REGRETS : C. Atkins , V. Williams, R. Stoddard , M. Dounay, J . Knight.
ALSO PRESENT : Hank Long, Library Director, Joan Clayton, Recording Seaetary.
Roll call was taken and a quorum was not declared. It was decided to continue the
meeting on an information only basis .
Scheduled/Unscheduled Visitor
Scott Manley , Chair of the Friends Steering Committee , was unable to attend the
meeting but would be available to meet with the Board at the February meeting.
Old Business
Approval of the Minutes from the November 8 meeting was delayed until the January
10 , 1995 meeting due to lack of a quorum .
Ms . Brenengen reported on the Friends of the Library Steering Committee . The
committee is a small one but very focused and enthusiastic. Mr. Long gave a Wish List
to the Committee. The Committee felt was that this gave them a good starting point
from which to enlist future members. The next meeting of the Friends Steering
Committee will be Thursday , January 5 from 7 -8 a.m. in the Perrin Room of the
Library . At this meeting the group will do planning for an upcoming Open House to be
held in February as a pre -membership drive .
Brainstorming fcir EPL 2000 was tabled until the January meeting because of the lack
of voting members present. Ms. Dounay has indicated a desire to be on the EPL 2000
planning committee as has Ms. Giffin .
New Business
Chair Brenengen congratulated Board Member Mary Dounay for being appointed to
the 1994 All -Colorado School Board . Those present concurred with Ms . Brenegen.
Cards addressed to the Board were passed around from the staff, thanking the Board
for their party in Nov. as well as a Christmas card to the Board from the staff. Ms.
Brenengen had also received a card at home from a staff member thanking the Board
for a lovely dinner.
Ms. Brenengen commented on the article which has appeared in the Englewood
Companion about the library. Those present were reminded about the upcoming
annual meeting between the Library Board and City Council scheduled for Tues ., Jan .
3rd at 6 p. m. in Conference Room A. Mr. Long handed out a brief summary of the
Library activities for 1994. Included in the report were the ongoing "Save the
Bookmobile","Friends of the Library", and "EPL 2000" projects. Discussion followed
regarding the order of the activities; whether strictly staff/library activities should
precede those activities primarily involving the Board. Mr. Long will change the order
of the activities for a handout for Jan . 3rd's meeting.
In January applications are due to the City Manager's office by the 13th for vacancies
to all Boards and Commissions. Because the Library Board will have 3-4 vacancies
opening up , it is felt that Board Recruitment is very important. This is even more
important at this time as the Board enters the EPL 2000 process . Applications are at
the Circulat ion desk along with the "Welcome to the Library Board" flyer written by
Board Member Leonard and Mr. Long . Ms. Brenengen brought up for discussion the
fact that very few library related questions are asked in the interview process and
would like to see this rectified in some way. She has talked to several City Council
Members who were responsive to help from the Board in the form of questions that
could be asked in the interviews with possible new members . The feeling is that
related questions could help solicit information indicating the strength of commitment
on the part of the applicant as well as hopefully getting informed new members. Ms.
Habenicht addressed the concern of questioning relating to particular Boards and
Commissions from her knowledge of the interview process as a Council
Member/Interviewer . Time is the most critical factor; each candidate has approx. 5 - 8
minutes to be interviewed and the process is for more than one Board at one time, not
necessarily one interview for only one specific Board.
It is important to have more generic questions in the interest of Council's time as well
as the time of the applicant. Discussion followed . No action was taken at this time.
Mr. Long reported on Food For Fines. Food has been taken to lnterFaith twice, though
fines seem to be coming in a little slower this year.
Ms. Clayton reported that Donna Gottberg is doing much better. The staff is planning a
party for he:r in January as well as for Mildred Persons who retired in October after 13
years with the Library.
Ms . Leonard reported that the Bookmobile pins are in and available for a $1 O
donation . She reminded the Board that they had voted to buy and give a pin to retiring
Member Larilyn Ashlock. Ms. Clayton said she would take care of getting the pin to Ms .
Ashlock .
Ms. Habenicht mentioned t hat past Board Member Dorothy T otton had recently lost her
husband and that within 2 weeks time her oldest daughter had also died. The Board
has sent a card to the family . Ms. Habenicht also had an article from the June 9, 1994
Wall Street Journal about Bookmobiles making a comeback. The article will be copied
so all of the Board may see it. Ms . Habenicht has contacted Mr. John Phillips, about
whom the article was written. and he has sent a video which she would like to show at
the January Board meeting . At this time Ms,. Habenicht stated that she shared Ms .
Brenengen's frustration over the lack of Board related questions in the application
process for Board's and Commissions. and ageed the questions need to be more
probing .
Mr. Aigbe ageed that the Englewood Companion article was very good publicity for
the library . He also commended the progamming for 1994 with respect to more multi-
cultural progams and looks forward to more in 1995.
Ms. Giffin plans on bringing teachers from Sheridan Middle School to an informal
Open House, Mon., Jan. 23rd around 3:30 for a tour of the Library. A prposal written by
Ms . Giffin titled ,"Ways to Make Reading Fun" has been chosen to be read at the
upcoming CEMA (Colorado Educational Media Assoc.) meeting .
Ms . Leonard proudly announced that her daughter, Sabrina has been chosen for the
Odyssey of the Mind team from Clayton Elementary.
Mr . Long thanked the Board for all their hard work in 1994 and wished all a good and
safe holiday .
Meeting adjourned at 8 :15 p. m.
