Englewood Public Library Board
June 9, 2009
Library Board Chair, Mark Adams at 7:04 p .m , called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to order .
PRESENT : Mark Adams, Trish Elley, Margaret Freeman , Tom Kruk, Karen Pilgrim, Yvonne Russell , Council
Member, Randy Penn .
ABSENT : Julie Grazulis (absent) and lain Lumsden , (excused), Megan Nordlander (excused), Youth Member
Nathaniel Barragan (absent).
Also Present: Hank Long , Library Director and Deb Parker , Recording Secretary.
09 -10: That the minutes of the meeting of May 12, 2009 be approved as written .

• Mr. Long reported that there was no news for the Friends of the Library .
Mr . Adams mentioned report on City website usage run quarterly. Allowed for members to take a moment and
view the reports . It was noted that volunteer hours were down. Mr . Long figures that this due to our Retiree
Volunteers recent travels . Many of the numbers are up , including the Patron numbers , which should drop after
Weeding Week due to the purging of in-active patrons .
Mr . Long explained the budget memo sent to staff. Council is in agreement with Directors offers at this time. The
Library will cut $20 ,000 from materials for the remainder of 2009 and 2010. Mr. Long explained that materials can
again be built up in better economic times. Mr. Long explained that most of the Library staff is Part -Ti me and
cannot afford to lose hours without losing benefit coverage . Mr . Adams asked for clarification on "m aterials ", and
Mr. Long explained that it is the collection . All 8 Collection Development Librarians w ill cut back on their
collections.
Mr. Long explained the process of Weeding Week which allows for new material. Out of date , damaged, rarely
checked out , etc . will be purged . Leasing books is one way to allow for fluctuation in the collection and allow for
cost savings . Weeding Week also allows for training and building maintenance work.
Mr. Long shared the recent discussions about AV purchasing . He reminded the board of the 5-year plan, and the
difficulty of being able to foresee the future of technology. Netflix , McDonald's and Blockbuster are in the business
of movies and Mr . Long feels that there is no need to compete with these businesses . Mr. Adams agreed that we
cannot keep up with this technology, and thanked Mr . Long for his diligence in keeping up on services for the
community where useful.
Mr . Adams asked that all members of the Board take the time to read the information that Mr . Long prov ides . By
reading ahead of time, th is will allow for digestion of information and promote more discussion as needed . Mr .

Long shared that not all the in formation may be of value to each member, but that the information is there for the
reading .

Mr . Long shared that the 2008 State Library stats show comparable libraries . He encouraged Board to draw own
conclusions. Please give him thoughts and opinions .
Mr . Long shared that the online catalog is now available in Spanish .
Council agendas and minutes are now available on-line on the City's website . Mr. Long asked if the Board still
wishes to receive a hard copy in light of this information . Mr. Long asked the Board to consider if they would
prefer to read this information online vs. printed copies? The option is on the table and those who want hard
copies would be welcome to them remain receiving a mailed packet. Each member will bring their thoughts to the
next meeting .
TutorVista has been cancelled for 2010 and the remainder of 2009 . Mr. Long is awaiting notice of the refund
amount.
Ms . Pilgrim asked if the Board may provide lunch on Monday of weeding week to honor the staff and show
support.

Member's Choice
Ms . Russell shared that she has been listening to Dreams of My Father, read by Obama on her i-Pod .
Ms . Freeman said she returned from Chicago where she went to see her grand-daughter graduate high school.
Ms. Elley shared that she is working on finals for school and completing a project for school also .
Mr. Penn shared that Ms. Russell was by his Iris garden and thanked her for visiting. He also announced the fact
that the new Youth Member to the board will be, Brianna Carey for the next year . There has been plann in g to
create a Youth General Board allow each member to share and be a part of their own group . Budget process has
been tough , but maintaining services are important.
Mr . Kruk said his garden is growing . His dog drank plant enhancer and they are not sure what may or may not
happen to the dog . Mr . Kruk is planning on joining classes . He is working part-time with ADT dealer, and has
sold three systems . He is still looking for a long term situation . His girls are doing great.
Ms. Pilgrim said she is busy at work, and she got a raise. She is working with eight different children now .
Mr . Long had nothing this time .
We had two guests arrive, unexpectedly. Mr. Bob Mccaslin , Council Member and Gary Furman , member of KEB ,
stopped by to say hello and thank the Board for all their efforts . Mr . Mccaslin thanked the library for maintaining
hours of operation .
Mr. Adams said the family is back from vacation . While the family was in Denny's they met a pilot of a
Thunderbird 3 and they had photos taken with him. He also thanked Council for all their work on the budget.
There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 7 :55 p .m .
