The regular meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board was
called to order by Chairman John Peterson at 7:30 p.m.
PRESENT: John Peterson, Larilyn Ashlock, Douglas Cohn, Mary
Dounay, Virginia Johnson, Al Quaintance, Joe Rathburn,
· Dorothy Totton
REGRETS: John Gray
ALSO
PRESENT: Sharon Winkle, Director of Library and Recreaation
Services, Alex Habenicht, City Council Representative
to the Board, Donna Gottberg, Recording Secretary
Roll call was taken and a quorum declared present.
There were no scheduled or unscheduled visitors.
Chairman Peterson turned the meeting over to Director Winkle for
the Director's Report.
Director Winkle gave a brief update on the recruitment of the
Library Service Manager position, noting that there were 30
applicants, most from the Colorado area. Applicants will be
screened and selected for interview. The interview panel
consists of Mary Dounay from the Library Board, Lelle Holmes and
Joan Hinkemeyer, Library personnel, and Sharon Winkle. Ms.
Dounay asked Board members to relay any suggestions for questions
to her as soon as possible. Discussion followed.
Director Winkle · brought forward copies of special bibliographies
compiled by Elaine Lay, Children's Reference Librarian.
Questionnaires were sent to area schools and these bibliographies
are a compilation of the favorite "read-aloud" books of the
students in the schools •
Ms. Dounay asked if books were ever challenged at the Library.
Ms. Winkle noted that "yes" there have been challenges in the
past. Discussion followed.
Director Winkle brought forth a flier for a "Fine Free Week" at
the Library. This is not an annual event, but staff felt it was
time for a special week with the hopes of bringing in long
overdue materials. This will take place in conjunction with
National Library Week. Discussion followed.
A flier was distributed regarding the Colorado Information
Connection Speakouts taking place May through September this
year. Director Winkle stated it was a very worthwhile program.
Chairman's Choice
Chairman Peterson announced that Mr. John Gray plans to resign
his Board position. A formal letter of resignation will be
forthcoming. Recruitment for a new Board member will be needed.
Mr. Peterson read a letter from Joan Hinkemeyer, Information
Services Administrator, thanking the Board for its donation of
funds to purchase talking books.
Members' Choice
Joe Rathburn read excerpts from an article on libraries from the
March 1990 issue of the Elks Magazine. Copies of the article
will be duplicated for all Board members.
Al Quaintance brought forth a Denver Post article on Denver
Public Library which will be duplicated and sent to all Board
members. He asked if we were going to participate in "The Night
of a Thousand Stars." Ms. Winkle answered that she did not know,
but noted the Library plans a birthday celebration for Beverly
Cleary (she cannot attend, but sent autographed bookmarks), noted
children's author, at the Library later this month.
Mary Dounay announced that an Englewood High School student, Troy
Deering, won a Boetcher Scholarship, one of 40 awarded throughout
the state.
Director Winkle noted Joan Hinkemeyer has contacted the Head Boy
at Englewood High School regarding volunteer opportunities for
students.
Alex Habenicht awarded Board members present a city logo lapel
pin from City Council. Ms. Habenicht noted that it is a new
Council policy to award these pins to all new Board members
beginning with the current Board members.
90-11 MOTION: That the Board expresses their appreciation to
City Council for the City logo lapel pins.
Moved by: Douglas Cohn
Seconded by: Joe Rathburn
Motion carried.

Councilperson Habenicht wanted to explain Council's Planning
Session. The session includes top administrative staff where
strategies and City goals are discussed. Discussion followed.
Larilyn Ashlock asked why EPL has not issued any articles in the
Rocky Mountain News Tuesday feature on Libraries and their new
books. Ms. Winkle just recently became aware of these articles
and Joan Hinkemeyer and her staff will probably become involved
shortly.
Alex Habenicht urges everyone who is able to attend the Englewood
High School production of West Side Story.
Joe Rathburn expressed his feelings that students need to become
involved in volunteer work and noted some area programs.
A question arose regarding the Bookmobile and its status.
Director Winkle noted that for an old vehicle it was going well.
Parts and ability to work on such an old vehicle are becoming
more and more difficult. There is rust beginning to show in the
lower part of the vehicle so it needs some body repair and paint.
Ms. Habenicht, as a member of the Economic Coalition, asked Ms.
Winkle and the Board to be thinking of the Bookmobile's
appearance as a component of the City image, and try to
incorporate the City logo somewhere on the vehicle when it is
repainted.
There were no Committee Reports .
The Statistical Report for March was briefly discussed with Board
members asking if Sunday hours have proved worthwhile. Director
Winkle noted that there are a great number of patrons using the
Library on Sundays . Personnel shortages are still a problem with
keeping staffing at full level. The Library will not be open on
Sundays during June, July and August. This is a slow time with
the children out of school and other users focussing on outdoor
activities.
90-12 MOTION: That the Board accept the Minutes from the March
13, 1990 meeting as presented.
Moved by: Al Quaintance
Seconded by Joe Rathburn
Motion carried.
Meeting adjourned at 8:44 p.m .
