Englewood Public Library Board
May 8, 1990
In the absence of Chairman Peterson the regular meeting of the
Englewood Public Library Board was called to order by
Vice-Chairman Larilyn Ashlock at 7:32 p.m.
PRESENT: Larilyn Ashlock, Douglas Cohn, Mary Dounay (arrived at
7:55 p.m.), Virginia Johnson, Al Quaintance, Dorothy
Totton.
REGRETS: John Peterson, Joe Rathburn
ALSO
PRESENT: Sharon Winkle, Director of Library and Recreation
Services, Alex Habenicht, City Council Representative
to the Board, Donna Gottberg, Recording Secretary
Roll call was taken and a quorum declared present.
There were no scheduled or unscheduled visitors.·
Vice-Chairman Ashlock turned the meeting over to Director Winkle
for the Director's Report.
Director Winkle gave background on compilation .of applications
for the position of Library Service Manager. After reviewing the
applications she saw there were only 2 t°hat had the minimum
qualifications for the posit i on. At a suggestion from one of the
Department Supervisors she contacted Hank Long, former Library
Services Administrator, and asked if he might be interested in
applying for this position. He was and will begin work in that
position on May 21. The city Manager will appoint Mr. Long to
the Board as an ex officio non-voting member, and he will attend
future Board meetings in place of Ms. Winkle. Director Winkle
explained the structure of the Library/Recreation Department.
Discussion followed .
Director Winkle noted that the first data base of the CD-ROM
(Facts on File) will be put out for the public soon. The
progress has been slow with this item due to software problems.
Director Winkle announced that Library staff has planned an Open •
House to be held May 19 in recognition of the 70th anniversary of
the Library. At the Open House past and present Board members
will be recognized. Penny Lommen and Nancy Bunker have worked on
this event. There will be songs and silent films from the 20's,
the period during which the Library was founded. Mr. Long will
attend if at all possible. Ms. Bunker has prepared a display for
the foyer (see latest copy of The Legacy). Refreshments will be
served. Ms. Johnson, Ms. Dounay and Mr. Quaintance volunteered
to help serve. During the 3 p.m. reception Ms. Beverly Simon
will make a few comments.
Joe Rathburn gave a report to Director Winkle regarding
availability and cost of obtaining a plaque naming all past and
present Board members. A walnut plaque with header plate and
holding 100 brass plates (including engraving) would cost $375.00
from Forum Engraving. Ms. Habenicht suggested 2 plaques be
ordered, but after discussion it was decided only 1 plaque was
needed now and Forum Engraving is very good at matching items for
the future.
90-13 MOTION: That the Board purchase one plaque this year with
header plate and 100 brass plates to honor past and present Board
members, with consideration of a 2nd plaque for the future.
Moved by: Dorothy Totton
Seconded by: Al Quaintance
Discussion followed
Motion carried.
The City Council Mission Statement (mailed earlier) was brought
forth for discussion. The Goals and Objectives part of ~he
statement is not available in final form, but Ms. Habenicht
listed the goals. Discussion followed.
Director's Choice

on the Fine Free Week to Director Winkle. This was distributed
to Board members and discussion followed.
John Gray has not submitted a formal resignation in writing.
Director Winkle has proceeded to notify Council of his
resignation and expects that a new appointee will be named to
fill the unexpired term.

Mr. Cohn suggested the library carry a book of tax forms during
the tax season.
Director Winkle gave background on the Library's carrying tax
forms and noted expense, lack of staff, and displacement of
Library Services led the Library to drop that service.
Discussion followed.
Ms. Habenicht noted that there is a program for the Macintosh
computer called Macintax available that carries some of the out
of state forms.
Ms. Winkle noted that the Library's Macintosh needs upgrading.
Staff will discuss whether to upgrade the units or to discontinue
the service during preparation of the 1991 Budget
Recommendations.
Ms. Dounay reminded persons present that Englewood Schools will
host a Public Forum on Monday, May 14. This is a special session
to be held at Sinclair School at 6 p.m. and a video will be shown
lasting approximately 40 minutes.
Ms. Totten asked that a card be sent from the Board to the Kolenc
family.
Ms. Totten has been involved in arranging her church library .
She noted that after asking members to return their books 5 out
of 30 were returned, one of which had been checked out in 11983.
Ms. Totten noted Doug Cohn's picture was in the school news. He
gave a presentation on mining and gold panning to the schools.
She suggested he give the presentation to the Englewood
Historical Society.
Mr. Quaintance gave raves on the West Side Story presentation by
the Englewood High School. Ms. Habenicht's daughter was
outstanding as Maria.
There were no committee reports.
The Statistical Report for April 1990 was briefly discussed, with
Ms. Winkle noting the continued upswing of reference questions at
the main library.
The Board thanked Ms. Ashlock for the lovely refreshments.
90-14 MOTION: That the Board accept the Minutes from the April
10, 1990 meeting as presented.
