Englewood Public Library Board
October 14, 2008
Library Board Chair , Mark Adams at 7:00 p.m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board
to order.
PRESENT: Mark Adams , Julie Grazulis (arrived late), Megan Nordlander, Karen Pilgrim, Yvonne Russell,
Youth member Nathaniel Barragan, and Council Member, Randy Penn .
ABSENT: Trish Elley (e x cused), Margaret Freeman (excused) Tom Kruk (excused), lain Lumsden
(excused) and School Board Member, Shelley Thompson (excused).
Also Present: Children's Librarian, Hillary Cole Davis, Nathaniel Barragan's baby brother, lsai , Hank Long,
Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary.
Children's Librarian, Hillary Davis presented the Englewood Reads program that takes place during the
month of November. This program consists of 77 classroom visits made by Ms . Davis and her co-worker,
Karin Martin to all the elementary classrooms in the Englewood Public Schools and the 2 private schools,
All Souls School and St. Louis School in the first 2 weeks in November before Thanksgiving week . Each
visit consists of read aloud stories, talks about books and information about the library. Each classroom is
given a book appropriate to their grade level as a gift from the library. These books have been purchased
with money generously given by the Library Board and the Friends of the Library . Ms . Davis passed
around the books chosen for this year's classroom visits for each of the 3 levels : "I Will Make Miracles" by
Susie Morgenstern for Kindergarten & 151 grade; "Front Porch Tales and North Countr~ Whop~ers" by
Tamie DePaola for 2nd & 3rd grades; and "One Voice Please" by Sam McBratney for 4 and 51 grades .
This will be the third year that Ms . Davis and Ms. Martin have taken books as a gift to each classroom. Ms.
Davis said that she and Ms. Martin spend a lot of time reading children's books and deciding which books
to take to the classrooms. Ms. Davis said that when she & Ms. Martin return to the classrooms in May for
Children's Book Week and to talk about the Summer Reading Program the classes are anxious to share
how much they enjoyed the books given out in November.
Mr. Long said that he is always very impressed with the appropriateness of the book choices for the age
and grade levels. This was echoed by all present.
Mr. Adams thanked Ms. Davis for attending the Board Meeting and bringing the books for their preview.
After Ms. Davis left the meeting the following Motion was made.
08 -13 Motion: That $500 from the Library Board Budget be designated for purchase of books to be
given to the classrooms during the November, "Englewood Reads" program.

The Motion passed unanimously.
08 -14 Moti o n: That the minutes of the meeting of September 9, 2008 be approved as written .

Mr. Long reported that the next meet ing of the Friends of the Library will be in April before the ne xt Book
Sale . The Fall Book Sale raised $1330 during the 2 days the sale was held in September. All of the
leftover juvenile books were boxed up and sent to the Rosebud Reservat ion as had been done previously.
Some books will be given to a group of art teachers for an art I book project and the remaining books will
be sent to be shredded and recycled .
The Friends will sponsor a travel program about Ireland tomorrow evening with past Board member, Chris
Ransick and his wife, Shannon Skaife . On November 20 past Board member, Marilyn Binkley and her
husband, Dave will present a program about their trip to the Beijing Olympics, China and Tibet.
Mr. Adams thanked everyone for taking the time and being here this evening . He said he felt it was
especially important in view of Ms. Davis' presentation and the great outreach effort to the schools.
Mr. Long reminded everyone that due to the Veteran's Day holiday on Tuesday, November 11 the Board
meeting will be held on the 3rd Tuesday of November, wh ich will be the 181
h of November.
Mr. Long asked for a show of hands of those who would like tickets to exhibits at the ALA Mid-Winter
conference on January 23 -26. Everyone present indicated interest. Mr. Long will send names in to ALA
and have tickets for all the Library Board members .
The 2009 Budget has yet to be formally adopted : the process is an ongo ing one. City Council has had to
make some hard decisions after having seen all the requests . The Library budget , ex cept for 3 Cap ita l
Requests is status quo for 2009 .
Changes were recently made so that wi -fi users can print; either in color or black and white.
Winter Food for Fines is scheduled for December 1 -14. There was a short discussion about fines and
how the popularity of the Food for Fines program offsets any loss of fines during the 2 week periods twice
a year .
Members Choice
Ms. Russell said she is having fun being retired. She will be travelling to Chicago with her husband next
week.
Ms . Pilgrim said she has enjoyed talking politics with her neighbors and friends. She said that she has
started the paperwork to re -up on the Library Board for another 4 years . Her son has a puppy, so Ms .
Pilgrim said she has a Grand pup who is in the chewing stage . She is enjoying her grown up children . Her
Junior Great Books group has been reading "Huckleberry Finn". She said her book club is reading,
"Empire Falls" which she is enjoying a lot.
Ms . Nordlander said everything is going well.
Ms : Grazulis said she is looking for a job. A short discussion about interviews and unemployment issues
followed . Ms. Grazulis said she had visited some different libraries; and had seen plans for 3 new libraries .
Mr. Penn said that he and his wife are having a good time . He recently finished making an outdoor pond,
which measures 12 feet x 12 ft. by 3 ft. deep.
Mr. Barragan said that school and lots more school takes up most of his time. Tomorrow he will be taking
PSAT tests. He said his little brother is a handful.

Ms. Clayton said that she has 30 authors signed up for the Open House in April. One author has even
signed up for the 1020 event!
Mr. Long mentioned that one of the authors, Jeff Evans who is coming in April to the Open House was a
guest speaker at the Englewood Leadership Institute luncheon . Jeff was the guide for Eric Weihenmayer ,
a blind mountain climber on his climb to the top of Mt. Everest. Jeff is a very inspirational and dynamic
speaker .
Mr. Adams said that he and several biking buddies had been in Golden after a bike ride and were feeling
very full of themsel ves when in to the room came, Eric Weihenmayer . 'Talk about not being the best
athlete in the room"!
There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 7:45 p.m .
