PR[SLNI: Bruce Hogue., Al Quaintance., Uirginia Johnson .. John Peterson., Joe Rathburn., Gerald SaMpson .. Lois Sterling REGRElS: Betty Dounay., Beu SiMon ALSO PRESENT: Sharon Winkle .. Director of Libraries Donna Gottberg., Recording Secretary Roll call was taken and a quoruM declared present. There were no scheduled or unscheduled visitors. Mr. Hogue turned the Meeting over to Ms. Winkle for the Director's Report . Ms. Winkle presented the Library Guidelines .. adopted by the Board and Council in 1981-82., in a new forMat. No discussion. The Library Policies were distributed in a new forMat with discussion of proposed revisions. ~7-11 MOTION: That the revisions on the EPL Policies be accepted as presented. Moved by : Al Quaintance Seconded by: Gerald SaMpson Motion carried. Ms. Winkle presented for discussion the Draft copy of the Policy on Suspension of Library Privileges. Ms. Winkle gave background on the need for this policy., noting that it probably would not be invoked often .. but felt there was need for this type of policy. After discussion .. John Peterson suggested wording changes for clarity. A Motion on this policy was tabled until the May Meeting to follow discussion of a revised draft Ms. Winkle gave an update on the Contributors• Club. This prograM was not introduced to the public during National Library Week <April 5-11) as planned. It is now scheduled for a May introduction following receipt of application forMs which are currently at the printers . Director's Choice The videocassette tape service began during National Library Week. CoMMents on this service have been good. Ms . Winkle distrib11ted the Budget-At-A-Glance brochure to the Board MeMbers. £hairMan's Report Mr. Hogue asked for volunteers to forM a coMMittee to prepare the 1988 Board Budget Request. This would need to be coMpleted by the June Board Meeting. Uolunteers are Al Quaintance. Gerald SaMpson and Bruce Hogue. Mr. Hogue gave background on a National Library Card CaMpaign. This is a drive to give every student an opportunity to apply for a library card. Thi s is endorsed by the AALSC, AASL. ALTA and the Public Library Hssociation and Young Adult services of ALA. After discussion it wa s suggested that the Library Board contact school PTA's. The Board 1..1ould like to receive statistics regarding the nuMber of c hildren in Englewood who have library cards. 87-12 MOTIOH: That the Board accept the challenge given by the U.S. Secretary of Education and that the Board forM a working c oMMittee to study the best way to iMpleMent a response to the challenge. Moved by: John Peterson Seconded by: Uirginia Johnson Motion carried. Mr. Hogue asked that a coMMittee be for-Med (in June>. after statistics have been gathered, to study the drive to have every student have the opportunity to apply for a library card. Mr. Hogue read a response froM Ethel Altenbach (recently retired librarian>. thanking the Board for its letter of appreciation. Mr. Hogue asks that all Board MeMbers read the "suggestions" part of the bulletin board in the Main Library. This is where public coMMents and staff responses are posted. MeMbers' Choice Mr. Rathburn a sked if the Elks group could re s erve the f oyer di s play case . Ms. Winkle replied they could. if they conta c t Cir c ulation personnel and Make a reservation. Ms. Winkle noted that poster s could be displayed in the foyer also . -2 - • • • • • • Mr. Hogue noted that every MeMber received a MPLA brochure this Month. This is a once-a-year MeMbership drive. He noted this organization now covers 10 states. Mr. Rathburn suggested we contact 6wen~s Used Book Store. He noted that Malley Center sold soMe books to her and thought it Might be a way to eMpty out soMe of our withdrawn books. Mr. Rathburn further suggested better signage over the sale book table. Gerald SaMpson noted there is a coMputer exhibit at Currigan Hall April 15,16 and 17. Mr. Peterson is running for the school board. There will be a candidate foruM this Thursday at Hay School at 7:30 p.M. The election will be held May 5. The Literacy CoMMittee to which Mr. Peterson has been appointed is "on hold" at this tiMe. Mr. Chandler has been unable to achieve funding for this coMMittee. Ms. Sterling had a list of concerns froM a patron and forMer Board MeMber, Lois Lighthall. Most of theM concerned BookMobile services. Ms. Winkle answered the concerns where possible. She will contact Ms. Lighthall for further discussion of her concerns. Ms. Sterling will be away for a tiMe this SUMMer 7 but should be able to attend the June and August Meetings. Mr. Hogue noted there were Z CLA prograMs COMing up. One on friday, May 1 at Colorado Springs and one on May 15 at Idaho Springs. CoMMittee Reports The Board/Staff annual picnic will be held at Cushing Park on Saturday, August 1. More details will be forthcoMing. The pavilion at Cushing Park has been reserved. The Statistical Report for March was briefly discussed. Ms. Winkle noted that the large OepartMent of Education funding cuts proposed by the State Legislature have been Modified. The continued existence of the State Library was questionable had the cuts been approved. She will keep the Board posted regarding future related legislative activity. 87-13 noTION: That the Minutes froM the March 10, 1987 Meeting be approved as presented.
