Englewood Public Library Board
August 11, 2009
Library Board Vice-Chair, Tom Kruk at 7:06 p .m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to
order.
PRESENT: Trish Elley, Margaret Freeman , Julie Grazulis, Tom Kruk, Karen Pilgrim, Council Member, Randy
Penn, and Youth Member, Brianna Carey.
ABSENT: Mark Adams (excused), lain Lumsden (excused), and Yvonne Russell (excused).
Also Present: Hank Long, Library Director and Deb Parker, Recording Secretary.
09 -12: That the minutes of the meeting of July 14, 2009 be approved as written.

The Motion passed .
Mr. Long reported that the Friends of the Library will be holding their Fall Book Sale on Thursday, September 1 oth,
Friday, September 11th, and Saturday, September 12 .
Mr. Long also reported that Weeding week was a great success. Fewer items were weeded out, due to the
budget concerns. He thanked the Board for providing pizza for Monday and shared that the staff enjoyed visiting
with Ms. Pilgrim during the lunch.
Mr. Long shared the upcoming Travel Talk Programs
-September 30th in Hampden Hall at 7:00 pm , Walking the Scenic Byways with author, Susan Tweit and
Photographer, Jim Steinberg.
-October 15th in the Community Room at 7:00 pm, Truckin' South America with Bill Clayton.
Monthly reports were discussed. Ms . Elley noted that Internet use is up, and YA attendance is down. Mr. Long
explained that we have a new Youth Librarian, and she is working on building the relationships while creating
programs.
Also noted were the increased numbers in Jobs kiosk and Wi-Fi usage.
Mr . Penn asked about Children's computer usage. Mr. Long explained that the computers are used for early
learning programs/games and interactive activities.
Mr . Kruk asked how the patron contact tracking is measured. Mr. Long explained that contact is through phone
and direct contacts both. Face to face is the largest portion. The numbers were down for July as Ms . Parker was
out for two weeks and she handles quite a few contacts over the phone .
Mr. Long explained that the Library in keeping with the City as a whole, will be trying to go green and use less
paper. Mr. Long asked that the Board consider going paperless for all documents other than stats, reports,

agendas and meeting minutes. Th is would allow for smaller packets to be sent out and Board members could
read emailed articles at their leisure as they receive them throughout the month. Ms . Grazulis still needs
everything sent to her , as her computer is still down. Mr. Kruk , Ms . Elley, Ms. Freeman , Ms . Pilgrim, Mr. Penn and
Ms . Carey all agreed to receive limited items in hard copy. Those members absent will be contacted by Mr. Long
fo r the ir determinations on the matter.
The discussion of additional electrical outlets for personal computers in the library was raised by Mr. Kruk , and he
suggested that we put the matter aside for the t ime being and readdress when the budget allows.
Mr. Kruk shared that the password article sent by Mr. Long was very informative and helpful. Discussion ensued .
Mr. Long reported that next month 's meeting (September 8t h) will be held in the Children 's Story-time room .
Mr. Long explained that budget meetings are happening frequently and will be continuing . Directors will be
meeting with Council the end of September to set the budget for 2010 . Mr . Penn added that the City is trying to
maintain services and positions .
Ms. Pilgrim asked Mr. Long to share about the items found during Weed ing week . Mr. Long mentioned that two
whiskey bottles were found in the shelves , as well as a book that had been vomited in and replaced . Mr. Long
stated that the week on a whole was uneventful and successful.
Ms. Parker shared that she will be working on creating a Mother/Daughter Book Club to start with the New Year.
Mr. Long reported that our "One Soldier's Story" with IT's Russ Vaughn was a small group, but a great
presentation and shared with Mr. Penn that Mr. Vaughn 's presentation may be of interest to his Chamber of
Commerce group.
Ms . Pilgrim stated her excitement for the Dick Kreck and Gene Smaldone presentation set for November 1ih .
Member's Choice
Ms . Freeman said she recommends Pirate 's Cove and the Lazy River. She enjoyed the Ice Cream Social event
for the Boards and Commiss ions .
Ms . Elley shared that she is working on cleaning her house for her mother's visit. She also had some electrical
work completed .
Mr. Penn provided coupons for the Farmer's Market. He reported that the market is picking up. Mr. Penn
encouraged everyone to take part in the Taste of Englewood and Englewood Days on August 281h from 8:00 am -
5:00 pm . He shared that coaching is going well with the D'Evelyn football team and he is anticipating their game
against EHS with mixed emotions .
Ms. Grazulis shared that the Southglenn Library is open , but she has yet to make it in check out the place . Last
week she attended an autho r event, and will get the business card to Ms . Parker for the Author Open House next
April. Kendra had her baby three weeks early and they are both healthy. She named him James . Ms. Grazul is '
mother sold her house in Parker. Ms. Grazulis shared that she considered running for Council, but changed her
mind.
Ms. Carey shared that she and her boyfriend, along with his family attended Heaven Fest. She has been busy
with cheerleading and getting ready for classes to beg in.
Ms . Pilgrim shared that life is slowing down . Her son 's dog had been visiting and wounded her with his claw , but
she is healing and it was a fun visit. She is enjoying the quiet now.
• Ms . Parker thanked the Board for the ca rd after the pass ing of her father. Life is settling down and everything is

getting closer to normal again .
Mr. Kruk is enjoying his summer. He is taking advantage of extra "Daddy time" with the girls before they go back
to school. He is still looking for work , but has a prospect that he is working towards .
Mr. Long had nothing this time.
There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 8 :54 p.m .
