HomeMy WebLinkAbout2008-09-09 PLB MINUTES• • • Englewood Public Library Board Call To Order/Roll Call 1000 Englewood Parkway, Englewood , CO 80110 303-762-2560 Voice 303-783-6890 FAX Minutes Englewood Public Library Board September 9, 2008 Library Board Chair, Mark Adams at 7:00 p.m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to order . PRESENT : Mark Adams, Trish Elley , Julie Grazulis (arrived late), Tom Kruk , lain Lumsden , Megan Nordlander, Karen Pilgrim, Yvonne Russell , School Board Member, Shelley Thompson , Youth member Nathaniel Barragan, and Council Member, Randy Penn . ABSENT: Margaret Freeman (excused). Also Present: Hank Long , Library Director and Joan Clayton , Recording Secretary. 08 -12 Motion: That the minutes of the meeting of July 8, 2008 be approved as written. Moved by: Yvonne Russell Seconded by : Megan Nordlander The Motion passed . Mr. Long reported that the next meeting of the Friends of the Library will be on Wednesday, September 17 after the Book Sale on Friday, September 12 & Saturday, September 13, both days from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. The next travel program sponsored by the Friends will be on Wednesday, October 15 at 7 p.m. with past Board Member and Denver Poet Laureate , Chris Ransick and his wife Shannon Skaife. This will be a travel program called, "Cliffs , Riffs & Quaffs: a Month on the Emerald Isle". Pictures that Chris and Shannon took on their trip are on display on the shelves above the CD's in the Library. In looking at the monthly statistics it was noted that Internet uses continue to rise . In the packet for this evening's meeting there was a chart comparing Englewood Library with other libraries of comparable size. Aga in it was noted how Internet use at Englewood was high over the year. Mr. Long thanked those Board Members who had attended the Board and Commission Appreciation Night at Pirate's Cove last month . Mr. Penn said that Council continues to look at ways to improve events allowing for more time to interact with Board and Commission Members in order to thank them for their time and commitment. There were many good comments about the Children 's Summer Reading Program , "Read Green ". The numbers of children signing up and finishing increased this year . The Young Adult program, also called "Read Green", had an increase in numbers, Mr. Long reported on the proposed 2009 Budget. Most of the basics have remained w ith a revision to a 4 .81 % level which . translates to a change of approximately $1500. The City is currently looking at a 5% increase above last year . The Budget is relatively flat with no positives or negatives. City Council will meet with Department Heads on Saturday, September 20 to d iscuss the 2009 Budget. There are currently more -1 - Capital requests than funds available, 8 million dollars of requests with 2 million dol lars available for MYCP funds . The Library requests for these funds did not make the cut for 2009. Mr. Adams said he • appreciated the fact that Mr . Long had noted that the Library requests had been linked to the 5-Year Plan for the Library. Mr. Long said that there have been some recent staff changes beginning with the new Computer Specialist , Sean Crow who has hit the ground running. Mr. Crow is busy every day maintaining the computer issues for the Library. He works in conjunction with the City's IT department but with Library specific issues . Mackie Fritzmeier who had been the Young Adult specialist has taken a position with the Denver Public Schools as librarian in one of DP S's elementary schools. Krista Hutley has recently taken the job of Young Adult specialist. Karin Martin one of the Children's librarians will be out for 6 weeks medical leave beginning September 12. As Ms. Martin does the Wednesday and Friday story times the statistics will reflect her absence. Mr. Long said that the American Library Association Midwinter conference will be held in Denver next year. The mid -winter conference is more of a working event with many good exhibits . Mr. Long is trying to get tickets for staff and those Board members who might be interested in attending. A question was raised asking if EPL had considered self-checkout. Mr. Long said that he had considered this but that due to the rise in costs he felt it in the best interests of the Library to not proceed with implementing self -checkout. One Board member said that they personally liked having their books checked out by the "ladies as they are so entertaining"! Members Choice Mr. Adams talked about how things change over time . For instance the use of Wikipedia; when the 5 Year • planning group first met 2 years ago Pat Wagner, a consultant talked about trends in the Library and how Wikipedia at that time was just entering the realm of validity. Because it updates so quickly many people are now using it as a source for current information. He noted how quickly this source has evolved in 2 years time. Ms. Elley said she has finals this week. She mentioned that she loved the "Fiddler on the Roof' production that Mr. Kruk was in. Ms. Pilgrim said she had also enjoyed Mr. Kruk's performance in "Fiddler on the Roof'. She said her job was not as busy now that summer is over and the children are back in school. Her book club is now reading "The Sound and The Fury". She said that she had checked out the Cliff Notes to help her with the book which had been a struggle to read! Mr. Lumsden said that he and his wife are going on a Western Caribbean cruise next week. All present wished them well, noting the hurricanes down south. Mr. Kruk said he had a lot of fun with the production this summer. Just a wonderful time and experience! Mr. Penn said he is loving retirement! Ms . Grazulis said she is unemployed due to an economy move by the company so she is looking for work. She brought up for discussion the report of a problem patron and how to protect staff and patrons from these kinds of incidents. It was noted that Library procedures were in place and followed. The presence of the Security guard in the evenings has helped. Ms. Russell said she is retired! She has been fishing, travelling to France, camping, and auditing an art history course at the University of Denver. Life is good . -2 - • • • Mr. Barragan said that his English class is reading "The Chosen" which he finds very interest ing. He has a new baby brother as of the end of July so that has kept him busy. Ms . Nordlander said her son started kindergarten this fall. She said she and her family will miss sto ry times while Ms. Martin is out on medical leave. She and her family will be biking in Glenwood Springs at the end of the month. Mr. Long said he is not retired . Ms . Clayton said that authors are calling about the Author Open House in April , se veral have already signed on . There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 7 :55 p.m . - 3 -
