The regular meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board was called to order by Chair Larilyn Ashlock at 7 :02 p .m . PRESENT: Larilyn Ashlock , Rachel Stoddard, Sunday Aigbe, Carolin Atkins, Marilyn Brenengen, Mary Dounay, Gloria Ulrich ( arrived at 7:1 o pm), Valerie Williams. Alex Habenicht (arrived at 7 :15 pm), Council Representative to the Board, Jennifer Wolgemuth, Youth Representative REGRETS: Doug Cohn ALSO PRESENT : Hank Long, Library Director, Donna Gottberg, Recording Secretary Roll call was taken and a quorum declared present. There were no scheduled or unscheduled visitors . Two corrections to the August 10, 1993 Minutes. Page 3, 4th paragraph. Ms. Brenengen stated the Longmont Library is beautiful, but it does not appear to be as complete a library as EPL. Page 3, 6th paragraph . Mr . Aigbe said he does not want the Library to spend a lot of money on Cultural Awareness programs they might consider presenting. 93-19 MOTION : That the Minutes from the meeting of August 1 O, 1993 be accepted as amended. Moved by Sunday Aigbe Seconded by Marilyn Brenengen Motion carried. Ms. Dounay gave a brief report from the Nominating Committee. The nomination for Mr. Long as Librarian of the Year to the Colorado Library Association has been prepared and mailed. She has a file copy and passed it around for all members to see. Ms. Ashlock turned the meeting over to Hank Long, Library. Director for • • • the Director·s Report . Mr. Long read . an article on Literacy in America from the Sept . 20 issue of TIME magazine. Mr. Long will be attending the 1994 Budget Retreat, here in the Library Conference Rooms, on Oc:tober 1 and 2. The public is invited to observe . The Open House for Teach ers was held August 29 and the turnout was not as he had desired. He did not feel it was successful. Discussion and suggestions followed for future planning of an Open House . Mr. Long may plan another for 1994. There will be a Public Hearing on the 1994 Budget in the City Hall Council Chambers on Mcinday, September 20 at 7 p .m . City Briefs and the Englewood Citizen were brought forward for discussion on articles regarding the 1994 Budget. Ms. Dounay read from thu August 19th Herald where the Library was being cut 11.2 percent vs. the Recreation cut of 7.9 percent. She feels strongly that the Board must advocate in the Library's behalf. She feels that the Recreation Dept. can raise fees to bring in revenue , whereas the Library does not have that capability. Lengthy discussion followed as to how to present this to Council at the Budget Hearing. It was the decision of those present that Ms. Ashlock, Board Chair, will present the Board's v i ews on the Budget and Ms . Wolgemuth will make a statement for the Youth. Board members plan to attend as a show of support. 93-20 MOTION : That Ms . Ashlock and Ms. Wolgemuth represent the Board's views regarding Budget cuts with positive comments for the future of the Library. and equity of percentages . A · or. notation will be made against the cut of the Bookmobile. Moved by Sunday Aigbe Seconded by Marilyn Brenengen Motion carried unanimously. Director Long gave update? information on the conversion of the City's computer, noting it is now in place and working. The Bookmobile"s Data- Radio system is still having problems and is being worked on. No Chair Report. Members· Choice : Ms. Brenengen gave Mr. Long a name of a gentleman who is disabled and is willing to give an upbeat presentation when needed . No discussion on the Statistical Report for August. Gloria Ulrich and Valerie Williams will be attending the CLA Conference in October. The Board thanked Hank for the refreshments this evening. Meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m . 9/15/93 dg . - • • •
