HomeMy WebLinkAbout2009-04-14 PLB MINUTES• Call To Order/Roll Call l 000 Englewood Parkway, Englewood, CO 801l0 303 -762-2560 Voice 303-783-6890 FAX Minutes Englewood Public Library Board April 14, 2009 Library Board Chair, Mark Adams at 7:00 p.m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to order . PRESENT: Mark Adams, Trish Elley , Margaret Freeman, Julie Grazulis , Tom Kruk , Karen Pilgrim, Yvonne Russell , Youth Member Nathaniel Barragan , and Council Member, Randy Penn . ABSENT : lain Lumsden and Megan Nordlander (excused). Also Present: Deb Parker, new Executive Assistant for the Library and new Library Board Recording Secretary, Hank Long, Library Director and Joan Clayton , Recording Secretary. Ms . Deb Parker was introduced to the Library Board as the new Recording Secretary for the Library Board and Executive assistant for the Library . Ms . Parker will be replacing Ms . Joan Clayton when she retires as Executive Assistant on May 15 . All present gave her a hearty welcome. • 09 -07: That the minutes of the meeting of March10, 2009 be approved as written. Moved by: Margaret Freeman Seconded by : Julie Grazulis The Motion passed . Mr. Long reported that the recent Friends' Book Sale had realized a profit of $1950 . Thanks to all who contributed to the Sale either helping, donating or purchasing! A large portion of the fiction books that were left and textbooks are being sent to Africa through the Books for Africa program . It was again noted that the statistics for the Job Kiosk have almost doubled over last year . Also it was pointed out that the number of patrons coming into the Library is up and as usual the Internet statistics keep increasing. Mr. Long noted that the self reservation system has made a difference in staff interventions with the public and the public's time limited use of the Internet. There have been far fewer arguments over time limits than previously. Mr . Barragan pointed out the large difference between the number of Children's programs and Young Adult programs. He said he is looking forward to Ms . Hutley making a difference in the number of teen programs. Mr. Adams said he knows that every month he thanks everyone present for their time and commitment but he feels that is very important to thank people when they give of their time. Thanks everyone! Mr. Long said that on March 17 the Children's librarians had a very successful program for the 4th and 51h grade students in the Englewood Schools and the 2 private schools with local children's author, Avi. The teen Guitar Hero program on March 14 also went well. He reminded everyone about the Colorado Author Open House coming up on Sunday, April 19 . Mr. Adams noted that on the back of tonight's agenda there is a list of upcoming events for the next few months . • Ms. Pilgrim asked if it would be possible to have a longer checkout for DVD's that have multiple discs . Mr. - 1 - • • • Kruk said he has checked out multiple disc sets from Denver Public Library and in some cases the sets are broken up into separate check outs. A brief discussion followed . It was noted that a patron can renew after the 1 week checkout is up . Mr. Adams welcomed Ms . Parker to the Board as the new Recording Secretary. He briefly went over the fact that the Board meetings are informal in nature, though when needed the meeting can become much more structured . Minutes are NOT verbatim minutes, unless requested to be so . Aga in he wished Ms . Parker much welcome. Mr. Adams asked that during Members Choice everyone give a brief introduction of themselves for Ms . Parker's benefit Members Choice Mr. Adams said he has enjoyed his time on the Board and being Board Chair for the past 2 years . He has 3 boys , a nice wife and he just turned 40 last week . He has lived in Englewood for about 7 years . Ms . Pilgrim said she has lived in Englewood since 1974. She has a son 24 and a daughter 21 . She also has enjoyed her 3 terms on the Board . Ms . Russell said she came on the Board at the same time as Ms . Pilgrim . She is recently retired from Denver Public Schools . Ms . Elley said she has lived in Englewood for 4 years and been on the Board for a year . She has a wonderful husband. Ms. Freeman said she has been on the Board for 3 years. She is retired . Mr. Penn welcomed Ms . Parker. He is the City Council liaison to the Library Board . He recently retired from the Englewood Schools after 37 years teaching PE and coaching the Englewood High School football team . He is also very involved in working with the Chamber of Commerce to revitalize it as a community organization . He had a great time in Mexico! Ms . Grazulis thanked Ms . Clayton for her work at the Library and with the Library Board. Ms . Grazulis has lived in Englewood for 30 years . She has 3 daughters and 3 grandchildren . Mr. Barragan said he has lived in Englewood for 6 years . He said the trip to Washington , D.C. was just awesome! He will be giving presentations on Wed . April 22 for the Rotary Club and Wed ., April 29 for the Lions Club. He has an 8 month old little brother who is a lot of fun . Mr. Kruk said he has lived in Englewood for 11 years and has been on the Board for 3 years . He and his wife have 4 daughters; 16, 11, 6 & 4 . He said he would miss Ms . Clayton . Ms . Parker said she has a wonderful husband and 16 year old step daughter. Ms . Clayton talked briefly about the plan for the Author Open House on Sunday, April 19. 60 authors will be present with their books . Mr. Kruk said he would be at the Author Reception to represent the Board and welcome the authors. She said that she would miss working with the Board members as well as the Library staff. The transition to retirement is being made very easy with Ms. Parker's appointment to fill the position of Executive Assistant. Ms . Clayton said she is sure that both the Board and Library staff will be in very capable hands when she leaves . Mr. Long said that he will miss Ms. Clayton very much from both a working and personal relationship. He said that he is thrilled to have Ms . Parker in the position . There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 7:45 p.m . -2 -
