HomeMy WebLinkAbout2009-01-13 PLB MINUTES• • Call To Order/Roll Call 1000 Englewood Parkway, Englewood, CO 80110 303-762-2560 Voice 303-783-6890 FAX Minutes Englewood Public Library Board January 13, 2009 Library Board Chair, Mark Adams at 7:00 p.m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to order. PRESENT: Mark Adams, Trish Elley, Margaret Freeman, Tom Kruk, Megan Nordlander, Karen Pilgrim, Yvonne Russell , Youth Member Nathaniel Barragan, and Council Member, Randy Penn . ABSENT : Julie Grazulis , lain Lumsden (excused), and School Board Member , Shelley Thompson Also Present: Hank Long, Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary. 09 -01: That the minutes of the meeting of December 9, 2008 be approved as written . Moved by: Tom Kruk Seconded by: Margaret Freeman The Motion passed . The Friends of the Library will be sponsoring two travel programs; January 29 will be "My African Journey", a photo safari with Carolyn Derrington Tate and on February 25, "The Old Man and The Harley'' with John J. Newkirk , a program based on the book of the same name. Th e next meeting of the friends will be April 1st . When looking at the monthly statistical report it was noted that this is a year -end report. The line for special databases will be added later as it becomes available. Internet usage continues to increase . Mr. Adams said he would be interested in the coming months to see if the Job Kiosk usage increases due to the economy. Mr. Adams welcomed everyone to 2009! There was a brief discussion about election of Board Chair and Vice -Chair for the year 2009. Mr. Adams said he would be willing to continue as Board Chair for another year as did Mr. Kruk say he would continue as the Vice -Chair person . 09 -02 Motion: That Mark Adams be nominated and accepted as the Board Chair person for 2009. Moved by: Karen Pilgrim Seconded by: Tom Kruk The Motion passed unanimously 09 -03 Motion: That Tom Kruk be nominated and accepted as Vice Chair person for 2009. Moved by: Yvonne Russell Seconded by: Karen Pilgrim The Motion passed unanimously. • Mr. Adams thanked those present for their confidence in his ability. -1 - Mr. Long mentioned that the Winter Food for Fines Program numbers were slightly higher than the Summer program, yet a little lower than the numbers from 2006. Since the inception of the program in 1997 approximately $37,000 in non perishab le food items has been donated to lnter Faith Community Services food bank . Flyers for the Adult Winter Reading Program were passed out. This is a program unde r the direction of Reference Librarian, Debra Taylor who has the responsibility of ordering the fiction materials for the Library . Everyone was encouraged to sign up for the reading program. The next item for discussion was a review of a new Library Blog Policy. Mr . Long asked everyone to take a few moments and look over the policy. It has been reviewed by the City Attorney and by the City's IT department. Krista Hutley , the Young Adult Librarian would be responsible for reviewing all blog postings. This is an area that Ms . Hutley has had experience with in her previous job. The blog s ite is seen as a way to reach the teens in the community. Further discussion followed . It was noted that the Library would be the first department in the City to ha ve a blog, others might follow su it after watching the Library's blog . The goal of the blog is to acquaint a certain age group, teens with the library and what is available . Mr . Adams said he was appreciative of the time and foresight that had been put in to the policy . 09-04 Motion: That the Library Blog Policy be accepted as presented . Moved by: Margaret Freeman Seconded by: Megan Nordlander The Motion passed unanimously. Updated posters advertising TutorVista will be sent out to all the schoo ls w ith bookmarks to rem ind students of the service at the library. Raylene Al Qatami who works at the Circulation desk will be retiring at the end of January after 19 years at EPL. Lelle Holmes a retired employee recently passed away. Her daughter, Jane Bigelow is on the Reference Staff. Members Choice Ms . Pilgrim said she is in charge of the library at her church . She has enjoyed the many donations , two of which were copies of "Roberts' Rule of Order''. She passed along a suggestion for snow removal from the gutters for Mr. Penn to take to City Council. She said that she had just read "Frankenstein" for the first time and enjoyed it. Her family's new puppy recently had several surgeries and is very hyper at this point! Ms . Russell said that had signed up for "Brain Exercises", a class at the School of Life -Long Learning . She will let the Board know how it goes . Ms. Freeman said she is waiting for warm weather and to get back to yoga class. Mr. Penn said that some bad news is that the Art Center planned for the corner of Broadway and Floyd will not be proceeding . The Interviews for Boards and Commissions had gone very well. The Chamber of Commerce has a new website that is to go live January 14; "My Englewood Chamber .com". Though the Budget is not final, the City has a 2.9 % surplus for the end of the year. Mr. Penn said he had recently toured the new senior housing , Terraces on Penn. They are very nice . He is planning to apply for a trip to Washington, D.C. offered by City Council. He is very excited about an environmental class at the High School. There are plans to apply for grant money to build a greenhouse or planters for the courtyard at the school. The students are also planning a study of ways to be "greener" throughout the school building. Mr . Kruk said he had been sledding with his children prior to the meeting and it was a ball. Mr. Adams said again thanks for the opportunity to lead the Board for another year . He said he hoped all Board members would take the opportunity to attend the ALA conference exhibits over the weekend of January 23. He said it was nice to be at a light-hearted meeting . He was recently at a Ski patrol meeting in Boulder where members were talking about the fires in and around their homes as well as the recent murder at the Eldora Ski area. The year 2009 holds many exciting events for Mr. Adams , stay tuned! There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 7:55 p.m . -3 -
