PARK PATROL
Bob Spada, Golf Course Manager, gave a brief report on the park patrol that was initiated
this past summer. Spada reported that staff from the Departments of Parks and
Recreation and Safety Services felt the patrols were effective and highly visible, and had
resulted in a decrease in vandalism. According to a report from Lieutenant S. Knoll, the
1998 Park Patrol program was the most aggressive program that Safety Services has
engaged in during the past years. Safety Services staff felt that the relationship with the
Parks and Recreation Department was excellent, particularly when dealing with problems
associated with softball players at Belleview and Spencer. Spada reported that this was
the first year that Director Black had not received phone calls regarding softball players.
The report also noted that public perception was overwhelmingly positive. Staff from
both departments felt the program was valuable and would like to see it continue.
Regarding the park patrols, Parks Supervisor Lasley commented on the positive feedback
he had received from residents. Lasley stated that the increased patrols made a difference
in the amount of vandalism in the parks .
Commission member Christie asked in regards to cost of the program. Facility Manager
Leonard thought the program was funded through a grant that was also used to provide
officers at some Englewood schools .
V. GOCO GRANT/CLAYTON ATHLETIC FIELD
Commission members were informed that the GOCO grant application for the Clayton
Athletic Field was submitted the first part of October. The Department was requesting a
grant in the amount of $53 ,000 . The total cost of the field is $94,000. The City will
match $41,000. The Department will be notified by the first of December regarding a
decision. Staff recognized the students of Clayton Elementary for their efforts in raising
$1,000 towards the field.
Commission member Christie stated that she had been approached regarding a girls
softball field at the Englewood High School detention pond. Discussion followed.
Commission members concluded that there was not enough room, the field would be too
short.
VII. BIKE PATH/CINDERELLA CITY DEVELOPMENT
Manager Spada spoke in regards to a bike path connection from the Denny's parking lot
at Hampden and Bannock to the new Cinderella City development site. Spada explained
that the current bike path ends at the parking lot. Staff is looking at a viable solution to
get bikers through the new site. Discussion followed regarding possible routes. Spada
