Englewood Public Library Advisory Board
SepteMber 9, 1986
The regular Meeting of the Library Advisory Board was called to
order· at 7:32 p.M. by ChairMan Lois Sterling.
PRESEHT: Lois Sterling, Bruce Hogue. John Peterson. Al Quaintance
Gerald SaMpson, Beu SiMon, Jerry Ualdes. Kay Uan Ualkenburg
REGRETS: Dorothy Wheelehan

Roll call was taken and a quoruM declared present.
There were no scheduled or unscheduled visitors.
ChairMan Sterling turned the Meeting over to Sharon Winkle for
the Di_r:_~Lor_:__s Rep9_rt.
Ms. Winkle stiMulated preliMinary di s cussion of the upcoMing
contract with Arapahoe Library District <ALO) on reciprocal
borrowing by giving background on the contract in the past, and
the iteMs for discussion in 1987. The Main topic for discussion
being, should the BookMobile continue to serve the Alice Terry
School in Sheridan <there are Many Englewood students present at
that particular stop), at no charge to ALO patrons who use the
service. This will be addressed in the contract for 1987. ALO
does not want to continue paying a borrower's fee for the ALO
patrons at that stop. After further discussion on the issue it
was decided to table any decision until the October Meeting when
the actual contract will be at hand.
Mr. Quaintance suggested a possible sub-coMMittee, Made up of
Library Advisory Board MeMbers and Library staff, to exaMine the
issue.
Ms. Winkle gave a brief update regarding the display planned by
the Library for Banned Book Week, SepteMber 20-27. This
undertaking is sponsored by the Library Advisory Board. There
will be flyers available advertising the display (approxiMately
37 books>, along with annotated bibliographies describing
censorship of each book. This is tiMely. in that Denver Public
Library <OPL> has a large exhibit on display regarding
censorship. Newspaper articles on censorship were brought
forward at this tiMe.
Ms. Winkle gave a brief report on the fall festival in which the
Library participated on SepteMber 6. It was the feeling of the
Board that the bad weather for the festival did not give it a
fair showing. The Board stated they would l i ke to try i t again
with More Board MeMber inuolueMent . I t was suggested there be a
rain-date planned , and there be Mor e lead -tiMe for planning.

An update on the Board Budget Request ~as given by Ms. Winkle.
stat1nq there were no Major changes.
t'ls. W111kle \Jent on to update the Library Budget Request. noting
no MaJor changes, and that capital spending on books. etc. \Jould
be kept at the 1986 level pending Council approval.
It \Jas further noted in the Budget discussions by Ms. Winkle that
the Data Processing Steering CoMMittee is forMing a Data
Processing Master Plan. which includes expenditures for each
departMent for hard\Jare and software. as the need arises. The
Library OepartMent Public Access Catalog <PAC) is scheduled for
1987 iMpleMentation. She \Jill keep the Board inforMed as
inforMation becoMes available.
Ms. Winkle gave the date of Oct. 21-22 for the AutoMation SysteM
in the Library to go online. Oynix representatives \Jill be on
hand to help as needed.
!J.!_rector's Choice
Ms. Winkle has available a press packet froM ALO explaining its
requested Mill levy increase froM 1.5 Mil to 3.0 being placed on
the ballot in HoveMber.
Ms. Winkle noted that the Grant requested froM the Colorado
Endo\JMent for the HuManities \Jas denied. Ms. HinkeMeyer is no\J
looking into a scaled-do\Jn version of a discussion group to be
funded by the Library after January 1987.
Ms. Winkle gave a brief update on the costs involved for the
speical identification cards for a booster's group. Library
staff is still investigating all aspects of forMing such a group.
ChairMan's Choice
Ms. Sterling asked if \Je \Jere going to continue to have the Joint
Arapahoe County Library Board Meetings. Ms. Winkle noted it had
been a long tiMe since the last Meeting (which Englewood hosted).
Sharon will bring this up at the APAL Meeting she is to attend
next week.
MeMbers' Choice
Bruce Hogue brought forth a ballot he received froM Mountain
Plains Library Assoc. <MPLA> to vote for new officers. He asked
for help in voting.
Mr. Hogue asked what patrons do when our coMputer goes do\Jn. Ms.
Winkle explained checkins and checkout s would be recorded
Manually and then keystroked into the coMputer when it caMe back
up. However, the Library is looking into other possibilities, in
equipMent, for such a down tiMe.
Mr. Ualdes asked if the BookMobile wa s back on the road. Ms .
Winkle explained the BookMobile was in for repairs alMost the
whole Month of August, but when it r e turned froM th e garage i t
did not have the power to cliMb hills. It i s now back in the

garage for further Maintenance and should back on the road
Thur s day .
Mr . Peterson stated he had contacted Waldenbooks, Dalton Books
and the Mustard Seed and all have agreed to participate in the
Banned Books Week in soMe way. John stated he had a c o py of t h e
SupreMe Cou1~t Brief Appeal on CreationisM prepared by Southern
California Skeptics. Anyone wishing to borrow it May co n tact
hiM .
Ms. Uan Ualkenburg asked if any MeMbers planned to attend the
Colorado Library Assoc. <CLA> conference at Silver Creek in
October. If anyone plans to go Sharon Must know by friday of
this week s o a request for funding May be Made to City Council
Al Quaintance asked if the Library has or is planning any
Elderhostel prograMs. Ms. Winkle stated she thought Malley
Center Might have such prograMs. Mr. Quaintance will
investigate.
There were no coMMittee reports.
The Statistical Report for August 1986 was briefly discussed,
noting circulation figures were down because of the BookMobile
being out of service Most of the Month.
Ms . Winkle noted there would be a special prograM on Scotland on
October 11 at the Library. AnnounceMents and press releases will
be forthcoMing.
Sharon stated she has not received any feedback froM the letters
sent to patrons who had coMMented on our new non-circulating
newspapers and Magazines policy.
