be required to recover 100% of its cost. Participants would be
charged accordingly. Staff is working with the situation .
Commission member Christie thanked Hultberg and staff for sitting down and working with the
School District.
Hultberg added that a flye r will be sent to Bishop Elementary School parents with the programs
being offered through the Parks and Recreation Department.
Hultberg reported that the Cushing Skateboard Park has been upgraded with amenities.
Hultberg announced that the Parks and Recreation Department will be offering a "Skate Rodeo"
this summer in cooperation with professional skateboarders and in-line skaters. The event will be held on
Saturday, June 14 from 11 :OOam to 4:00pm with demonstrations and lessons by the professionals. Limited
safety equipment will be available to participants . Specific ages have not been determined yet.
Neyer asked how the event is being advertised . Hultberg responded through the Summer
Recreation brochure and flyers.
The Commission was updated on recent hires within the Department. Beth Little has been hired
for Youth General Program Administrator. Beth has worked for the Department the last two and a half
years in the Before and After School and Summer Playground/ Adventure Camp programs . Shannon
Bailey, Adult and Senior Fitness Education, has recently moved from Scottsdale Arizona . Shannon brings
ten years of recreation experience. The Department is in the process of second interviews for the
Marketing/Public Relations position .
Black reported he had met with Larry Nisbet in regards to a Before and After School Program at
Maddox Elementary. Discussion also included the possibility of a kindergarten program at Maddox
Elementary . Black told Nisbet that the City of Englewood would be open to discussion.
Hultberg thanked the En glewood School District on helping with the tennis courts at Flood Middle
School. The City of Englewood was allowed to go in and repair the surface so that an in-line skate program
could be offered .
Christie congratulated Carolyn Armstrong for being recognized by the Englewood School District
for her volunteer work . The Commission congratulated Armstrong.
Christie announced that a new program was being offered this summer called Summer of Service
(S .O .S .) The program targets youth ages 11-14 years of age whose parents work in the summertime . The
program provides supervision at worksites . Transportation is provided. Additional information would be
provided in the May packet.
Gerlick informed Commission that the Cultural Arts Commission brought in a consultant at the
April meeting . The Commission was hoping the consultant would provide some direction and cohesiveness
among the board .
Gerlick announced the 1997 Englewood Summer Drama Production would be "South Pacific".
The show would open July 31 •1 with perfonnances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and a matinee on
Sunday.
In regards to the bike path from Belleview Park to the South Platte River, Gerlick read that
construction was underway . Black reported that the City of Englewood has talked with South Suburban
Parks and Recreation Foundation and has committed to pay $40,000 towards the project. The City of
Englewood is in the process of negotiating with the City of Littleton to purchase an easement on the west
side of Santa Fe. The City of Englewood has been assured the path through Belleview Park will be
completed by Memorial Day .
Armstrong reminded Commission members of the goal to review the level of security in city parks.
Armstrong asked if a Safety Service staff would be available to meet with the Commission. Black
responded that it would be put on the agenda for the May meeting .
Joe Sack, Malley Recreation Facility Supervisor, apprised Commission of upcoming events at the
Malley Center. On May 17, 1997 a Garage Sale will be held from 8am-3pm. A pancake breakfast will be
held prior to the sale starting at 7 :OOa.m.
Sack announced that the Malley Senior Recreation Center will be celebrating their 20th
Anniversary on December 3 , 1997 . Events will be held throughout the year in celebration.
Gomes announced the Annual Englewood Holiday Parade will be held on November 1, 1997 with
a rain date of November 8 , 1997. The theme of the parade will be "Englewood All Stars Holiday Parade".
The meeting was adjourned at 6:30pm.
