A report will be made next month. The Intellectual Freedom committee has finished its business at this time. Discussion was brought up on the Request for Reconsideration letter initiated by a patron. It should not be made too easy fo r a patron to complain about a book or item in the library, but on the other hand it should be something the patron should give thought to before issuing a complaint. Director Long answered the recent complaint and sent along several policy statements to the patron. After discussion it was the consensus of the group that the letter was good and the procedure should be included, but maybe not all the background items needed to be sent. Mr. Long agreed, and in the future would handle the situation in a different manner. Ms. Ashlock turned the meeting over to Mr. Long for the Director's Report. Mr. Long introduced Mr. Darrell Chayne, Public Services Librarian. He brings with him 19 years of experience and we are glad to have him aboard. Youth member applications were sent to the schools before the holiday break. The closing date for applications is January 17 . At this time no one has applied. Mr. Long plans to install the second computer, funded by grant monies, in the Alternative High School on January 15. Near the end of this month he plans to have a meeting, and decide when the other 7 computers will be installed in area public schools. As of January 13 the Bookmobile is scheduled to go back to the Bluebird Company and have air brakes installed. This will delay the delivery of the vehicle until approximately early April. He was hoping to have our new drivers take their driving tests on the new vehicle , but it looks like they will have to take them on the old vehicle. It was suggested Mr. Long contact the schools to see if we could use one of the school buses for testing. Mr. Long will keep the Board informed as to the progress of the new vehicle as information becomes available. For your information part-time reference librarian Linda Eller resigned and she will be replaced along with a new position for a pa rt -time reference librarian. Two part-time Pages were promoted to Bookmobile/Circulation Library Assistants (Kathleen Cook and Raylene Al-Qatami), so two new part-time Pages should be in place in the near future. Mrs. Koestner is doing quite well, since the loss of her husband in late December. • Colorado and Federal tax forms are out for the public. We have the reproducible forms for Colorado, but the Federal ones have not come at this • time. • • • There was no Chair Report . Members' Choice Jeff Davis requests a comparison of 1991 to 1990 tax summaries from the City. Cinderella City in particular, if possible. Mary Dounay asked if we supported local authors? She passed around a book she had received (to look at) from a Jeffco teacher. Do we highlight local authors? Mr. Long noted that we have local authors in the collection, but we do not highlight. It was suggested it might make a nice display featuring local authors. Rachel Stoddard made note of a news report she heard on January 2. It said that Columbia University, leader in the sc'ience program might close its doors. The University feels librarian positions are getting fewer and fewer due to technology. Mr. Long related he had heard that as economic times get bad libraries have more and more patrons. It is open to all, not just the affluent. Doug Cohn enjoyed reading the transcript from the keynote speaker at the Colorado Library Association conference that was mailed to him. Deryl Gease suggested any Hillerman (mystery writer) book as good reading. There was brief discussion on the Statistical Report for December 1991. Mr. Long will have the graphics ready for the Board at the February meeting . Meeting adjourned at 8:02 p.m. 1-15-92 dg
