HomeMy WebLinkAbout2009-11-10 PLB MINUTES• • 1000 Englewood Parkway, Englewood, CO 80110 303-762-2572 303-783-6890 FAX www .englewoodgov.org Call To Order/Roll Call MINUTES Englewood Public Library Board November 10, 2009 Library Board Chair, Mark Adams called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to order at 7:03 p.m. PRESENT: Mark Adams, Tom Kruk, Julie Grazulis, Karen Pilgrim, Yvonne Russell, Council Member, Randy Penn, and Youth Member, Brianna Carey. ABSENT: Trish Elley (excused), lain Lumsden (excused), and Margaret Freeman (excused) Also Present: Hank Long, Library Director and Deb Parker, Recording Secretary. 09 -15: That the minutes of the meeting of October 13 , 2009 be approved as written. Ms. Pilgrim stated that her name was missing from the minutes . She was excused from the meeting . With this correction being made to the minutes, a motion to approve the corrected minutes as follows : Moved by: Tom Kruk Seconded by: Karen Pilgrim The Motion passed unanimously. Friends of the Library Mr. Long mentioned that the back of the Agenda now serves as an ongoing list for upcoming Friends programs as well as other Library displays , programs and activities . He stated that he will share more information on the Friends at future Board meetings as appropriate. Monthly Statistical and Financial Reports Mr. Penn asked if our purging this year was less due to the budget. Mr. Long confirmed that we did not purge nearly as many items in the 2009 weeding. Ms. Russell asked if the staff pulls items from the donated items . Mr . Long responded that, depending on the quality of items donated, we generally utilize between one-fourth to one- third of donations in the collection, while the remaining items are either sold in our various sales programs , given away to other non-profits or recycled . After the first of the year we will begin sorting in preparation of 2009 sales. Other Old Business Mr. Adams reminder the Board that hard copies of Board materials will remain limited since most of these are now sent via email. Mr. Long asked how this is working for everyone. Mr. Adams shared that this keeps things much more current and more efficient. He appreciates the ability to respond to the emails that Mr . Long sends out and allows for constructive and positive communication. Mr. Penn shared that he has liked being able to forward information . Ms. Russell also likes the information . Mr. Adams feels that in the information society, it helps to share information with others. Mr. Long thanked the Board for making this transition smooth . New Business -1 - • • • Library Board Chair's Report Mr. Adams enjoyed seeing the 81h Air Force display. He enjoyed the pilot's journal, and the fact that it is still legible and very interesting to read. He found a personal connection to some of the information . Mr. Long mentioned that the display showing Mr. Sears ' father was a moving display also. He said that City Manager, Gary Sears was excited to share this information with the commun ity. Library Director's Report Mr. Long reviewed the upcoming events , including: Ms . Parker's Writer's Series begins on December 5th and her Multi-Generational Book Club will begin in January. Dick Kreck and Gene Smaldone will be here on November 1 ih to share the book that they collaborated on to share the story of the Smaldone family . Mr. Long will have the update for the 5-year plan at the December meeting . Other New Business Ms. Pilgrim asked if we would be having the Board meeting in December. Mr. Adams stated that he plans on having the meeting since we already had one cancelled due to lack of a quorum. If you will not be able to attend , please let Ms . Parker know early. Mr. Adams asked members about the use of remaining Board budget monies that have historically been given to the Library at the end of each year. Ms . Russell stated that she is in favor of continuing to provide that money to the Library. Mr. Adams would like to know what the Board would like to do . Ms . Pilgrim shared that the Board has been frugal this year. Mr. Kruk asked if there was something different to do with the money than just purchase books as we have done in the past. He suggested that we consider using the money for programs . Mr. Long suggested that the money could used to purchase a projector for programs . Ms. Russell suggested that we start working earlier on the spending next year . Discussion ensued . The Motion was made to forward remainder of the funds to go towards the purchase of a new projector, cart , and adapters . Moved by: Tom Kruk Seconded by: Karen Pilgrim The Motion passed unan imously. Members' Choice Yvonne Russell -She shared that she loves getting the emails from Hank. She has been volunteering for the Library and enjoys it. Tom Kruk -He is progressing w ith tra ining with his new j ob and enjoy ing it. He 's also been playing racquetball and spending time with his girls. Randy Penn -The elections have ended and Boards &Commission appointments will be set shortly . He stated that he will request to stay on with t he Library Board . The Education Foundation 's "Fall Fling" was held the previous Saturday night and it was successful. Money was made and the food was great. State playoffs begin this Friday. His Christmas displays have begun , but it will take him some time to complete them all. The Chamber Holiday Party is the 81h of December at the Riverton on the Platte apartments at 5:00 pm . Emails will be sent as an invitation. The Chamber would love to have the Board attend. Julie Grazulis -Her newest grandson is 3 months old and adorable . Kendra is giving flu shots . Kirsten is now showing dogs in Utah . Her brother Kyle has been diagnosed with leukemia , and she is asking for your prayers . She or her other brother w ill be available for marrow transplant if necessary. She asked if the Board should consider new photos for the displa¥ board? She also wants to thank Yvonne Russell for getting her back on the road with a new computer. Her 40 h High School reun ion just happened . -2 - • • • Brianna Carey-She is busy with swimming and cheering . Cheer competition is this Saturday. She has Applied to Colorado School of Mines , as well as CU . Karen Pilgrim -She just returned form vacation before the last meeting . She was in North Carol ina and saw lots of lighthouses , the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the Appalachian Trail. It has been crazy since their return . They bought a used car , so it is a treat to not plan schedules and share the car . She read the Smaldone book and is very excited for Thursday night's program. They brought back books from NC to read over the cold winter. Deb Parker -Had nothing at this t ime. Hank Long -Had nothing at this time . Mark Adams -He is now playing on two soccer teams. He shared that the Appalachian Trail is known as the "AT" for those in the area. Life is going good . Snow Patrol is great. Work is still going . All in all he has a great deal to feel thankful for . Library Board Chair, Mark Adams adjourned the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board at 7:51 p.m . -3 -
